Volunteer tutors offer individualized support to neurodiverse adults and adults with learning differences wanting to improve their basic reading and writing skills, or who are wanting to get their GED. Tutoring pairs can also focus on basic computer skills (email, typing, etc) or math. Tutors develop lesson plans focused on individual students' needs from beginner to intermediate level. We work with a diverse group of both native and non-native English speakers at our learning center in Lake City. People of color and bilingual/multilingual individuals are encouraged to apply.

This is an AmeriCorps position and will be part of our instructional team working out of our Learning Center in the Lake City neighborhood of Seattle. AmeriCorps positions are full-time for 10.5 months (September 1, 2019 - July 15, 2020). Responsibilities: Manage a caseload of 10 -20 students, conduct intake interviews and ongoing assessments to help students establish a learning plan. Connect students with other learning opportunities and resources to help them achieve their ABE/GED/DL, and life, goals Plan and teach classes incorporating ABE/GED and beginning DL skills Help volunteers implement supported computer lab time for students to improve DL skills and access online learning opportunities Recruit, curate training for and train volunteers to serve as ABE/GED or integrated DL tutors, to provide support to students to increase DL skills Develop and implement supported computer lab time for students to access online opportunities and/or prepare for the GED Run quarterly DL trainings (in-person and Zoom) for new students and volunteers and include 3 new and effective volunteer instruction practices AmeriCorps Basic Requirements: AmeriCorps members must be at least 18 years of age, US citizens or have permanent resident status, and be able to commit to full time service for 10.5 months from September 1, 2023 - July 15, 2024. A strong ethic of service and commitment to anti-poverty work Demonstrated interest in working in adult education/digital literacy, and/or formal education in this field Proficiency in English, ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing Excellent organizational abilities, project, and time management skills Proficiency with Google Suite and MS office programs including Outlook & Teams Willingness to maintain a strong work ethic in the face of challenges such as living within the means of the AmeriCorps living stipend Experience managing volunteers, and/or working with homeless, diverse, or low-income populations Willing to work two evenings and occasional weekends Compensation & Benefits: AmeriCorps members receive a living allowance of $2,171.43 per month from the Washington Service Corps. Do you know that 1 in 6 adults in Washington State lack the basic literacy skills needed to get a livable wage job? Help make a difference by volunteering with a diverse population of low-income adult learners (our students speak over 40 languages. Top 5: Amharic, Tigrinya, Spanish, Mandarin, and Somali), working to improve their lives and become more self-sufficient. As a class assistant you will support an instructor in either an ESOL, Reading & Writing, Citizenship, Conversation or Computer class. Classes focus on skill levels, beginning to advanced, in reading, writing, speaking/listening, or specific topics. (work-skills, citizenship, GED prep). Our classes are small and student-focused serving immigrants/refugees and native English speakers. Opportunities available online or in-person (COVID precautions in place) at our Lake City, Seattle center. Training and support provided. Literacy Source ( https://youtu.be/c_2XY2P5bXc) is an adult education non-profit based in the Lake City neighborhood of North Seattle. We have a variety of volunteer opportunities available at different locations, depending on your interests, skills, location, and time. Experience working with adult immigrants and/or refugees is a plus, although not required. The top 5 first languages among our students are Amharic, Tigrinya, Spanish, Mandarin, and Somali, although combined our students speak more than 40 languages.
