  • Make education accessible. Become a Hindi translator!

If you’re fluent in spoken and written Hindi and passionate about eradicating education inequality, keep reading! Oppia is looking for a translator to assist our team with translating our online story-based lessons from English to Hindi . To get started, please fill in this form: https://forms.gle/HTCWBRixXo9gJj2o7 Who We Are The Oppia Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with the mission to provide high quality education to all. We do this through the creation and maintenance of our free-to-use platform, Oppia (https://www.oppia.org), the coordination of our passionate contributors, and the development of critical partnerships with NGOs in the communities we aim to serve. Where You Fit In Millions of children are not receiving the education they deserve. Of the 61 million children worldwide who cannot attend primary school, 17 million will never step foot into a school if trends continue. Students around the world face difficulties accessing quality education due to conflict, discrimination, and lack of teacher training - and, in the wake of COVID-19, millions more children are also seeing interruptions in their daily lives, stability, and education, which makes it even more difficult for them to get the education they need to succeed. Our community of volunteers has created a series of novel and engaging story-based mathematics lessons that have proved highly engaging and effective with English-speaking students, including in a randomized controlled trial. We now want to expand the reach of these lessons by translating them into Hindi , in order to make them as accessible as possible to learners who have Hindi as a native language. This language is a particular focus for Oppia because we already have evidence that students who speak it would like to use our lessons, but have difficulty doing so because of the lack of translations. We are therefore seeking fluent or native-level speakers of Hindi to help with translating the lessons. Why Oppia is an Organization You Want to Work With Oppia has served over 2,000,000 users. Oppia focuses on effectiveness, and conducts rigorous user testing and RCTs to validate the lessons we offer. Learners using Oppia’s lessons have seen gains of 50+% from pre-test to post-test. Oppia's contributors actively help to provide students around the world with basic education. Please see https://medium.com/@ebelubhuhiose/86b97283edf4 and https://medium.com/@ojobusayo99/6e783aaddb74 for examples of our current work. Oppia has a community of hundreds of passionate volunteers from across the globe, so our meetings are held online at flexible times. What Our Translation Team Contributes Adding written translations of lessons to other languages. Advising on any barriers that students from different cultures might encounter when understanding and relating to the stories we have written to motivate the lessons. If you'd like to help out, please fill in our application form: https://forms.gle/HTCWBRixXo9gJj2o7 . Thank you!

We're seeking assistance with Communications/PR for pitching and media outreach. SmartResponse curates localized "How to Help" lists to help donors make more informed decisions about where to donate when disasters happen. We want this data utilized by media -- to inform their "how to help" lists. This is a highly rewarding activity -- if more support ($$) reaches the local organizations on the ground after disasters, people will get help faster, it'll be more effective/efficient = less suffering and fewer lives lost. We need help: * Engaging more journalists. * Writing more Op-Eds. * Building media lists. * Pitching stories/interviews.

  • UX Writing Team Member

If you’re fluent in written English and passionate about eradicating education inequality, keep reading! Oppia is looking for someone to join our UX Writing team to help streamline and improve our written words, content strategy, and information architecture across multiple products. Please fill in this form if you'd like to help out! https://forms.gle/Q8NwkNm8BZNUzwet7 . Note that the form includes a small design challenge as part of the application (see the last question). Who We Are The Oppia Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with the mission to provide high quality education to all. We do this through the creation and maintenance of our free-to-use platform, Oppia (https://www.oppia.org), the coordination of our passionate contributors, and the development of critical partnerships with NGOs in the communities we aim to serve. Even before COVID-19, students around the world were facing difficulties accessing quality education due to conflict, discrimination, lack of teacher training, and more. However, with COVID-19 forcing everyone to stay quarantined in their own homes, students now more than ever need access to free, quality education to ensure that they can continue to learn even if they cannot attend school. Where You Fit In Millions of children are not receiving the education they deserve. Of the 61 million children worldwide who cannot attend primary school, 17 million will never step foot into a school if trends continue. And, unfortunately, even those students who are in school may not receive the effective education they need. On Oppia’s website and Android beta app, our community of volunteers has created a series of mathematics lessons that have proved highly engaging and effective with students, including in a randomized controlled trial. However, we have also identified some areas with the website where new learners get confused, as well as opportunities to improve the user experience on both platforms from an onboarding and navigation perspective. • Volunteers needed to cleanup the streets in Redwood City! | Get Community Service Hours!

    Multiple LocationsRedwood City, CA 94061
It's Flexible! We'll work with your schedule

Our goal is to get as many Earth Heroes as possible to cleanup a location of their liking and inspiring others, while staying safe and respecting County and State orders. What are the "Street to Beach" cleanups? Simply put, it is a cleanup by yourself or with family and/or housemates following your county's orders for COVID-19. It can be around your neighborhood, at the beach, in a needy area, or anywhere actually. You could even "adopt" a specific location in need and care for it on a regular basis. https://www.pacificbeachcoalition.org/street-beach-cleanups/ Please Note: If you do a cleanup, you are doing it on your own accord and personally accepting any and all risks. Why should we do this? Neighborhood and street cleanups are fun and rewarding outdoor activities for you, your family and friends. Picking up litter from the streets keeps it from flowing into the ocean via our storm drains. We are now finding lots of litter, plastic bags, wrappers, disposable gloves, masks and food containers on our beaches and throughout the neighborhoods. Every single piece collected counts to saving our wildlife and habitats! How can we help? It is very easy! Make sure you have all your supplies ready, and go out! Don’t forget to let us know how much trash you collected so that we can add it to our total. Follow these 4 steps to have a safe and fun cleanup: 1. Go on our website to sign the online waiver 2. Grab your supplies (bucket, gloves, pick up sticks) 3. Download the Clean Swell app to record the trash you got (or more ways to log the trash on our website) 4. Go outside near your home Instructions to get community volunteer hours verified here: https://www.pacificbeachcoalition.org/student-volunteer-hours/ Thank you for caring! Pacific Beach Coalition

It is outdoors, accessible for a wide range of abilities and skill sets. There is access to water and bathrooms on site, but plan to bring a snack. Many of our Saturday volunteers are trans and non-binary and queer, several are on the Autism Spectrum, and nearly everyone started out not knowing much about gardening. • Donate books for children in need

contact us for exact drop-off locationBay Area, CA 94303
It's Flexible! We'll work with your schedule

To sign up for this opportunity, please fill out our sign-up form on our website: https://accessbooksbayarea.org/volunteer-opportunity/donate-books/ With the pandemic still raging around the Bay Area, school libraries remain closed, and curbside service is rare in the Bay Area's poorest neighborhoods. Access Books Bay Area is getting books into the hands of the children who need them most, building their literacy skills, getting their attention off of a screen to read a book, through our little library book boxes initiatives, and direct book giveaways at meal distributions. But we need your help! We need more books to stock these efforts. If you have books to give, either from your personal collection, or if you are willing to purchase them, please read on for our book donation specifications. WE DO NOT ACCEPT ADULT BOOKS OR BOOKS MORE THAN 5 YEARS OLD. We accept the following types of book donations: Used Books - You can give a new life to the books you don’t need anymore! Please only recent/high quality, elementary school books. Please no workbooks, or books that are worn or have been marked in. No adult books or young adult books. We’d rather have fewer, higher quality books than a larger number that includes low interest/old books. We generally have more need for books for younger readers, grades K-2. Graphic novels are very popular. Bilingual books in Spanish are welcome. Examples of popular titles: Dog Man (and other Dav Pilkey), Elephant & Piggie (and other Mo Willems), Geronimo Stilton, Fly Guy, Dork Diaries, Pete the Cat, Splat the Cat, I Survived, Babymouse, Hilo, Narwhal, Dragonbreath, and more New Books - of course we love receiving new books! You can purchase books in the following ways: Our Books4School wishlist - this is a small family-owned bookseller with a similar mission to ours, where you can purchase very low cost new books. Our Amazon Wishlist: https://tinyurl.com/abbawish (Please note that this wishlist generally shows the hardcover version of book titles, which we prefer for library use. Choose the paperback version - paperbacks are great for book drives, cheaper and the books will go to our little lending libraries!) Another option is to make your own shorter wishlist, of books your child likes, and share that for people to browse/buy from Donors can purchase books locally at Linden Tree or Books Inc. If you are interested in running a book drive in your neighborhood, and collecting even more books for us, please see our other volunteer opportunity to run a book drive here: https://accessbooksbayarea.org/volunteer-opportunity/conduct-a-book-drive-with-your-kids-for-a-lending-library-box/

In SF Bay Area, driving distance from South BaySan Francisco Bay Area, CA 94301
It's Flexible! We'll work with your schedule

To sign up for this opportunity, please fill out the sign-up form on our website: https://accessbooksbayarea.org/volunteer-opportunity/conduct-a-book-drive-with-your-kids-for-a-lending-library-box/ Share your love of reading, while giving back to the community. This is a great project for families, including families with young children! Run a book drive for Access Books Bay Area by collecting books and donations from relatives, classmates, neighbors, and community members. By doing so, you will contribute to Access Books Bay Area’s mission to bring engaging, high interest books to children who need them most. Students in the communities we serve do not have good access to new and inviting books, especially as compared to their peers in more affluent communities. During this time of distance learning, Access Books Bay Area has developed ways to bring books to these students in under-served communities. These kids want more books! You can help by conducting a book drive. Staff at Access Books Bay Area will guide you through the process. This is a great project for families. An adult or teen is needed to supervise, but there is lots of opportunity for children to be very active in this project. Volunteers will: Create materials to announce and advertise their book drive to family, friends, neighbors, community members, etc. Share these materials by posting to online or offline communities you are part of. Collect the books and monetary donations over a period of a few weeks (this is your 'Book Drive’). Deliver the books you have collected to one of our locations in the SF Bay Area. Children can be involved at every step of the process, including making a sign, sharing it, gathering the donations, and delivering the books to us. We will provide guidance, including specifics for your communications, descriptions of types of books we are seeking, wishlists for donors who would rather purchase books, etc. Your child can even make their own 'favorite books’ wishlist to share with donors, with the aim of sharing their favorite books with other kids. You can read about a book drive example here: https://www.accessbooksbayarea.org/ayaans-book-drive/ Sign up form: https://accessbooksbayarea.org/volunteer-opportunity/conduct-a-book-drive-with-your-kids-for-a-lending-library-box/

It's Flexible! We'll work with your schedule

Please sign up at www.peninsulafoodrunners.org or call us at 408-726-2742. Are you looking for a satisfying and flexible volunteer opportunity? Peninsula Food Runners is a volunteer organization dedicated to alleviating hunger and reducing food waste since 2013. Ten years now! We are seeking new volunteers in the San Jose and Santa Clara area. We invite you to join us in feeding the hungry. Peninsula Food Runner volunteers pick up excess perishable and prepared food from participating Donors (restaurants, corporate cafeterias, supermarkets, etc.), and then deliver the food directly to our Recipients (shelters, affordable housing, community food pantries, Boys and Girls Clubs, etc.). Did you know we waste 40% of the food we produce in this country? Starting 2022, the SB 1383 bill requires restaurants, supermarkets, etc. to donate their excess food instead of throwing it out. This is exciting: it means there will be even more surplus food available to donate to those in need! We seek more weekday drivers in Santa Clara County to transport the food to local non-profits which feed the hungry. Peninsula Food Runners works with donors and recipients in San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties (from South San Francisco to San Jose to Half Moon Bay). Check out our video on our website explaining what we do: www.peninsulafoodrunners.org Also check out our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/PeninsulaFoodRunners Weekday and weekend food runs (shifts) normally take less than 60-90 minutes. Use our ChowMatch.com website or app to find food runs that fit your schedule. Come join our team of volunteers! Go to www.peninsulafoodrunners.org and register under Volunteer Sign-Up. When you sign up, be sure to save your password! Also, be sure to read the food safety guidelines and take the food safety quiz to complete your registration. If you can be available on short notice, please validate your mobile number and check the box for last minute runs. Y ou can help get this food to those in need, and prevent it from going to waste! Also, if you want text reminders for the runs you sign up for, you must validate your mobile number. If you have a larger vehicle (SUV, truck or van), please indicate that. At this time, Friends is looking for volunteers under the age of 65 who can lift a 20-pound box and push a cart with 80 pounds of books. Masks and nitrile gloves are available on the sign-in table. Our operation of sorting and scanning books is a labor-intensive process. We have set an age qualifier out of an abundance of caution since, despite our requiring masks and social distancing, a steady stream of people walk past the Friends sorting area so you will be around others while volunteering. Friends is also working to find volunteer opportunities that can be done from home. We will give an update once opportunities have been identified. • Foster a Loving Adult Cat

    San Jose, CA 95112
It's Flexible! We'll work with your schedule

We urgently need Foster homes for Adult Kitties. Many of these adult kitties are surrendered to us or pulled from the shelter for various reasons, such as the owner's death, divorce, allergies, or moving out of the country. A key component of our rescue program is the foster home. Without adequate numbers of foster homes, we are limited in how many cats we can take in at one time. The principle behind fostering is to provide the cats entrusted to our care with a home environment in order to evaluate their habits and behaviors and to offer the new owner more information on the cat. We need caring, responsible cat lovers to join our foster home team by opening their homes and hearts to our rescue cats. 13th St. Cats provides all food and cat supplies and pays for medical care for our fosters. Please open your heart and home to these cats on their journey to their forever home! If you have any questions that aren't answered here, please contact us at: 408-566-3637 or info @13thstcats.org What Will I Need To Do as a Foster Parent? Foster homes are responsible for the daily care of the foster cat, including feeding, socializing, grooming, and of course, providing love and security to a special cat at an often difficult time in his or her life. You should have space, usually a spare room or bathroom, to house the fosters in, at least initially. If you have an existing cat, we recommend a separate bedroom to start so that the cats can slowly get to know your existing cat(s). We do go over best practices for fostering. How Long Does a Cat Stay in Foster Care? The foster stay varies with each cat. Cats with special needs may need to stay in foster care a bit longer. Foster homes control how long they are able to foster. How Much Does it Cost? Necessary veterinary care is provided by authorized veterinarians and paid for by 13th Street Cats. While we appreciate your donation of quality cat food or litter for your foster, we will happily provide them to you if you prefer. Litter boxes, toys, etc. are provided by 13th Street Cats.
