Do you want to be a positive influence in bridging communication barriers? Volunteer to lead an English class for seniors living at The Orchards in Oakland! Ideally, we are looking to bring on a volunteer who is fluent in English as well as Mandarin OR Cantonese so they can easily engage and assist our seniors! SAHA serves a very diverse demographic of seniors in the East Bay, a large percentage of which have limited English-speaking proficiency. The volunteer will work with residents who are eagerly seeking accessible English instruction to learn how to communicate in emergencies, converse with doctors and health care providers, and interact with others in everyday conversation. They are enthusiastic and greatly appreciate their ESL instructors. If you're looking to make a difference in your community, this is a wonderful opportunity to gain teaching experience with students who are eager to learn. Schedule: Monday and Wednesday from 9:00am - 11:00am or 12:00pm - 2:00 pm. Requirements: Ongoing SAHA Community Volunteers must commit to volunteer once a week for a minimum of 4 months, and must complete a volunteer orientation, volunteer forms and background screening prior to beginning their placement.
