One spark of connection has great possibility to be meaningful and profound. Hi, my name is SJ and I am reaching out to friends of Pike Place Market. I just started working on program expansion at Pike Market Senior Center. What I am learning is incredible. The history of the Market, the community and the strongholds of care that have been built into the culture of the country’s oldest farmers market are amazing. I live just up the hill and I am so excited to have been chosen to do this work. The ability to work in the community I live in is a great privilege. Seattle is a tough place right now. Downtown is suffering. And, I still love it so much. Visiting Pike Place Market has brought great joy to my life for over 30 years. 12.5% of Seattle is living in poverty; 24% in the Pike Place neighborhood. The disparity is stark and it is growing. This is a daily reality for most of our members. Our members come to us from a wide variety of experiences. Most of them are dealing with social isolation and lacking in feelings of community. A great uniting force is activity and shared experience. Community building can happen in a short conversation or a kind gesture. Older adults live throughout Downtown Seattle as residents of Pike Place Market and other subsidized apartment buildings. Pike Market Senior Center is expanding programming to reach all of them. They deserve care and they deserve our attention. We recently surveyed a group of Senior Center members to get their ideas about future programming. They expressed interest in a wide variety of activities and subjects. Currently, we are recruiting volunteers to lead and support new programs. Activities include social, creative, educational, fitness & health, and support groups, such as: Guest Speakers: local history, arts, music, any + all! Creative aging Computer + technology Writing + journaling Languages Dancing - salsa, line, tango, folk, ballroom, any + all! Card games Karaoke Yoga Tai Chi Strength + balance, Meditation Drawing, painting, watercolor, crafts Book + movie club Support Groups: diabetes, smoking cessation, management of chronic illness This is what our members have shared with us about what they would like to see at their senior center! We are open and eager to hear about the skills, talents, and passions that you can bring to the table. Sincerely, Sarah Jane Durkee Program Expansion
