This year celebrates 53 years since the first Earth Day in 1970. Earth Day is a time to reduce pollution by not using herbicides and pesticides and by not littering. It is a time to remember to improve our soil with mulch and compost, which aids in returning carbon to the earth and reduces water needs, making a difference in reducing the effects of climate change. It is a time to join with others to give back to the environment and sustain our planet. A Bioblitz to encourage the community to engage in observing their environments during Earth Week, a Garden Tour on Earth Day, and various speakers, exhibits, and activities on Earth Day are some of the events to help in planning and publicizing. At PHIG the restoration of an abandoned site into a wildlife habitat garden uses only sustainable practices, including planting of mostly natives and drought tolerant plants. Contact us for exact dates and times to help, including during Earth Week. Please view the web site also at http://phig.webs.comfor more information, directions and a map to the garden.

What to do with yourself?... that makes you feel better and also helps to keep the garden maintained! During the Shelter in Place being in a garden, being outdoors, and especially in a wildlife habitat helps to relieve stress and boredom. At the same time, know you are helping PHIG and your community! We practice social distancing and ask you to stay at home if you are not feeling well. Please bring your own face mask, water, gloves, and if you prefer, hand sanitizer. We do have soap and water on hand for you to feel safe. Our vision is to build PHIG into a community recognized resource with a water conservation demonstration garden. What was a community eyesore is being transformed into a natural and beautiful wildlife habitat that attracts birds, beneficial insects, bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. PHIG provides a living laboratory for all students, of all ages, including students at the Pleasant Hill Education Center and Contra Costa County Master Gardeners PHIG uses no pesticides or herbicides that degrade our air, soil, and water quality PHIG is also simply a place to sit, relax and enjoy nature.

Join fellow gardeners working in the garden, ongoing, usually on Sunday mornings. This water conservation garden demonstrates native plants and uses no herbicides and pesticides to provide wildlife habitat. We always can use an extra pair of hands to help with pruning, chipping, weeding, composting, mulching, raking, and other garden maintenance. We also need someone who can stop by the garden during the week to observe and record both wildlife activity and human activity, taking photographs and keep a log for us, which we’ll use for our web site, blog and Facebook.
