Harbor Heights Elementary Mentor

Volunteers mentors are needed at Harbor Heights Elementary School on Wednesdays in it's after-school program. The focus is aimed at helping elementary age students improve their reading skills, and work on math basic (such as flash cards and games). They meet Wednesdays from 3:45-4:45 pm. Communities In Schools of Peninsula is the leading drop-out prevention program in the nation and it is has helped thousands of children stay in school and achieve higher academic success with the help of a caring, consistent adult in their lives. Pet Partner Volunteer Reading Team @ multiple schools

Volunteer Pet Partner teams are needed at Purdy Elementary, Discovery Elementary, Peninsula High School, Key Peninsula Middle School and Goodman Middle School. The volunteer pet teams will help early readers boost literacy and gain confidence in their reading skills. This program will meet once a week for one hour. Little Eagles Reading Volunteer @ Evergreen Elementary

Communities In Schools of Peninsula (CISP) serves children and families residing within the boundaries of Peninsula School District (Key Peninsula/Gig Harbor). CISP partners with the schools and local community agencies to provide programs and services that alleviate the barriers impeding the learning of our youth.

Having volunteered as a math mentor for 6th-8th graders and reading mentor for 2nd and 3rd graders for the past six years, I have seen the results. The students served, who are from one to several years behind, move up dramatically. Last year's young readers advanced nearly a full grade level on average and math students advanced by more than one grade level. This is a very effective program.
