  • UX Writing Team Member

If you’re fluent in written English and passionate about eradicating education inequality, keep reading! Oppia is looking for someone to join our UX Writing team to help streamline and improve our written words, content strategy, and information architecture across multiple products. Please fill in this form if you'd like to help out! https://forms.gle/Q8NwkNm8BZNUzwet7 . Note that the form includes a small design challenge as part of the application (see the last question). Who We Are The Oppia Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with the mission to provide high quality education to all. We do this through the creation and maintenance of our free-to-use platform, Oppia (https://www.oppia.org), the coordination of our passionate contributors, and the development of critical partnerships with NGOs in the communities we aim to serve. Even before COVID-19, students around the world were facing difficulties accessing quality education due to conflict, discrimination, lack of teacher training, and more. However, with COVID-19 forcing everyone to stay quarantined in their own homes, students now more than ever need access to free, quality education to ensure that they can continue to learn even if they cannot attend school. Where You Fit In Millions of children are not receiving the education they deserve. Of the 61 million children worldwide who cannot attend primary school, 17 million will never step foot into a school if trends continue. And, unfortunately, even those students who are in school may not receive the effective education they need. On Oppia’s website and Android beta app, our community of volunteers has created a series of mathematics lessons that have proved highly engaging and effective with students, including in a randomized controlled trial. However, we have also identified some areas with the website where new learners get confused, as well as opportunities to improve the user experience on both platforms from an onboarding and navigation perspective. We are in the process of launching an effort to rewrite and streamline the learner and teacher user experiences from a writing-first perspective, in order to make it more cogent and unified. This is particularly important for first-time users, or learners with limited exposure to technology-based education. As a UX Writing volunteer, you would be able to help with this initiative! Why Oppia is an Organization You Want to Work With Oppia has served over 2,000,000 users. Oppia focuses on effectiveness, and conducts rigorous user testing and RCTs to validate the lessons we offer. Learners using Oppia’s lessons have seen gains of 50+% from pre-test to post-test. Oppia's contributors actively help to provide students around the world with basic education. Please see https://medium.com/@ebelubhuhiose/86b97283edf4 and https://medium.com/@ojobusayo99/6e783aaddb74 for examples of our current work. Oppia has a community of hundreds of passionate volunteers from across the globe, so our meetings are held online at flexible times. What Our UX Writing Team contributes (but is not limited to) Write clear and concise content across multiple aspects of the product (including, but not limited to, labels and navigational elements, buttons, tutorials, and notifications). Work with other UX writers to maintain and evolve voice and tone for the content style guide, which aims to help students and teachers feel welcome and supported when using Oppia’s platform and lessons. Work from a global-first perspective, collaborating with the translations and partnerships teams to use language that internationalizes well. You'll also get to work with a product team of designers, researchers, product managers, and engineers from all around the world! There will be opportunities to share your work with them, receive feedback, and contribute to the team through mentoring, onboarding or recruiting. If you'd like to help out, please fill in our form: https://forms.gle/Q8NwkNm8BZNUzwet7 . Thanks!

  • Make education accessible. Become a Hindi translator!

If you’re fluent in spoken and written Hindi and passionate about eradicating education inequality, keep reading! Oppia is looking for a translator to assist our team with translating our online story-based lessons from English to Hindi . To get started, please fill in this form: https://forms.gle/HTCWBRixXo9gJj2o7 Who We Are The Oppia Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with the mission to provide high quality education to all. We do this through the creation and maintenance of our free-to-use platform, Oppia (https://www.oppia.org), the coordination of our passionate contributors, and the development of critical partnerships with NGOs in the communities we aim to serve. Where You Fit In Millions of children are not receiving the education they deserve. Of the 61 million children worldwide who cannot attend primary school, 17 million will never step foot into a school if trends continue. Students around the world face difficulties accessing quality education due to conflict, discrimination, and lack of teacher training - and, in the wake of COVID-19, millions more children are also seeing interruptions in their daily lives, stability, and education, which makes it even more difficult for them to get the education they need to succeed. Our community of volunteers has created a series of novel and engaging story-based mathematics lessons that have proved highly engaging and effective with English-speaking students, including in a randomized controlled trial. We now want to expand the reach of these lessons by translating them into Hindi , in order to make them as accessible as possible to learners who have Hindi as a native language. This language is a particular focus for Oppia because we already have evidence that students who speak it would like to use our lessons, but have difficulty doing so because of the lack of translations. We are therefore seeking fluent or native-level speakers of Hindi to help with translating the lessons. What Our Translation Team Contributes Adding written translations of lessons to other languages. Advising on any barriers that students from different cultures might encounter when understanding and relating to the stories we have written to motivate the lessons. If you'd like to help out, please fill in our application form: https://forms.gle/HTCWBRixXo9gJj2o7 . Thank you!

  • US TEEN penpals needed for Kenyan teens!!

Marafiki Penpal Program - SO IMPORTANT!! Marifiki means "friend" in Swahili. In 2020, NTS launched our penpal program to match our Kenyan students with U.S. high school students. Everyone exchanges letters each month. It's hard to believe in this hyper-connected world but for the NTS students, this is their first contact with a peer outside of Kenya! It’s also a chance to practice both written and spoken English, and to learn about another culture. We are expanding the program and seek 10 new penpals from the United States who will begin NOW. You must commit to a minimum of a year and a half, writing monthly. Every month, your penpal will send you a letter and then you will write back. Each letter is guided by an NTS staff member, so you'll have plenty of support. Students already in the program have been writing for nearly 2 years, watching their Kenyan penpals grow as their English skills improve. Who We Are NTS a not-for-profit 3-year vocational school located in the Nyamboyo Village in southwestern Kenya. We provide professional, technical education to the economically disadvantaged teens and young adults of the community. Our students are ages 14-20 and all have family histories of poverty, lack of education and job opportunities, and chronic food insecurity. At NTS, they receive professional vocational training, 3 meals a day to combat hunger and malnutrition, English-language classes, computer training, and daily COVID-safe sports activities. Our students thrive professionally, physically, and psychologically.

CASA of San Mateo County supports Court Appointed Special Advocates(CASAs) giving a foster child a voice in the court room. CASA volunteers create a one-on-one, consistent relationship with the child they serve. They also mentor the child throughout the time the child is under the court's supervision. As part of our commitment to embracing the community that we serve, CASA of San Mateo County strives to reach volunteers that represent the diversity of our area, including gender. Last fiscal year 12% of our volunteers identified as male compared to the 88% identifying as female. CASA of San Mateo County wants to change this statistic! Male Mentor's, 21 years or older, can change and empower a young man's life and be a positive role model for that child. Currently, many male children are left without a CASA advocate due to lack of male volunteers. Multiple LocationsSan Bruno, CA 94066
It's Flexible! We'll work with your schedule

Our goal is to get as many Earth Heroes as possible to cleanup a location of their liking and inspiring others, while staying safe and respecting County and State orders. What are the "Street to Beach" cleanups? Simply put, it is a cleanup by yourself or with family and/or housemates following your county's orders for COVID-19. It can be around your neighborhood, at the beach, in a needy area, or anywhere actually. You could even "adopt" a specific location in need and care for it on a regular basis. https://www.pacificbeachcoalition.org/street-beach-cleanups/ Please Note: If you do a cleanup, you are doing it on your own accord and personally accepting any and all risks. Why should we do this? Neighborhood and street cleanups are fun and rewarding outdoor activities for you, your family and friends. Picking up litter from the streets keeps it from flowing into the ocean via our storm drains. We are now finding lots of litter, plastic bags, wrappers, disposable gloves, masks and food containers on our beaches and throughout the neighborhoods. Every single piece collected counts to saving our wildlife and habitats! How can we help? It is very easy! Make sure you have all your supplies ready, and go out! Don’t forget to let us know how much trash you collected so that we can add it to our total. Follow these 4 steps to have a safe and fun cleanup: 1. Go on our website to sign the online waiver 2. Grab your supplies (bucket, gloves, pick up sticks) 3. Download the Clean Swell app to record the trash you got (or more ways to log the trash on our website) 4. Go outside near your home Instructions to get community volunteer hours verified here: https://www.pacificbeachcoalition.org/student-volunteer-hours/ Thank you for caring! Pacific Beach Coalition

Foster Care Facts Nearly one hundred times a day, a child in California is placed in foster care Too often, however, the children in foster lag behind national standards in relation to the minimal care and protection we strive to achieve for children. As a result, youth in foster care often transition into adulthood without the tools and support they need to thrive. in California, there are over 60,000 children in the foster care system. Many children in California’s foster care system experience frequent placement changes. Children who are in foster care for 24 months MENTORS that are kind, caring, non-judgmental and open to learn can change the trajectory of a kid in foster care. Please reach out to sbrooke@beamentor.org for any questions. • Join Minds Matter Bay Area & become a Mentor or an Instructor for a High Schooler today!

1563 Page StreetSan Francisco, CA 94117
It's Flexible! We'll work with your schedule

To learn more and apply, visit: http://www.mindsmatterbay.org/join/ ABOUT OUR PROGRAM Minds Matter Bay Area is a 100% volunteer-run, educational non-profit that provides low-income students access to strong mentors, instructors and leaders, who help broaden their worldview and prepare them for college and beyond. Students join us as Sophomores, where they build up their academic foundations in math, science, reading, writing and critical thinking, and learn key life skills, like leadership and public speaking. As Juniors, our students focus on improving standardized test scores, managing stress and exploring colleges. During the summers after their sophomore and junior years, we encourage and support our students with finding summer programs at different colleges around the country to push them out of their comfort zones and ready them for college. Finally, as Seniors, our students focus heavily on showcasing their best selves in their college applications and learning more key skills that will ensure that they don’t just graduate from college, but that they thrive during their experience. We also support them with learning about both traditional and creative ways of paying for college, so that finances don't become a barrier to considering a great school. We’re looking for volunteers to help us with every part of this program from tutoring to mentoring to managing programs. At the heart of our organization are people committed to making an impact in education and these students’ lives. At Minds Matter, our mentees come first, but our strong community comes in at a close second. Many of our volunteers form lasting friendships and embark on new endeavors together. Whether we’re discussing the latest trends in education over dinner or picnicking in Golden Gate Park, our community knows how to get things done and have fun while doing it. We invite you to join our community and our cause. VOLUNTEER COMMITMENT The opportunity to make an impact on a student’s life comes with important responsibilities. When working with youth, one of the key components to building trust is just showing up. Commitment is key with our program-your presence, proactive communication, and conscientiousness are what makes Minds Matter Bay Area work. Sessions take place from 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM every Saturday during the school year (August through May, with breaks following standard school holidays) For Sophomores and Juniors, instructional programs take place from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM and mentoring from 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM For Seniors, college application prep takes place from 11:00 AM - 2:00 PM We require a minimum attendance of 80% of Saturday sessions (approx. 20 of 25 weeks from August through May) and advanced notice of planned absences Building strong relationships with a student is vital for their success and growth, so we strongly prefer a three-year commitment, though we require a minimum of one year INSTRUCTORS The instructional component of our programs is designed to equip students with the knowledge and critical thinking skills necessary for achieving academic success at school and in their standardized tests. Our instructors serve as guides and role models for our students, encouraging them to deepen their knowledge base and to enjoy the process of learning. Instructors take on a variety of different roles in our organization: leading a class on a subject area, teaching the SAT/ACT, and developing and delivering workshops on close reading, critical thinking, and statement writing skills for our students and their mentors. We will work with you to find a role that best fits your skills and experience. What we look for: Presentation and facilitation skills appropriate to a small group and/or classroom setting Depth of knowledge and passion for a particular subject Ability to take a complex concept and simplify it, so that anyone can learn it Unfettered curiosity for how things work-especially when it comes to academics and tests Passion for setting goals and gaining concrete results Ability to work in a team and navigate ambiguity Prior experience designing a curriculum and instructional materials is a plus MENTORS Each student is matched with two mentors, who work closely to help their student become well-rounded and navigate the college experience from application to graduation. Mentors work with their students to explore different majors and career paths and learn a variety of skills, like writing resumes and personal statements, managing time and stress, and presenting and discussing a perspective. Our mentors serve as positive role models and catalysts for the students, encouraging them to fulfill their full potential. What we look for: Ability to hold a high bar and set stretch goals that mentees can achieve Knows how to listen and ask the right questions to build trust in a relationship, including creating a safe space for difficult conversations and being available outside of session Inquisitive and curious about what motivates and excites people Adaptable to a wide variety of personality types, from introverts to extroverts; youth to adults Will take initiative, solve problems, be optimistic-but-realistic, collaborative and reliable Prior mentorship experience with low-income high school students is a plus To learn more and apply, visit: http://www.mindsmatterbay.org/join/

Please email f5creeks@gmail.com for information. Tell us something about yourself and what you are looking for. Are you free weekdays or weekends? About how many hours per week or month? Are you looking for something for a group? What area do you live in, and how would you expect to reach sites (e.g. car, bicycle, bus). We might know of opportunities with others closer to you. F5C has several kinds of opportunities in urban nature, along creeks and shorelines and in parks: Individuals or families can "adopt" a small site or project to maintain and beautify, working with guidance but independently, on their own time. This could be as little as a monthly walk to check for specific harmful invasives. A few people can join our "weekday weed warriors," a small group working at varied sites on Tuesday mornings, with no obligation and no RSVP. We have part-time, short-term paid internships for beginning environmental professionals: students close to graduation or recent graduates seeking environmental careers. A small number of high-school juniors or seniors working part-time and short term as interns. These interns should have a demonstrated interest in the environment, be able to work semi-independently, be able to reach our sites on their own (without parents, by foot, bicycle, or transit). They should be significantly helped by the experience, e.g. through income and/or help with college admission or a future job. We are cautiously resuming work parties for fairly small groups, as well as for the general public with signup in advance. Check our web site for what may be scheduled, or email to ask. Anyone can help clean the environment, in your neighborhood or in beautiful natural areas, on your own, with your family, or with friends. The coronavirus crisis has greatly decreased litter -- when this is over, let's keep it this way! You need gloves, bags, a grabber (available at hardware stores), and common sense -- don't pick up anything sharp or disgusting. (The California Coastal Commission's guidelines are at https://www.coastal.ca.gov/publiced/ccd/Guidance.pdf.) Many very young children love picking up trash. Older ones, and adults, can have contests, like who can find the weirdest thing (post on social media?) You also can record your results with the Ocean Conservancy's free Clean Swell app, contributing to knowledge worldwide. Myriad citizen-science projects let you enjoy the outdoors, learn about nature, contribute to knowledge, and help the environment. The free iNaturalist app, from San Francisco's California Academy of Sciences, lets you photograph and report wild plants and animals, and helps you identify them, so you learn while you contribute to knowledge. A kid-friendly companion app, Seek, makes this great for families. Projects that use iNaturalist to contribute to much-needed environmental knowledge include Redwood Watch and the California Pollination Project. Other projects with valuable environmental goals include the Western Monarch Milkweed Mapper, CalDNA (soil samples), the Cattail Monitoring Project (with the US Geological Survey) Green Watch (reporting state of outdoor places and transit), and Sky at Night (measuring light in the night sky, with the National Optical Astronomy Observatory). A good way to find the project that suits you is SciStarter.org. There are thousands: Set it to look for projects in your area, choose a topic from the menu, and look for projects with stable sponsors and clear scientific or environmental goals.
