  • Make education accessible. Become a Hindi translator!

If you’re fluent in spoken and written Hindi and passionate about eradicating education inequality, keep reading! Oppia is looking for a translator to assist our team with translating our online story-based lessons from English to Hindi . To get started, please fill in this form: https://forms.gle/HTCWBRixXo9gJj2o7 Who We Are The Oppia Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with the mission to provide high quality education to all. We do this through the creation and maintenance of our free-to-use platform, Oppia (https://www.oppia.org), the coordination of our passionate contributors, and the development of critical partnerships with NGOs in the communities we aim to serve. Where You Fit In Millions of children are not receiving the education they deserve. Of the 61 million children worldwide who cannot attend primary school, 17 million will never step foot into a school if trends continue. Students around the world face difficulties accessing quality education due to conflict, discrimination, and lack of teacher training - and, in the wake of COVID-19, millions more children are also seeing interruptions in their daily lives, stability, and education, which makes it even more difficult for them to get the education they need to succeed. Our community of volunteers has created a series of novel and engaging story-based mathematics lessons that have proved highly engaging and effective with English-speaking students, including in a randomized controlled trial. We now want to expand the reach of these lessons by translating them into Hindi , in order to make them as accessible as possible to learners who have Hindi as a native language. This language is a particular focus for Oppia because we already have evidence that students who speak it would like to use our lessons, but have difficulty doing so because of the lack of translations. We are therefore seeking fluent or native-level speakers of Hindi to help with translating the lessons. Why Oppia is an Organization You Want to Work With Oppia has served over 2,000,000 users. Oppia focuses on effectiveness, and conducts rigorous user testing and RCTs to validate the lessons we offer. Learners using Oppia’s lessons have seen gains of 50+% from pre-test to post-test. Oppia's contributors actively help to provide students around the world with basic education. Please see https://medium.com/@ebelubhuhiose/86b97283edf4 and https://medium.com/@ojobusayo99/6e783aaddb74 for examples of our current work. Oppia has a community of hundreds of passionate volunteers from across the globe, so our meetings are held online at flexible times. What Our Translation Team Contributes Adding written translations of lessons to other languages. Advising on any barriers that students from different cultures might encounter when understanding and relating to the stories we have written to motivate the lessons. If you'd like to help out, please fill in our application form: https://forms.gle/HTCWBRixXo9gJj2o7 . Thank you!

  • UX Writing Team Member

If you’re fluent in written English and passionate about eradicating education inequality, keep reading! Oppia is looking for someone to join our UX Writing team to help streamline and improve our written words, content strategy, and information architecture across multiple products. Please fill in this form if you'd like to help out! https://forms.gle/Q8NwkNm8BZNUzwet7 . Note that the form includes a small design challenge as part of the application (see the last question). Note: To join the team, you will need to have an Android device. Who We Are The Oppia Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with the mission to provide high quality education to all. We do this through the creation and maintenance of our free-to-use platform, Oppia (https://www.oppia.org), the coordination of our passionate contributors, and the development of critical partnerships with NGOs in the communities we aim to serve. Even before COVID-19, students around the world were facing difficulties accessing quality education due to conflict, discrimination, lack of teacher training, and more. However, with COVID-19 forcing everyone to stay quarantined in their own homes, students now more than ever need access to free, quality education to ensure that they can continue to learn even if they cannot attend school. Where You Fit In Millions of children are not receiving the education they deserve. Of the 61 million children worldwide who cannot attend primary school, 17 million will never step foot into a school if trends continue. And, unfortunately, even those students who are in school may not receive the effective education they need. On Oppia’s website and Android beta app, our community of volunteers has created a series of mathematics lessons that have proved highly engaging and effective with students, including in a randomized controlled trial. However, we have also identified some areas with the website where new learners get confused, as well as opportunities to improve the user experience on both platforms from an onboarding and navigation perspective. We are in the process of launching an effort to rewrite and streamline the learner and teacher user experiences from a writing-first perspective, in order to make it more cogent and unified. This is particularly important for first-time users, or learners with limited exposure to technology-based education. As a UX Writing volunteer, you would be able to help with this initiative! • US TEEN penpals needed for Kenyan teens!!

Marafiki Penpal Program - SO IMPORTANT!! Marifiki means "friend" in Swahili. In 2020, NTS launched our penpal program to match our Kenyan students with U.S. high school students. Everyone exchanges letters each month. It's hard to believe in this hyper-connected world but for the NTS students, this is their first contact with a peer outside of Kenya! It’s also a chance to practice both written and spoken English, and to learn about another culture. We are expanding the program and seek 10 new penpals from the United States who will begin NOW. You must commit to a minimum of a year and a half, writing monthly. Every month, your penpal will send you a letter and then you will write back. Each letter is guided by an NTS staff member, so you'll have plenty of support. Students already in the program have been writing for nearly 2 years, watching their Kenyan penpals grow as their English skills improve. Who We Are NTS a not-for-profit 3-year vocational school located in the Nyamboyo Village in southwestern Kenya. We provide professional, technical education to the economically disadvantaged teens and young adults of the community. Our students are ages 14-20 and all have family histories of poverty, lack of education and job opportunities, and chronic food insecurity. At NTS, they receive professional vocational training, 3 meals a day to combat hunger and malnutrition, English-language classes, computer training, and daily COVID-safe sports activities. Our students thrive professionally, physically, and psychologically.

  • *URGENT* KING COUNTY BIDEWW AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM DRIVER

    12320 80th Avenue SouthSeattle, WA 98178
It's Flexible! We'll work with your schedule

JOB DESCRIPTION FOR KING COUNTY BIDEWW AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM DRIVER BIDEWW AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM SUMMARY After several parents engaged us to create a program that will support West African kids with their academic, life and social skills needs, in February of 2022, WAWAC finally created what we call our "BIDEWW" (STAR) After School Program. WAWAC's BIDEWW/star after-school program and homework club seeks to create a culturally appropriate fun and new learning environment that fosters social skills, and provides learning opportunities for our kids through exciting semi-structured activities such as science experiments, cooking classes, arts projects, singing, dancing, music, cinematography, storytelling and more at a culturally appropriate setting for free of charge. Since the kids spend a lot of time at school where they learn in a structured and formal environment, the BIDEWW After School program is done in a loose environment where they still learn fun stuff that they create themselves. Additional recreational activities also take place to encourage them to stay active, healthy, and connected with each other. This is also a platform for West African kids to interact, learn from each other and build their own community. It is available to school-aged children 5 to 17 years old in Snohomish and King Counties twice a week.Through this platform, the kids of our community explore their artistic instincts through collaborative art projects. It holds significant value for our kids because it inspires them to be creatively driven at an early age. An opportunity that they don't ordinarily receive from their parents because a lot of West African parents deem art as a "waste of time" -This grossly deprives kids the possibility to explore their creativity. We pride ourselves in opening our program to a wide range of African kids tailored to their unique needs, identity and values. In Lynnwood, WAWAC offers this program twice a week (Wednesday's and Friday's (4:30pm to 7:00 pm) and needs support helping to maintain and improve this essential service. This location is a high need as both the kids and the parents eagerly look forward to this program. After successfully implementing the pilot Bideww After School program in Snohomish County, in September of 2022, WAWAC partnered with School’s Out Washington to start a similar program in King County. This program is also offered to the West African youths in King County twice a week ( Tuesdays and Thursdays 2:35pm to 5pm) at Dimmitt Middle School (12320 80th Ave S, Seattle, WA 98178) Take a look at what a week can look like in the afterschool program: here or here . JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Safely transport Bideww students to and from Dimmitt Middle School on time, ensuring strict adherence to all traffic rules and regulations. Maintain a clean and well-maintained vehicle, conducting routine inspections and reporting any issues to the ED/WAWAC Bideww Staff. Develop a positive and supportive rapport with students, fostering a safe and comfortable atmosphere during transportation. Implement and follow established pick-up and drop-off schedules, making adjustments as necessary and informing relevant parties of any changes. Collaborate with after-school program coordinators to ensure smooth transitions between school and the program's activities. Maintain accurate records of daily transportation activities, including attendance, mileage, and any incidents or concerns. Be responsive to the individual needs of students, providing assistance as needed and addressing any behavioral or safety issues promptly. Attend regular meetings and training sessions to stay informed about changes in procedures, policies, and best practices related to student transportation. Lynnwood, WA 98036
It's Flexible! We'll work with your schedule

Make a difference in the lives of people living with memory loss! MCI/Early Stage Memory Loss Support Group Facilitator Are you retired from healthcare and still want to give? Are you a social worker or healthcare professional looking to make a difference in the lives of people living with memory loss? Our MCI/ Early Stage Memory Loss (ESML) Support Groups provide an invaluable network that people with memory loss can turn to for advice and encouragement. You can help them feel socially connected and give them a sense of belonging and purpose. Support Group Volunteer Facilitators create a space for that important interaction by encouraging conversation and maintaining a positive and caring environment. "It was an opportunity to interact with people at the same stage I was in and it helped me have a greater understanding that I’m not alone. And I don’t feel alone anymore." ESML Program Participant Our volunteers continuously learn and grow alongside the participants while serving a population in need of great support. "When I began leading the ESML program, I realized that I did carry a stigma based on a fear of not knowing how to interact with people with memory loss and what to expect from them," said Melinda an ESML Walk Volunteer. "The greatest thing I’ve learned is that people with memory loss are just people. And even though they have memory loss-they’re here. They may not be able to respond to you the way people without memory loss respond, but when they give you a hug, grab your hand, look you in the eye-they’re here." We provide training and opportunities for growth. Our Chapter trained volunteers receive excellent training, ongoing support, resources, and continuing education opportunities. Individuals who are often best qualified as an early stage memory loss support group facilitator include working or retired social workers, nurses and other healthcare professionals, educators, clergy, and counselors. Commitment of at least one year is required. Be a part of our team! Contact Jerri Wood at jwood@alz.org

Our goal is to get as many Earth Heroes as possible to cleanup a location of their liking and inspiring others, while staying safe and respecting County and State orders. What are the "Street to Beach" cleanups? Simply put, it is a cleanup by yourself or with family and/or housemates following your county's orders for COVID-19. It can be around your neighborhood, at the beach, in a needy area, or anywhere actually. You could even "adopt" a specific location in need and care for it on a regular basis. https://www.pacificbeachcoalition.org/street-beach-cleanups/ Please Note: If you do a cleanup, you are doing it on your own accord and personally accepting any and all risks. Why should we do this? Neighborhood and street cleanups are fun and rewarding outdoor activities for you, your family and friends. Picking up litter from the streets keeps it from flowing into the ocean via our storm drains. We are now finding lots of litter, plastic bags, wrappers, disposable gloves, masks and food containers on our beaches and throughout the neighborhoods. Every single piece collected counts to saving our wildlife and habitats! How can we help? It is very easy! Make sure you have all your supplies ready, and go out! Don’t forget to let us know how much trash you collected so that we can add it to our total. Follow these 4 steps to have a safe and fun cleanup: 1. Go on our website to sign the online waiver 2. Grab your supplies (bucket, gloves, pick up sticks) 3. Download the Clean Swell app to record the trash you got (or more ways to log the trash on our website) 4. Go outside near your home Instructions to get community volunteer hours verified here: https://www.pacificbeachcoalition.org/student-volunteer-hours/ Thank you for caring! Pacific Beach Coalition

Opening a birthday giving chapter is easy, fun, and a great way to give back to the community! Here's how it works: 1. We schedule a video call with you to explain how the process works. 2. Our first choice is to find a Salvation Army location (or another organization that is willing to pick up the birthday bags from your house) that is geographically close to where you live. 3. We contact the Salvation Army (or another organization that is willing to pick up the birthday bags from your house) and explain The Birthday Giving Program's mission. This organization should be able to pick up the birthday bags from your house. 4. You order the birthday bag supplies off of Amazon or another online store and have the gifts shipped to your house. Each birthday bag costs between $5 and $10, depending on how many gifts you decide to put in the bag. Your goal is to provide 10 birthday bags to the organization each month. Each birthday bag includes the same gift items, which will go to kids of a specific age group! 5. Once you have packed the birthday bags, you contact the organization and they pick up the birthday bags from your house! If you are interested in serving the senior citizen or veterans division let us know and we can find an organization to connect you with!
