Become a tutor - Two hours a week is all it takes.

All you need is a caring heart and a desire to empower a child to learn!

Tutors receive all the training, materials, and weekly coaching required to help a second through fifth-grade girl or boy gain the confidence and academic skills needed to be successful in elementary school, middle school, and beyond.

No prior experience is necessary, and we make it easy.

Children Rising programs are structured so that it is easy for you to step in and be effective immediately. And you will work in a team environment supported by Children Rising staff and fellow tutors. The reward of watching a student progress as they reach their potential is priceless!

A few details:

  • We provide tutor training throughout the year. The Children Rising volunteer coordinator will help you register for upcoming training date(s).
  • The schools we support are all in Oakland Unified School District throughout the City of Oakland.
  • We work around your schedule. Tutoring schedules vary and will be based on student and tutor availability during school hours. Volunteers work one to two days per week for two hours per week during the program season.
  • Succeeding by Reading (in-person) and Path2Math (in-person and online) tutoring run throughout the school year, with a one-month break starting in mid-December. Path2Math offers an optional four-week summer session.

Here's what one tutor says:

"Children Rising cares so much about these kids that it invests the time and effort to train the tutors and provide us with tools to do a good job." - Linda Hawkins, Reading Tutor

Because every young child deserves a fair chance to succeed in school...and in life.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to nurture and equip children to rise above the challenges created by generations of poverty, violence and educational inequity.

Description

Children Rising is an Oakland education non-profit founded in 2001. Our Community Engagement Model is poised to make a generational impact in our city. We are educating and energizing the broader community; recruiting, training, and supporting an array of highly skilled and experienced tutors and mentors; developing key strategic partnerships with schools and community partners; and empowering thousands of vulnerable children and youth to rise above the challenges they face. Our vision is for every struggling child to be reached by a caring member of the community at a critical time in their life to nurture hope, the courage to dream, and the opportunity to thrive. We empower children and youth attending public schools most affected by poverty, violence, and educational inequity by raising awareness and rallying community support for their needs; and by galvanizing and guiding volunteers to teach, mentor, and nourish the children so they may develop academic and life skills to realize their God-given potential.
