Since its inception in 1972, members of the Volunteer Auxiliary have donated in excess of one-half million hours of volunteer service to the hospital. Among the current group of volunteers are individuals who have been with the Auxiliary from the start as well as those who have only recently joined the group.
Over the years, through proceeds from the Gift Shop, the Auxiliary has awarded in excess of $400,000 to students pursuing careers in health care. Past scholarship recipients have gone on to become physicians, nurses, allied health professionals and one even became the Chief Nursing Officer of San Leandro Hospital!
CURRENT AVAILABLE POSITIONS
GENERAL DUTY VOLUNTEER
Answer phones and respond to requests for volunteer support. Volunteers may be called on to deliver flowers and gifts for patients, deliver specimens, deliver medical records, deliver for central supply, greet patients and visitors, provide general hospital information, direct patients and visitors to their desired destination, escort visitors to their desired destination, and/or provide wheelchairs to patients in need.
GIFT SHOP VOLUNTEER
Volunteers in the Gift Shop must have good customer service skills, since they handle the hospital’s retail facility. Volunteers working there are responsible for the cash drawer and providing a positive experience for the customer.
STEPS TO BECOME A SAN LEANDRO HOSPITAL VOLUNTEER
Step 1: Before You Apply
Please review the available positions. We only require a 4 hour per week commitment for a minimum of one year. There are morning and afternoon shifts available Monday - Friday.
Step 2: Submit Application (Available at the front information desk)
Volunteer applications can be picked up from the San Leandro Hospital information desk, and can be turned in to the same location.
Step 3: Interview
We will contact you to setup an interview within a week or two.
Step 4: Orientation
If you are accepted into San Leandro Auxiliary, you will be invited to attend an orientation covering both hospital and Volunteer Department policies, procedures, and other important information.
Step 5: Health Screening
After the orientation you will be able to make an appointement with AHS Employee Health. Volunteers are required to provide proof of immunity by immunization record or by titer(s) - blood tests for Measles, Mumps, Rubella and Varicella (chicken-pox). Additionally volunteers are required to show documentation of a tuberculosis skin test (TST) performed elsewhere within the past 12 months and 1 within the past 3 months. AHS Employee Health can provide the second TB test for free.
Step 6: Background Investigation
Volunteers are required to go through a criminal background screening after the Health Screening is completed.
Step 7: Now you can get your badge and start your training!
