  • UX Writing Team Member

If you’re fluent in written English and passionate about eradicating education inequality, keep reading! Oppia is looking for someone to join our UX Writing team to help streamline and improve our written words, content strategy, and information architecture across multiple products. Please fill in this form if you'd like to help out! https://forms.gle/Q8NwkNm8BZNUzwet7 . Note that the form includes a small design challenge as part of the application (see the last question). Who We Are The Oppia Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with the mission to provide high quality education to all. We do this through the creation and maintenance of our free-to-use platform, Oppia (https://www.oppia.org), the coordination of our passionate contributors, and the development of critical partnerships with NGOs in the communities we aim to serve. Even before COVID-19, students around the world were facing difficulties accessing quality education due to conflict, discrimination, lack of teacher training, and more. However, with COVID-19 forcing everyone to stay quarantined in their own homes, students now more than ever need access to free, quality education to ensure that they can continue to learn even if they cannot attend school. Where You Fit In Millions of children are not receiving the education they deserve. Of the 61 million children worldwide who cannot attend primary school, 17 million will never step foot into a school if trends continue. And, unfortunately, even those students who are in school may not receive the effective education they need. On Oppia’s website and Android beta app, our community of volunteers has created a series of mathematics lessons that have proved highly engaging and effective with students, including in a randomized controlled trial. However, we have also identified some areas with the website where new learners get confused, as well as opportunities to improve the user experience on both platforms from an onboarding and navigation perspective. We are in the process of launching an effort to rewrite and streamline the learner and teacher user experiences from a writing-first perspective, in order to make it more cogent and unified. This is particularly important for first-time users, or learners with limited exposure to technology-based education. As a UX Writing volunteer, you would be able to help with this initiative! Why Oppia is an Organization You Want to Work With Oppia has served over 2,000,000 users. Oppia focuses on effectiveness, and conducts rigorous user testing and RCTs to validate the lessons we offer. Learners using Oppia’s lessons have seen gains of 50+% from pre-test to post-test. Oppia's contributors actively help to provide students around the world with basic education. Please see https://medium.com/@ebelubhuhiose/86b97283edf4 and https://medium.com/@ojobusayo99/6e783aaddb74 for examples of our current work. Oppia has a community of hundreds of passionate volunteers from across the globe, so our meetings are held online at flexible times. What Our UX Writing Team contributes (but is not limited to) Write clear and concise content across multiple aspects of the product (including, but not limited to, labels and navigational elements, buttons, tutorials, and notifications). Work with other UX writers to maintain and evolve voice and tone for the content style guide, which aims to help students and teachers feel welcome and supported when using Oppia’s platform and lessons. Work from a global-first perspective, collaborating with the translations and partnerships teams to use language that internationalizes well. You'll also get to work with a product team of designers, researchers, product managers, and engineers from all around the world! There will be opportunities to share your work with them, receive feedback, and contribute to the team through mentoring, onboarding or recruiting. If you'd like to help out, please fill in our form: https://forms.gle/Q8NwkNm8BZNUzwet7 . Thanks!

  • Make education accessible. Become a Hindi translator!

If you’re fluent in spoken and written Hindi and passionate about eradicating education inequality, keep reading! Oppia is looking for a translator to assist our team with translating our online story-based lessons from English to Hindi . To get started, please fill in this form: https://forms.gle/HTCWBRixXo9gJj2o7 Who We Are The Oppia Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with the mission to provide high quality education to all. We do this through the creation and maintenance of our free-to-use platform, Oppia (https://www.oppia.org), the coordination of our passionate contributors, and the development of critical partnerships with NGOs in the communities we aim to serve. Where You Fit In Millions of children are not receiving the education they deserve. Of the 61 million children worldwide who cannot attend primary school, 17 million will never step foot into a school if trends continue. Students around the world face difficulties accessing quality education due to conflict, discrimination, and lack of teacher training - and, in the wake of COVID-19, millions more children are also seeing interruptions in their daily lives, stability, and education, which makes it even more difficult for them to get the education they need to succeed. Our community of volunteers has created a series of novel and engaging story-based mathematics lessons that have proved highly engaging and effective with English-speaking students, including in a randomized controlled trial. We now want to expand the reach of these lessons by translating them into Hindi , in order to make them as accessible as possible to learners who have Hindi as a native language. This language is a particular focus for Oppia because we already have evidence that students who speak it would like to use our lessons, but have difficulty doing so because of the lack of translations. We are therefore seeking fluent or native-level speakers of Hindi to help with translating the lessons. Why Oppia is an Organization You Want to Work With Oppia has served over 2,000,000 users. To get started, please fill in this form: https://forms.gle/3pnmkoP6okWrAJQX9 Who We Are The Oppia Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with the mission to provide high quality education to all. In the wake of COVID-19, millions more children are also seeing interruptions in their daily lives, stability, and education - making it even more difficult than before for many students to get the education they need to succeed. The learners we serve are typically from low-income families which cannot afford to pay for education; in some cases, the parents may not even have had the opportunity to attend school. Thus, to maintain and improve the services that we offer them, it is important to source donations that allow us to cover their costs. Our opt-in email newsletter gives our supporters a way to follow along with our work and receive updates on the impact of their donations. We are currently seeking strong email marketing copywriters who can help produce and edit content for our email newsletter. You should be someone who is familiar with blogging/article writing, email newsletter strategy, passionate about the problems that Oppia is solving, and excited about community engagement! • US TEEN penpals needed for Kenyan teens!!

Marafiki Penpal Program - SO IMPORTANT!! Marifiki means "friend" in Swahili. In 2020, NTS launched our penpal program to match our Kenyan students with U.S. high school students. Everyone exchanges letters each month. It's hard to believe in this hyper-connected world but for the NTS students, this is their first contact with a peer outside of Kenya! It’s also a chance to practice both written and spoken English, and to learn about another culture. We are expanding the program and seek 10 new penpals from the United States who will begin NOW. You must commit to a minimum of a year and a half, writing monthly. Every month, your penpal will send you a letter and then you will write back. Each letter is guided by an NTS staff member, so you'll have plenty of support. Students already in the program have been writing for nearly 2 years, watching their Kenyan penpals grow as their English skills improve. Who We Are NTS a not-for-profit 3-year vocational school located in the Nyamboyo Village in southwestern Kenya. We provide professional, technical education to the economically disadvantaged teens and young adults of the community. Our students are ages 14-20 and all have family histories of poverty, lack of education and job opportunities, and chronic food insecurity. At NTS, they receive professional vocational training, 3 meals a day to combat hunger and malnutrition, English-language classes, computer training, and daily COVID-safe sports activities. Additional one-time volunteers will be matched with a Lead Produce Rescue Driver to help with pick-up and delivery to nearby food agencies. We currently pick up at the following Farmers Markets through October: Brookside, Overland Park City Market, Lenexa, Parkville, Lee's Summit, and Unity Village. If you have a vehicle that can haul produce, and you have a heart to help those in need...ATH can sure use your help! Pick up donated produce every week or periodically from farms, markets and distributors. Bring the kids and make the experience come full circle by delivering to food banks, pantries, shelters and community kitchens in the Greater Kansas City area. Other opportunities: Your organization/group wants to glean? Reserve your date now. You want to lead a gleaning? We always need field supervisors. You want us to come speak to your organization? We’d love to meet you! After the Harvest has a very small staff, so we only succeed because of volunteers like you! Thanks so much for helping rescue fresh, nutritious produce to feed those in need.

Our Veteran Volunteers visit terminally ill veterans; drive and/or accompany a veteran to appointments, shopping and other events; help a veteran apply for benefits or learn about available assistance; help replace lost or stolen military medals by contacting appropriate agencies; listen to life stories or record or videotape a veteran’s reminiscences; telephone veterans to ask how they are doing; attend or help plan activities celebrating Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day; educate veteran’s groups about hospice services by speaking at their meetings. Volunteer orientation teaches the skills required to be a hospice volunteer. VITAS Veteran Volunteers are further trained to meet specific end-of-life needs of veterans to improve their quality of life. Time and dates are ongoing and flexible. Orientation and training to be a VITAS Veteran Volunteer is free. Veterans enjoy receiving visitors-people who will listen to their fading memories and reminiscences. Some veterans need transportation to appointments, shopping and other events. Others need help applying for benefits or researching other kinds of assistance. VITAS Veteran Volunteers learn to help. Show a veteran that he or she is not forgotten. For more information about VITAS visit VITAS.com.

    PetSmart Olathe15255 W 119th StOlathe, KS 66062
It's Flexible! We'll work with your schedule

Heart of America Humane Society hosts a Dog Adoption Event most Saturdays at PetSmart Olathe (119th & Strang Line) from Noon to 3 pm. The event is open to the public during those hours. We have a volunteer van driver (good driving record required) that drives to Kansas City KS Animal Services to transport the dogs from the shelter to PetSmart. While the dogs are being transported, there are volunteers setting up the adoption event at PetSmart, which involves setting up tables, kennels, and supplies used during the event. We would like everyone volunteering for the event to arrive around 11:45 am to assist with unloading the dogs when the van arrives. Then during the event, you will work with a dog. Get to know them, train them on basic commands, spoil them rotten, and talk with prospective adopters about your dog. At the end of the event, those dogs that were not adopted are transported back to the shelter and we ask that the volunteers assist in taking down the tables, kennels, etc. The first Saturday that you volunteer we ask that you come 30-45 minutes early to fill out paperwork and have a short training/orientation. We look forward to hearing from you. We welcome everyone, but if you are under 18 you must be accompanied by a parent.
