To sign up for this opportunity, please fill out the sign-up form on our website: https://accessbooksbayarea.org/volunteer-opportunity/conduct-a-book-drive-with-your-kids-for-a-lending-library-box/ Share your love of reading, while giving back to the community. This is a great project for families, including families with young children! Run a book drive for Access Books Bay Area by collecting books and donations from relatives, classmates, neighbors, and community members. By doing so, you will contribute to Access Books Bay Area’s mission to bring engaging, high interest books to children who need them most. Students in the communities we serve do not have good access to new and inviting books, especially as compared to their peers in more affluent communities. During this time of distance learning, Access Books Bay Area has developed ways to bring books to these students in under-served communities. These kids want more books! You can help by conducting a book drive. Staff at Access Books Bay Area will guide you through the process. This is a great project for families. An adult or teen is needed to supervise, but there is lots of opportunity for children to be very active in this project. Volunteers will: Create materials to announce and advertise their book drive to family, friends, neighbors, community members, etc. Share these materials by posting to online or offline communities you are part of. Collect the books and monetary donations over a period of a few weeks (this is your 'Book Drive’). Deliver the books you have collected to one of our locations in the SF Bay Area. Children can be involved at every step of the process, including making a sign, sharing it, gathering the donations, and delivering the books to us. We will provide guidance, including specifics for your communications, descriptions of types of books we are seeking, wishlists for donors who would rather purchase books, etc. Your child can even make their own 'favorite books’ wishlist to share with donors, with the aim of sharing their favorite books with other kids. You can read about a book drive example here: https://www.accessbooksbayarea.org/ayaans-book-drive/ Sign up form: https://accessbooksbayarea.org/volunteer-opportunity/conduct-a-book-drive-with-your-kids-for-a-lending-library-box/

Access Books Bay Area has a team of volunteers to help maintain the dozens of Little Free Libraries we have installed in San Jose. This is important work that will directly improve access to books for hundreds of children here in the Bay Area. We ask that volunteers make a 6 month commitment when signing up for one of these roles. Each role can be taken on by a small group, such as a family, school club, scout troop, or other organization. It is important that at least one member of the group can provide transportation, as driving is part of the job. For each of our zones listed below, we are looking for a person (or team of people) who will tend to the assigned Little Free Libraries and keep them well stocked with books for children to enjoy! Responsibilities: Visit your set of Little Free Libraries least twice a month, driving in your own vehicle Straighten-up and refill the Little Libraries with fresh books as needed Periodically pick up a supply of books in Palo Alto, store them safely at your home Keep notes on how the Little Free Library looks and if it needs any repairs. Be able to lift full boxes of books (about 25-30 pounds). 2 Available Assignments: (6 month commitment requested): South San Jose: Steward for 6 LFLs: Map Southeast San Jose / East of 101: Steward for 5 LFLs: Map If you have expressed interest in this opportunity in the past, feel free to try again. (All positions were filled, but one has recently re-opened.) Background: When schools were closed during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, Access Books Bay Area provided 45+ schools with Little Free Library ("LFLs") book lending boxes and a stock of books so children living in under-resourced communities could still have access to pleasure reading books. Even though schools have now reopened and on school days most students have access to their school libraries, we have found that the children still are enjoying the 24/7 access to pleasure reading books that the Little Free Libraries provide, often taking the books home and loving them so much they keep them to build their own libraries.

To sign up for this opportunity, please fill out our sign-up form on our website: https://accessbooksbayarea.org/volunteer-opportunity/donate-books/ With the pandemic still raging around the Bay Area, school libraries remain closed, and curbside service is rare in the Bay Area's poorest neighborhoods. Access Books Bay Area is getting books into the hands of the children who need them most, building their literacy skills, getting their attention off of a screen to read a book, through our little library book boxes initiatives, and direct book giveaways at meal distributions. But we need your help! We need more books to stock these efforts. If you have books to give, either from your personal collection, or if you are willing to purchase them, please read on for our book donation specifications. WE DO NOT ACCEPT ADULT BOOKS OR BOOKS MORE THAN 5 YEARS OLD. We accept the following types of book donations: Used Books - You can give a new life to the books you don’t need anymore! Please only recent/high quality, elementary school books. Please no workbooks, or books that are worn or have been marked in. No adult books or young adult books. We’d rather have fewer, higher quality books than a larger number that includes low interest/old books. We generally have more need for books for younger readers, grades K-2. Graphic novels are very popular. Bilingual books in Spanish are welcome. Examples of popular titles: Dog Man (and other Dav Pilkey), Elephant & Piggie (and other Mo Willems), Geronimo Stilton, Fly Guy, Dork Diaries, Pete the Cat, Splat the Cat, I Survived, Babymouse, Hilo, Narwhal, Dragonbreath, and more New Books - of course we love receiving new books! You can purchase books in the following ways: Our Books4School wishlist - this is a small family-owned bookseller with a similar mission to ours, where you can purchase very low cost new books. Our Amazon Wishlist: https://tinyurl.com/abbawish (Please note that this wishlist generally shows the hardcover version of book titles, which we prefer for library use. Choose the paperback version - paperbacks are great for book drives, cheaper and the books will go to our little lending libraries!) Another option is to make your own shorter wishlist, of books your child likes, and share that for people to browse/buy from Donors can purchase books locally at Linden Tree or Books Inc. If you are interested in running a book drive in your neighborhood, and collecting even more books for us, please see our other volunteer opportunity to run a book drive here: https://accessbooksbayarea.org/volunteer-opportunity/conduct-a-book-drive-with-your-kids-for-a-lending-library-box/
