Read with a student once, twice or four times a month. You donate half an hour a week - no evenings or weekends! Apply online, complete a short online training session, and get paired with a student. Not sure you can make a weekly commitment? Sign up with a partner to share the volunteer experience, or become a "Flexible Reading Mentor" and attend a couple sessions each month.

Lead to Read KC is dedicated to improving the basic literacy skills of children in high need schools. Launched in 2011, we connect nearly 1,200 elementary students with adult reading mentors in more than 50 classrooms across the metropolitan area each week. Learn more at leadtoreadkc.org.

About Lead to Read KC

Location:

Kansas City Metro Area, Kansas City, MO 64108, US

Mission Statement

Creating a community of readers, one lunch hour at a time since 2011.

Description

Lead to Read KC is a Kansas City nonprofit dedicated to supporting the social, emotional and reading skills that are foundational for student success by advancing our literacy platform and mobilizing community volunteers. Why? Only 21% of third graders in Kansas City public and charter schools are reading on grade level. (Source: SchoolSmartKC) Reading is essential - not just for success in school, but for life. When children have trouble learning to read, it can kick off a devastating downward spiral. Poor reading skills make it hard to keep up in other subject areas. Struggling readers are more likely to report feeling lonely, angry, anxious and depressed. And, they're more likely to have behavior problems, end up in the juvenile justice system and drop out of school. Launched in 2011, Lead to Read KC has grown into Kansas City’s largest literacy volunteer corps, connecting more than 1,300 elementary students with adult Reading Mentors across the metropolitan area each week.
