Heart of America Humane Society hosts a Cat Adoption Event most Saturdays at PetSmart Overland Park (115th & Metcalf) from noon to 3 pm. The event is open to the public during those hours. We need volunteers to show up before noon to set up the event. This involves setting up tables and cages so that everything is ready when the cats arrive for the event. At the end of the event, we also need assistance in taking everything down (tables, cages, etc). When you volunteer as a Kitty Angel or TLC volunteer, you will spend your time caring for our cats and kittens during their stay at PetSmart Overland Park's (115th & Metcalf) Kitty Hotel as they wait for their forever home. There are 2 shifts daily for our volunteers to fill, with opportunities to help with auxiliary work, such as laundry and organization. TLC volunteers are responsible for helping socialize the kitties by playing with them outside of their kennel, petting them, brushing them, general pampering and morning feeding if requested by their foster parent. The TLC shifts are the AM shifts. Pet Angel volunteers during the PM shift primarily clean and tidy the cat condos, change their litter in their litter boxes, freshen their dry food and water, give canned food, and communicate any needs to respective foster parents. Pet Angel and TLC volunteers are critical members of Heart of America Humane Society, and can have significant impact on kitties adjusting to a new life. Heart of America Humane Society hosts a Dog Adoption Event most Saturdays at PetSmart Olathe (119th & Strang Line) from Noon to 3 pm. The event is open to the public during those hours. We have a volunteer van driver (good driving record required) that drives to Kansas City KS Animal Services to transport the dogs from the shelter to PetSmart. While the dogs are being transported, there are volunteers setting up the adoption event at PetSmart, which involves setting up tables, kennels, and supplies used during the event. We would like everyone volunteering for the event to arrive around 11:45 am to assist with unloading the dogs when the van arrives. Then during the event, you will work with a dog. Get to know them, train them on basic commands, spoil them rotten, and talk with prospective adopters about your dog. At the end of the event, those dogs that were not adopted are transported back to the shelter and we ask that the volunteers assist in taking down the tables, kennels, etc. The first Saturday that you volunteer we ask that you come 30-45 minutes early to fill out paperwork and have a short training/orientation. We look forward to hearing from you. We welcome everyone, but if you are under 18 you must be accompanied by a parent. An animal control officer from Lee's Summit Animal shelter transports the dogs from the shelter to PetSmart. While the dogs are being transported, there are volunteers setting up the adoption event at PetSmart, which involves setting up tables, kennels, and supplies used during the event.
