Do you want to end hunger in your community?

Imagine a city where people have equal access to healthy and culturally appropriate food. The Community Food Education (CFE) at Solid Ground fosters community connections through gardening education, sustainable food production, environmental stewardship, and raising awareness about good nutrition and food justice. We also fight hunger by providing low-income individuals with seeds and materials, and supporting backyard gardeners in donating fruits and vegetables grown in King County.

If you share our vision, join us on the Marra Farm Giving Garden in Seattle's South Park neighborhood!

As a Field Trip Educator, you will help lead hands-on educational field trips at the Giving Garden for elementary school students. Topics include the journey of food, exploring the soil, cooking, nutrition, creatures like bees and worms, and food justice. Volunteers can expect to:

  • Teaching elementary school students about gardening, food, and nutrition outside during variable weather (no formal education required)
  • Share information about food in a nuanced, nonjudgmental way that centers food access, anti-racism, and anti-oppression
  • Work with openness, compassion, and understanding while collaborating with staff, volunteers, and students with a variety of racial, cultural, and class backgrounds, lifestyles, and sexual orientations

To Apply: Interested in volunteering or learning more about the opportunity? Contact Solid Ground Marra Farm today! We will get back to you within 3-5 business days with next steps.

BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color), and people with the lived experience of food insecurity are strongly encouraged to volunteer.

About Solid Ground

Location:

1501 N 45TH ST, SEATTLE, WA 98103, US

Mission Statement

Our mission... Solid Ground works to end poverty and undo racism and other oppressions that are root causes of poverty. Our vision... Solid Ground believes our community can move beyond poverty and oppression to a place where all people have access to quality housing, nutritious food, equal justice and opportunities to thrive. Our values... Solid Ground is committed to working with compassion, integrity, accountability, creativity and an anti-oppression approach to end homelessness, hunger, inequality and other barriers to social justice. We value collaboration and leadership from the communities we serve.

Description

Our history...

Solid Ground was founded in 1974 by community leaders and concerned citizens of one of Seattle's then most economically devastated neighborhoods, Fremont. Originally called the Fremont Public Association, our services - emergency food bank, clothing bank, and employment program - reflected the desperate needs and determined response of a mobilized and committed neighborhood.

Solid Ground today...

As the scope and severity of homelessness and poverty have increased over the years, so too have our reach to our greater community and our range of services. Now based in Seattle’s Wallingford neighborhood, our 30 programs and services help more than 60,000 households each year overcome poverty and build better futures throughout King County and beyond.
