Mission Statement

The mission of the Pleasant Hill Instructional Garden is to educate students, staff, and community members on the need for water conservation and to promote wildlife habitat with a demonstration garden using mulch, drought-tolerant and native plantings and without pesticide use.

Description

Our vision is to build PHIG into a community recognized resource with a water conservation demonstration garden. A community eyesore is being transformed into a natural and beautiful wildlife habitat that attracts birds, beneficial insects, butterflies, and other pollinators.

Begun in 2007, PHIG provides a living laboratory for all students and specifically for students at the Pleasant Hill Education Center and Contra Costa County Master Gardeners. PHIG uses no pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers that degrade our soil, water, and air quality. PHIG is also simply a place to enjoy nature.

Community service and garden work parties help to maintain, renew and develop the garden. Join us in the garden or help us in other ways!

Monika, the coordinator, is super nice and she gives us extra informations about the plants and how to give them the extra care. She's really passionate about helping the environment to stay healthy and the plant to stay healthy and it's endearing to see it. If anyone wants to spare their 2 hours helping the community, this is it!
