Bill Sorro Housing Program (BiSHoP) is seeking to fill our Board. The Board supports BiSHoP by providing mission-based leadership, development assistance and strategic governance over the program. While day to day operations are led by BiSHoP’s Executive Director (ED), the Board ED relationship is a partnership, and the appropriate involvement of the Board is both critical and expected. Desired Qualifications We're looking for individuals from diverse backgrounds who empathize with BiSHoP’s organizational mission and can support our vision as an early-stage non-profit. Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications, skills and experience: Strong diplomatic skills and a natural affinity for cultivating relationships and facilitating and building consensus among diverse individuals. Flexibility, availability and interest in taking a leadership role. Expertise in legal, finance, publicity and marketing, strategic planning, donor cultivation, fundraising and/or event planning, especially within the non-profit sector. Possession of grant writing skills and experience with fundraising campaigns. Ability to act as an ambassador with potential individual, corporate and foundation funders. Ability to identify potential funding sources for capacity building and other program development grants. Ability to provide guidance in efforts to create sustainable donor base. Ability to provide general legal guidance and guidance around organization's governance documents and applicable state nonprofit law. Duties of the Advisory Board The Board shall carry out the purposes of the Corporation and be responsible for the general management of the affairs of the Corporation in accordance with our Bylaws. Specifically, the Board shall: Adopt an annual budget for each fiscal year. Select all officers of the Corporation. Supervise the activities of all officers, agents, and committees of the Corporation in the performance of their assigned duties and investigate any possible conflicts of interest within the Corporation. Adopt and implement policies providing for the hiring, supervision, and evaluation of employees. Provide for the deposit of funds and assure the sound management of the Corporation’s finances. Determine by whom and in what manner deeds, leases, contracts, checks, drafts, endorsements, notes and other instruments shall be signed on behalf of the Corporation. Develop the resources necessary for the operation of the Corporation. Adhere to the Code of Conduct, Powers of the Board, Limitation on the Powers of the Board and other Board policies as outlined in our Bylaws. Participation Expectations Believe in and be an active advocate and ambassador for the values, mission, and vision of the organization. Act in a way that contributes to the effective operation of the Board. Attend at least 80% of Board and committee meetings with communication on planned absences. Be available to serve as a committee or task force chair or member. Actively participate in the planning and implementation of our fundraising and community events. Develop and support BiSHoP’s charitable contributions process and fundraising plan. Keep informed about BiSHoP, its issues, and its connection to the community. Oversee the development, management and reporting of the organization’s budget. Enforce strong internal controls and financial management policies. Respect the authority of the ED and staff. Agree to step down from Board position if unable to fulfill these expectations. All other expectations as outlined in the BiSHoP Board Member Agreement.
