The Anixter Center is seeking volunteer tutors for our adult literacy program! Volunteers would be expected to complete approximately fourteen hours of online training on being a literacy tutor and working with adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Once training is complete we ask that volunteers commit to one hour a week of one-on-one tutoring for a minimum of three months but we would of course prefer that they stick around longer! We currently have in person (socially distanced, wearing a mask, outdoors when feasible) options or virtual options depending on the learner’s access to and ability to use the internet.

Where You Fit In Millions of children are not receiving the education they deserve. Of the 61 million children worldwide who cannot attend primary school, 17 million will never step foot into a school if trends continue. And, unfortunately, even those students who are in school may not receive the effective education they need. On Oppia’s website and Android beta app, our community of volunteers has created a series of mathematics lessons that have proved highly engaging and effective with students, including in a randomized controlled trial. However, we have also identified some areas with the website where new learners get confused, as well as opportunities to improve the user experience on both platforms from an onboarding and navigation perspective. We are in the process of launching an effort to rewrite and streamline the learner and teacher user experiences from a writing-first perspective, in order to make it more cogent and unified. GIVING VIRTUAL VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
with South Valley HospiceShow seniors that they are loved by making cards, sending emails, and making crafts. Seniors are sitting alone in their rooms with many having few or even no family visits. Here is where you come in. You can show them they are loved and appreciated by making them cards and sending emails. Brighten up their rooms with decorations, and give them comfort with wheel chair pillows. One volunteer is even making puzzles for them to do. Some are writing stories for them to read. We want to bring smiles to their faces. We also have a need for people to make educational videos. Make videos and/or interesting interactive curriculum for volunteer training. I would like the volunteers to get their training online watching and interacting with something fun and engaging. After all, volunteering should be enjoyable! We offer social and educational sessions by phone and video. We're looking for volunteers to facilitate our 30-minute BRAIN AEROBICS session on Fridays at 1:00 pm-1:30 pm Central Standard Time (CST). The time commitment is about an hour, from 12:45 pm-1:45 pm CST to account for pre and post-session tasks. If every Friday is too much of a commitment, we can create a rotational schedule. Our Brain Aerobics session is Family Feud-style. You pull up Family Feud-type questions online and read them to participants over the phone and they come up with the answers. Career mentors are staff members that provide individualized services to participants. Some service providers refer to these staff as career coaches, case managers, or youth development specialists. The Partnership uses the term "career mentor" to recognize the unique relationship that effective staff members develop with young adults. Providing Opportunity Youth with quality career exploration, training and internship services is much more impactful when coupled with one-on-one support and mentoring. Staff are often required to provide young participants with guidance, motivation and a positive example, as they assist them in pursuing employment and training goals. They serve as mentors, even when not specifically identified as such. Career mentors should have at least 3 years of related work experience. Please note that some referral sources, such as juvenile justice agencies or schools, may require that staff complete a criminal background check and meet specific qualifications prior to working with youth. Marafiki Penpal Program - SO IMPORTANT!! Marifiki means "friend" in Swahili. In 2020, NTS launched our penpal program to match our Kenyan students with U.S. high school students. Everyone exchanges letters each month.It's hard to believe in this hyper-connected world but for the NTS students, this is their first contact with a peer outside of Kenya! It’s also a chance to practice both written and spoken English, and to learn about another culture. We are expanding the program and seek 10 new penpals from the United States who will begin NOW. You must commit to a minimum of a year and a half, writing monthly. Every month, your penpal will send you a letter and then you will write back. Each letter is guided by an NTS staff member, so you'll have plenty of support. Students already in the program have been writing for nearly 2 years, watching their Kenyan penpals grow as their English skills improve. Who We Are NTS a not-for-profit 3-year vocational school located in the Nyamboyo Village in southwestern Kenya. We provide professional, technical education to the economically disadvantaged teens and young adults of the community. Our students are ages 14-20 and all have family histories of poverty, lack of education and job opportunities, and chronic food insecurity. The Health Hub Volunteer shift starts: Wednesday at Marin Community Clinic (3110 Kerner Blvd, San Rafael): 11:30am - 3:30pm Thursdays at Marin Community Clinic (6100 Redwood Blvd, Novato): 11:30am - 3:30pm Please note: Health Hub takes place outdoors, most often on the sidewalk or in a parking lot. Volunteer service will include, but is not limited to, unloading and sorting food supplies, packaging and organizing food bags, distributing and recording food to the community, monitoring pedestrian and vehicle traffic, as well as site set up and clean up. What to bring: To further protect the health of volunteers and participants we are asking volunteers to bring: Mask/facial covering (one-way valve masks are not acceptable) Wear closed toe shoes We will be outside, wear comfortable clothing (we recommend layers, a hat, and sunscreen due to the ever-changing weather conditions) Be aware there will not be a place to store personal belongings, please do not bring valuables Please bring a secure lidded water bottle and a snack Volunteers must wear gloves at all times (provided by the Health Hub program at MCC) We ask that any volunteer who does not feel well refrain from attending their volunteer shift Volunteers should be able to lift 30 to 40 pounds Length Health Hubs of food distribution is dependent on attendance - We currently provide food assistance to more than 1,000 people every week, but we do not know how many participants will arrive weekly or if they will all arrive early/late. An important part of what the intern will do is to field phone inquiries, connecting callers to information & referrals to local and regional resources and facilitating access to WCRC and other services. This internship is an excellent opportunity for an intern to be engaged with several WCRC programs and services to learn how they work together to serve WCRC’s clients and community. The intern will become conversant in WCRC’s programs and services and will develop a solid understanding of relevant external local health and wellness resources available for underserved populations. The internship is an in-person only opportunity. Spanish language skills are a real plus, but not required. Help nature, get exercise, learn in local creeks and nature

We'll work with your scheduleWhile we shelter in place to avoid spreading COVID-19, it's important for mental and physical health of all ages to get outdoors, get exercise, and enjoy nature. Help the environment, feel connected to nature and others, learn, and get healthy exercise as a volunteer with 25-year-old Friends of Five Creeks, at sites from North Berkeley to Richmond. Please email f5creeks@gmail.com for information. Tell us something about yourself and what you are looking for. Are you free weekdays or weekends? About how many hours per week or month? Are you looking for something for a group? What area do you live in, and how would you expect to reach sites (e.g. car, bicycle, bus). We might know of opportunities with others closer to you. F5C has several kinds of opportunities in urban nature, along creeks and shorelines and in parks: Individuals or families can "adopt" a small site or project to maintain and beautify, working with guidance but independently, on their own time. This could be as little as a monthly walk to check for specific harmful invasives. A few people can join our "weekday weed warriors," a small group working at varied sites on Tuesday mornings, with no obligation and no RSVP. We have part-time, short-term paid internships for beginning environmental professionals: students close to graduation or recent graduates seeking environmental careers. A small number of high-school juniors or seniors working part-time and short term as interns. These interns should have a demonstrated interest in the environment, be able to work semi-independently, be able to reach our sites on their own (without parents, by foot, bicycle, or transit). They should be significantly helped by the experience, e.g. through income and/or help with college admission or a future job. We are cautiously resuming work parties for fairly small groups, as well as for the general public with signup in advance. Check our web site for what may be scheduled, or email to ask. Anyone can help clean the environment, in your neighborhood or in beautiful natural areas, on your own, with your family, or with friends. The coronavirus crisis has greatly decreased litter -- when this is over, let's keep it this way! You need gloves, bags, a grabber (available at hardware stores), and common sense -- don't pick up anything sharp or disgusting. (The California Coastal Commission's guidelines are at https://www.coastal.ca.gov/publiced/ccd/Guidance.pdf.) Many very young children love picking up trash. Older ones, and adults, can have contests, like who can find the weirdest thing (post on social media?) You also can record your results with the Ocean Conservancy's free Clean Swell app, contributing to knowledge worldwide. Myriad citizen-science projects let you enjoy the outdoors, learn about nature, contribute to knowledge, and help the environment. The free iNaturalist app, from San Francisco's California Academy of Sciences, lets you photograph and report wild plants and animals, and helps you identify them, so you learn while you contribute to knowledge. A kid-friendly companion app, Seek, makes this great for families. Projects that use iNaturalist to contribute to much-needed environmental knowledge include Redwood Watch and the California Pollination Project. Other projects with valuable environmental goals include the Western Monarch Milkweed Mapper, CalDNA (soil samples), the Cattail Monitoring Project (with the US Geological Survey) Green Watch (reporting state of outdoor places and transit), and Sky at Night (measuring light in the night sky, with the National Optical Astronomy Observatory). A good way to find the project that suits you is SciStarter.org. There are thousands: Set it to look for projects in your area, choose a topic from the menu, and look for projects with stable sponsors and clear scientific or environmental goals.

Be willing and able to relate to a diverse patient population without bias as to race, color, religion, sexual orientation and/or social status. Be mindful of your position.
