The Food Bank provides PAWS clients with a supplemental allotment of pet food, litter and a variety of pet supplies (e.g., toys, treats, collars, leashes, carriers/crates, etc.) every month. This basic but essential service can often mean the difference between our clients meeting their own nutritional needs and sacrificing their needs to feed their animal companions, or being able to keep their pets in their lives at all. Many of our clients are unable to come to the Pet Food Bank due to their disability. We rely on the generosity and commitment of volunteers to deliver food and supplies to all of our homebound clients. Pet Food Bank volunteers are urgently needed during this period of the pandemic to ensure our community members and their pets receive these crucial supplies. That’s where you come in! The area features coastal bluffs with sweeping scenic views. Mussel Rock itself is a rock formation known as stack where a headland is unevenly eroded leaving small islands. It is a popular spot for hang gliders, there are a few walkable paths, though most are steep and can be treacherous. We have part-time, short-term paid internships for beginning environmental professionals: students close to graduation or recent graduates seeking environmental careers. A small number of high-school juniors or seniors working part-time and short term as interns. These interns should have a demonstrated interest in the environment, be able to work semi-independently, be able to reach our sites on their own (without parents, by foot, bicycle, or transit). They should be significantly helped by the experience, e.g. through income and/or help with college admission or a future job. The free iNaturalist app, from San Francisco's California Academy of Sciences, lets you photograph and report wild plants and animals, and helps you identify them, so you learn while you contribute to knowledge. A kid-friendly companion app, Seek, makes this great for families. Projects that use iNaturalist to contribute to much-needed environmental knowledge include Redwood Watch and the California Pollination Project. Other projects with valuable environmental goals include the Western Monarch Milkweed Mapper, CalDNA (soil samples), the Cattail Monitoring Project (with the US Geological Survey) Green Watch (reporting state of outdoor places and transit), and Sky at Night (measuring light in the night sky, with the National Optical Astronomy Observatory). Keep Oakland Beautiful (KOB) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit partner organization that works with the City of Oakland toward supporting a clean, green, and litter free city. Keep Oakland Beautiful is currently recruiting new volunteer Board members to join us. This is the perfect opportunity to get involved and take action in your neighborhood and city! Applications are accepted on a rolling basis - apply now! We are seeking new volunteer Board members who can assist us with one or more tasks such as coordination of (probably socially-distanced) clean-up events; fundraising; grant writing; writing and publishing marketing content and newsletters; website maintenance; Google Drive administration; recruiting volunteers for administrative tasks during uncertain times; and bookkeeping/accounting. If invited to serve on the volunteer Board, you would be expected to contribute 4 to 12 hours per month (level of work intensity varies seasonally) on Board and Committee activities, including fundraising and attending KOB events, for a minimum 2-year commitment. Our Board meets once per month (by video conference until gathering in person is considered safe) and Board committees meet (by phone or video conference) as needed. In exchange, you will earn valuable community organization and non-profit administration experience and will build lasting connections with fellow Oakland residents and City staff.
