ORGANIZATION: The Salvation Army - San Jose, CA


Volunteers needed to help distribute food. Age Requirements: 14 or older, 4-5 volunteers needed every weekday. You must be confirmed to participate. No walk-ins.

Client Choice Method: Clients walk-up and volunteers distribute a variety of fresh produce and other food items like, meat, eggs, milk, bread, placing onto tables. Clients will select food they want and pack their own food carts.

Schedule: Mondays thru Fridays, 8:30am-12:30pm

Volunteers are required to wear plastic gloves for food handling but currently no longer required to wear face masks.

The Food Box Distribution Program, provides food to Seniors, Homeless and Families. Assistance in this program has more than doubled (since 2019, due to COVID), as more people faced job loss, reduction in working hours and/or increased costs for food, rent and other needs.

Appropriate Attire:
Wear comfortable closed-toe shoes, no sandals or flipflop types. Wear short or long sleeve shirts, no spaghetti straps, sleeveless, tank top type or mid-riff showing shirts. All shorts, dresses or skirts should be a longer length appropriate for bending or reaching items.

-Register as volunteer online (siliconvalley.salvationarmy.org. & click on "2024 Food Distribution")
-Attend Volunteer Orientation (25-30 minutes)
-Clearance on Megan's Law Registry
-Initial USDA Forms
-Must be 14 or older for Food Drive-Thru Area
-If feeling unwell, stay at home, contact volunteer coordinator, reschedule for another time.
