Mission Statement

Friends of Heirloom Flowers is a volunteer gardening group that partners with the City of Fremont to maintain one of Fremont's historical parks. We have work parties every Tuesday at Shinn Park & Arboretum, 1251 Peralta Blvd., 10:00 to noon, then a social tea and coffee.

We introduce heirloom flowers into the gardens and maintain the integrity of the plants already there. We work as a flexible team, share ideas, preserve history, and enjoy the outdoors while making new friends.

Our quarterly membership meetings include speakers in gardening-related fields, and we take field trips to various gardens or related places of interest.

Description

We encourage all levels of gardeners to come help us maintain Shinn Park & Arboretum - seasoned gardeners to novices. We also welcome members whose schedules allow them to join us one or two Tuesdays a month. Just bring pruning shears, gloves, and a willingness to work.

We also encourage students to earn their extra credit and community service hours in our gardens; they just need to be mentored by one of our members.

ALL are welcome.

When I was a kid I always lived to garden with my grandma and not only did it make me messy but it did teach me a lot and this is why I would recommend it to my friends.

Having friends and peers gardening with me will make it much more enjoyable. Also I find gardening as a fun and relaxing habit which would help many deal with stress.

What a beautiful place to volunteer. The gardens are beautiful and there are many different types of gardens to work in. I have volunteered here for many years and have learned so much. The garden club members are very friendly and I enjoy the social time at noon after our work is done.

A truly worthwhile volunteer experience--exercise, sunshine, friends, all in a beautiful garden setting. You needn't be a gardening pro or available every Tuesday.

This is a great way to meet people with like interests and get outdoors at the same time. I've been a member since 2003 and recommend joining as a way to develope your knowledge and gardening skills. We also have great speakers and travel to different areas to check out other gardens!
