Your language gifts and a caring heart are all it takes! Through supported one-on-one tutoring, you will enable a child to overcome their challenges in school and thrive. Tutors receive all the training, materials, and weekly coaching required to help a second or third-grade girl or boy with reading and math. No prior experience is necessary, and we make it easy. Children Rising programs are structured so that it is easy for you to step in and be effective immediately. And you will work in a team environment supported by Children Rising staff and fellow tutors. The reward of watching a student complete the assignments they struggled with is priceless! A few details: We provide tutor training throughout the entire year. The Children Rising volunteer coordinator will help you register for an upcoming date. The schools we support are in Oakland Unified School District throughout the City of Oakland. We work around your schedule. Tutoring schedules vary and will be based on student and tutor availability during school hours. Here’s what one tutor says: "Marcello has gained more verbal confidence in English and is much more social with the other children. That is sure to carry into his participation in the classroom." - Patrick Reardon, Bilingual Math Tutor Because every young child deserves a fair chance to succeed in school...and in life.

Mission Statement
Our mission is to nurture and equip children to rise above the challenges created by generations of poverty, violence and educational inequity.
Description
Children Rising is an Oakland education non-profit founded in 2001. Our Community Engagement Model is poised to make a generational impact in our city. We are educating and energizing the broader community; recruiting, training, and supporting an array of highly skilled and experienced tutors and mentors; developing key strategic partnerships with schools and community partners; and empowering thousands of vulnerable children and youth to rise above the challenges they face. Our vision is for every struggling child to be reached by a caring member of the community at a critical time in their life to nurture hope, the courage to dream, and the opportunity to thrive. We empower children and youth attending public schools most affected by poverty, violence, and educational inequity by raising awareness and rallying community support for their needs; and by galvanizing and guiding volunteers to teach, mentor, and nourish the children so they may develop academic and life skills to realize their God-given potential.
