  • Career Mentors - Chicagoland

Career mentors are staff members that provide individualized services to participants. Some service providers refer to these staff as career coaches, case managers, or youth development specialists. The Partnership uses the term "career mentor" to recognize the unique relationship that effective staff members develop with young adults. Providing Opportunity Youth with quality career exploration, training and internship services is much more impactful when coupled with one-on-one support and mentoring. Staff are often required to provide young participants with guidance, motivation and a positive example, as they assist them in pursuing employment and training goals. They serve as mentors, even when not specifically identified as such. Career mentors should have at least 3 years of related work experience. Please note that some referral sources, such as juvenile justice agencies or schools, may require that staff complete a criminal background check and meet specific qualifications prior to working with youth. The Partnership also encourages service providers to connect youth to volunteer mentors, from the partner businesses and/or community. Click on the Mentor button on our webpage. https://awofinc.wixsite.com/awofinc/inner-journey This is a remote/virtual position however, the preferred candidate will live/work in the United States.

  • UX Writing Team Member

If you’re fluent in written English and passionate about eradicating education inequality, keep reading! Oppia is looking for someone to join our UX Writing team to help streamline and improve our written words, content strategy, and information architecture across multiple products. Please fill in this form if you'd like to help out! https://forms.gle/Q8NwkNm8BZNUzwet7 . Note that the form includes a small design challenge as part of the application (see the last question). Note: To join the team, you will need to have an Android device. Who We Are The Oppia Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with the mission to provide high quality education to all. We do this through the creation and maintenance of our free-to-use platform, Oppia (https://www.oppia.org), the coordination of our passionate contributors, and the development of critical partnerships with NGOs in the communities we aim to serve. Even before COVID-19, students around the world were facing difficulties accessing quality education due to conflict, discrimination, lack of teacher training, and more. However, with COVID-19 forcing everyone to stay quarantined in their own homes, students now more than ever need access to free, quality education to ensure that they can continue to learn even if they cannot attend school. Where You Fit In Millions of children are not receiving the education they deserve. Of the 61 million children worldwide who cannot attend primary school, 17 million will never step foot into a school if trends continue. And, unfortunately, even those students who are in school may not receive the effective education they need. On Oppia’s website and Android beta app, our community of volunteers has created a series of mathematics lessons that have proved highly engaging and effective with students, including in a randomized controlled trial. However, we have also identified some areas with the website where new learners get confused, as well as opportunities to improve the user experience on both platforms from an onboarding and navigation perspective. We are in the process of launching an effort to rewrite and streamline the learner and teacher user experiences from a writing-first perspective, in order to make it more cogent and unified. This is particularly important for first-time users, or learners with limited exposure to technology-based education. As a UX Writing volunteer, you would be able to help with this initiative! Why Oppia is an Organization You Want to Work With Oppia has served over 2,000,000 users. Oppia focuses on effectiveness, and conducts rigorous user testing and RCTs to validate the lessons we offer. Learners using Oppia’s lessons have seen gains of 50+% from pre-test to post-test. Oppia's contributors actively help to provide students around the world with basic education. Please see https://medium.com/@ebelubhuhiose/86b97283edf4 and https://medium.com/@ojobusayo99/6e783aaddb74 for examples of our current work. Oppia has a community of hundreds of passionate volunteers from across the globe, so our meetings are held online at flexible times. What Our UX Writing Team contributes (but is not limited to) Write clear and concise content across multiple aspects of the product (including, but not limited to, labels and navigational elements, buttons, tutorials, and notifications). Work with other UX writers to maintain and evolve voice and tone for the content style guide, which aims to help students and teachers feel welcome and supported when using Oppia’s platform and lessons. Work from a global-first perspective, collaborating with the translations and partnerships teams to use language that internationalizes well. You'll also get to work with a product team of designers, researchers, product managers, and engineers from all around the world! There will be opportunities to share your work with them, receive feedback, and contribute to the team through mentoring, onboarding or recruiting. If you'd like to help out, please fill in our form: https://forms.gle/Q8NwkNm8BZNUzwet7 . Thanks!

  • Make education accessible. Become a Hindi translator!

If you’re fluent in spoken and written Hindi and passionate about eradicating education inequality, keep reading! Oppia is looking for a translator to assist our team with translating our online story-based lessons from English to Hindi . To get started, please fill in this form: https://forms.gle/HTCWBRixXo9gJj2o7 Who We Are The Oppia Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with the mission to provide high quality education to all. We do this through the creation and maintenance of our free-to-use platform, Oppia (https://www.oppia.org), the coordination of our passionate contributors, and the development of critical partnerships with NGOs in the communities we aim to serve. Where You Fit In Millions of children are not receiving the education they deserve. Of the 61 million children worldwide who cannot attend primary school, 17 million will never step foot into a school if trends continue. Students around the world face difficulties accessing quality education due to conflict, discrimination, and lack of teacher training - and, in the wake of COVID-19, millions more children are also seeing interruptions in their daily lives, stability, and education, which makes it even more difficult for them to get the education they need to succeed. Our community of volunteers has created a series of novel and engaging story-based mathematics lessons that have proved highly engaging and effective with English-speaking students, including in a randomized controlled trial. We now want to expand the reach of these lessons by translating them into Hindi , in order to make them as accessible as possible to learners who have Hindi as a native language. This language is a particular focus for Oppia because we already have evidence that students who speak it would like to use our lessons, but have difficulty doing so because of the lack of translations. We are therefore seeking fluent or native-level speakers of Hindi to help with translating the lessons. What Our Translation Team Contributes Adding written translations of lessons to other languages. Advising on any barriers that students from different cultures might encounter when understanding and relating to the stories we have written to motivate the lessons. If you’re a copywriter with experience in email marketing and a passion for helping underserved children gain access to education, keep reading! Oppia is looking for passionate individuals to join our Email Newsletter team to help create and publish our regular newsletter. This will enable us to provide updates to our supporters and raise awareness of the work we’re doing, as well as bring in donations that would help ensure the financial sustainability of the organization and enable Oppia to continue providing free educational services for underserved learners around the world who are unable to afford them. To get started, please fill in this form: https://forms.gle/3pnmkoP6okWrAJQX9 Who We Are The Oppia Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with the mission to provide high quality education to all. In the wake of COVID-19, millions more children are also seeing interruptions in their daily lives, stability, and education - making it even more difficult than before for many students to get the education they need to succeed. The learners we serve are typically from low-income families which cannot afford to pay for education; in some cases, the parents may not even have had the opportunity to attend school. Thus, to maintain and improve the services that we offer them, it is important to source donations that allow us to cover their costs. Our opt-in email newsletter gives our supporters a way to follow along with our work and receive updates on the impact of their donations. We are currently seeking strong email marketing copywriters who can help produce and edit content for our email newsletter. You should be someone who is familiar with blogging/article writing, email newsletter strategy, passionate about the problems that Oppia is solving, and excited about community engagement! While we’d prefer someone who has some experience in these areas, we're happy to work with someone who'd like to learn and develop through this role as well. Marafiki Penpal Program - SO IMPORTANT!! Marifiki means "friend" in Swahili. In 2020, NTS launched our penpal program to match our Kenyan students with U.S. high school students. Everyone exchanges letters each month. It's hard to believe in this hyper-connected world but for the NTS students, this is their first contact with a peer outside of Kenya! You must commit to a minimum of a year and a half, writing monthly. Every month, your penpal will send you a letter and then you will write back. Each letter is guided by an NTS staff member, so you'll have plenty of support. Students already in the program have been writing for nearly 2 years, watching their Kenyan penpals grow as their English skills improve. Who We Are NTS a not-for-profit 3-year vocational school located in the Nyamboyo Village in southwestern Kenya. • Make A Connection - Change A Life!

Malden and Surrounding CommunitiesMalden, MA 02148
It's Flexible! We'll work with your schedule

Not only has the COVID-19 coronavirus placed older adults and adults living with disabilities at very high risk of serious illness or death, but it has also made them more susceptible to social isolation and loneliness. Many older adults already live with a deep sense of disconnection from their community, but the pandemic and related social distancing measures have made their sense of social isolation much worse. The Social Engagement Program at Mystic Valley Elder Services is designed to help improve the health and well-being of isolated older adults in the community by providing a meaningful social connection-whether it be through telephone calls, email messages, or regular visits. We are looking for local volunteers. See more detailed information about the program. Our agency serves a diverse population, and this program will be no exception. It is our mission to recruit a diverse cohort of volunteers, and we encourage bilingual volunteers to ensure that all of our consumers feel heard! In addition to speaking their native language, cultural connections can also help build an even stronger connection. More about the Social Engagement Program at MVES! There are three different options for program participants. Volunteers may choose one that is best for them, or could be involved in two, or all three! Volunteers in all parts of this program will receive training and ongoing support. Considering that the goal of this program is to offer meaningful connections, we do ask that volunteers commit to a minimum of 1 year of service. Our expectation is that everyone would begin by being matched with just one person, however, if you are interested, we could potentially match with you up to 5 individuals looking for someone to connect with! The Social Engagement Program includes the following services: Telephone Reassurance Volunteers call an isolated individual, offering a social contact and friendly conversation. This program asks for a commitment of approximately 2-4 hours per week. Email Pen Pal Program Volunteers provide a regular social and supportive email communication. This program requires a commitment of approximately 1-2 hours per week. Friendly Visitor Program Volunteers provide home visits that focus on in-person socialization and companionship. This aspect of the program will only be done when it is safe to do so, and will ask for a commitment of approximately 1-2 hours per week.

  • Public Benefits Internship at CONNECT!

    Chelsea, MA 02150
It's Flexible! We'll work with your schedule

CONNECT Intake & Public Benefits Internship The Neighborhood Developers, Inc. (TND) creates vibrant neighborhoods where people from all walks of life can thrive. Focused in Chelsea and Revere, TND has crafted a remarkable track record of success through investments that are conceived, designed, and fostered by neighborhood residents, municipal partners, and many stakeholders. TND brings its core strengths -- building homes, engaging neighbors, and fostering economic mobility -- to community partnerships that create thriving families and strong neighborhoods. TND created and supports the CONNECT Financial Opportunity Center that co-locates and integrates the services of five agencies working together to improve the financial mobility of 4,000 clients annually. Based at the CONNECT office in Chelsea, the Intake & Public Benefits intern will work one-on-one to help families apply for SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly called food stamps) and make referrals to the WIC program. These public benefits have proven anti-poverty impacts for low income families and provide an important safety net. Each of these public benefits provides clients with a significant increase to their monthly income, but many of CONNECT’s clients are missing out on accessing these benefits due to systemic barriers in the application process, stigma associated with participation in government programs, or lack of awareness of eligibility. The Public Benefits intern will help eliminate barriers to financial stability among CONNECT’s low-income constituency through providing application assistance and case management support throughout the entire application process. The intern will help families to submit applications for benefits, collect required documentation, and navigate the complicated application process. Additional responsibilities include participating in weekly financial capabilities services staff meetings, providing an orientation of other services to clients, completing intake forms, calling the DTA and other customer assistance lines to help resolve client cases, and creating referrals to other services. Other tasks and activities may be added, based on the intern’s interests and organizational need. This position is 80% in person with 2 day work from home. Strong/proficient computer skills are required. This position is a good match for you if you like working directly with families, are bilingual (must be able to speak Spanish), have a high attention to detail, and can advocate for others. You’ll find that no two cases are the same, so this position requires creativity and flexibility in figuring out how to best help each client. The position also requires a high level of responsibility and ability to work independently. We are looking to fill multiple unpaid intern positions and will fill the positions on a rolling basis. The ideal candidate can commit to a minimum of 5/10 hours a week in the fall or 2 semesters. This position is only for Interns seeking course credit as part of their academic program. The schedule is flexible, and will be determined based on your availability and program need. This internship does not pay a stipend. To apply, please send a resume and a single paragraph describing why you are interested in the internship to Ruby Savinon, Program Manager: Rsavinon@tndinc.org. Serious inquiries only please. For more information about other ways to volunteer or get involved with Connect, please contact Program Director Alexa Shabecoff at (617) 545-8348 or by emailing Ashabecoff@tndinc.org

    Brookline, MA 02446
It's Flexible! We'll work with your schedule

The Home Delivered Meals Program provides older adults with a nutritious lunch delivered to their door up to 5 days per week. It is an essential tool to prevent food insecurity, malnutrition, and social isolation when mobility challenges, illness, or disability make it difficult to grocery shop and prepare food. During the recent COVID pandemic, Springwell went from delivering 250,000 meals to 350,000 annually. Even with the end of pandemic restrictions, we continue to serve the same number of meals in response to the challenges of living on a fixed income in a period of inflation and the loneliness crisis. With the ongoing shifts in the economy and the job market, we have been unable to hire enough full-time drivers to deliver all these meals. Volunteers have generously responded to our recruiting efforts for drivers enabling us to deliver each meal in a timely manner Monday through Friday. We always need more drivers. Please volunteer to join us for a shift or two each week if the following qualifications make this opportunity a good fit for you: Must have a reliable car, a current driver’s license, and a clean driving record; Must be able to lift 25 pounds; and Must meet the regulatory pre-requisites for the position. Springwell will train volunteers and provide ongoing support to make sure each volunteer has the resources needed to deliver meals to older adults relying on this service. Please contact us! 555 Amory StreetJamaica Plain, MA 02130
It's Flexible! We'll work with your schedule

Contribute 2-3 hours per month - at a time that works best for YOU to help a low-income elder continue to live independently at home. This is a wonderful and very powerful volunteer-based program for vulnerable, low-income elders in the community whose mental or physical condition makes it difficult to carry out the routine task of money management. The mission of the program is to promote the dignity and autonomy of elders who do not have family or friends nearby who they can rely on. Volunteer bill payers have helped prevent evictions due to: non-payment of rent, loss of utility and phone service, premature placement of elders in nursing homes Financial expertise is NOT required To learn more about this opportunity to make an immediate and dramatic difference in the life of an elder, please contact Chelsea at Ethos -CFIGUEROA@ethocare.org or 617-477-6622. In response to COVID-19, Ethos adheres to CDC social distancing guidelines. • Create Housewarming Baskets for Newly Housed People! - Virtual Opportunity

At your work, school or even homeBoston, MA 02110
It's Flexible! We'll work with your schedule

Just imagine if you didn’t have a safe place to call home. You can help our vulnerable neighbors move out of crowded shelters and unsafe outdoor spaces into safe, stable housing and live hopeful, peaceful futures in our community. In fact, Friends of Boston's Homeless has been helping over 30 people each month move into a stable home of their own. They all need a little help getting set up in their new apartments. The Housewarming Baskets you make help people who struggle on our streets and in crowded shelters feel that same happiness and sense of security as they move into their new place and get started in their new futures in our community by providing some of the essential items we all need when we move into a home of our own. By assembling and donating Housewarming Baskets, you'll be an important part of welcoming people into their new homes where they'll finally find the stability and serenity we all need. This is a meaningful and fun opportunity you can do on your own or with friends and family, co-workers and colleagues. It’s as simple as assembling new (not used) items like cleaning supplies, dish soap, laundry detergent, toilet paper, a set of sheets or towels, in a basket to be given as a housewarming gift to someone about to move into a place of their own - many for the first time in their lives. And please include a welcome note, they mean a lot to the people who receive them. You can also make this a fun Zoom by getting together with your co-workers, colleagues, friends and/or family and each person makes their own basket. You can create as many baskets as you'd like! You can drop off 24/7 at the Woods Mullen Women's Shelter, 794 Albany Street, right in the South End. You can also box them up and mail them, or place orders online, and have them sent to Attn: Dwayne Brown, Southampton Shelter, 112 Southampton Street, Boston, MA 02118. PLEASE DO NOT DROP OFF AT 12 WISE STREET. Keep our community housing programs residents healthy, we continue working remotely and there is no place to leave packages if we aren't there. Thank you! We expect to help at least 550 more people move beyond homelessness into homes of their own this year and they'll all need a little help getting started. The baskets you make will be a big part of this! No matter what you choose, your gifts will transform someone's new apartment into a warm, welcoming home. To get started, just download this flyer and share with everyone you'd like to participate: https://fobh.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Housewarming-Baskets-Flyer-2023.pdf

    55 Roxbury Streetsuite 190445Roxbury, MA 02119
    Thu, March 21, 2024 - Wed, June 19, 2024

In simplest terms, neighborhood beautification means making a neighborhood look and feel better. While the residents of some neighborhoods may be concerned with forcing their ideas of beauty and acceptability on others, most simply want their neighborhoods to be livable and pleasant. Neighborhood beautification, if it’s approached with the right attitude, can lead to more interaction among neighbors from diverse backgrounds, more neighborhood life, and a neighborhood look and feel that attracts new residents and businesses and supports both economic development and a sense of community. A neighborhood beautification program isn’t a single event ("Fix Up Your Street"), but rather a strategy to maintain, enhance, and/or change the character of your neighborhood over the long term. You may approach particular elements of our program one at a time, but your focus should be on your long-term vision for the neighborhood. Visit Nubian Square Neighborhood beautification program will can help attract new business. 1) Neighborhood businesses are important for many reasons: they provide convenient local shopping and services, they can offer jobs to neighborhood residents, and they can keep the neighborhood alive, contributing to Roxbury street life and economic development. Most business would prefer to move to areas that are attractive and where residents and other businesses take care of their properties. Well-kept neighborhoods with regular street traffic increases business. Visit Nubian Square Neighborhood beautification program can attract entertainment and culture. 2) As with businesses in general, a neighborhood beautification effort can attract attention from the entertainment industry as well: a theater company, a museum, a movie theater, etc.. Cultural attractions provide residents opportunities for recreation and culture, and can only help improve the quality of life. Visit Nubian Square Neighborhood beautification program can serve as the base for neighborhood revitalization. 3) Because a neighborhood beautification program will help to attract new residents, businesses, and cultural institutions, it can help turn a dull, mediocre neighborhoods into a vibrant, excellent one. It often takes only a small step or two to start a turnaround - a new restaurant, an art gallery, or an experimental theater may signal to the community that the neighborhood is on the upswing. Since 2007, Children Across America and our volunteers have been dedicated to providing a safe and secure learning environment for all the children we serve. That commitment has led us to the incredibly difficult choice to cancel our 2020 live fundraising event calendar, due to COVID-19. Despite this global setback, we will continue to offer our free programs to the children in our community. At our core, reading comprehension and technology competencies are the focus of our programs. Donations from these fundraising events provide the supplies our children need to succeed. Children Across America is currently seeking someone to create videos and edit a finished product that we can post on our website and social media. These videos will document and advertise our free educational and preventative health programs for under served children in the Blackstone Valley and Metro West area of Massachusetts. Our programs are open to all children 4-9 but the bulk of our kids are 4 and 5. Anyone who comes in contact with our children will need to complete a CORI check, no exceptions. Children Across America, a humanitarian organization, provides literacy and STEM programs for America's children with a focus on under-served children. Our vision is to empower families and children in low-income communities. Its unique programs are focused on improving children’s literacy and STEM skills and drive educational excellence while maintaining a healthy lifestyle. We are a 501C3 non profit corporation registered in the State of Massachusetts. Our organization partners with local healthcare advocates, pediatricians, hospitals, libraries and school systems to ensure children get the full benefit of its programs. If you have a passion to help Americas children succeed, be healthy and excel in their educational development, come help us grow! Please contact us if you are interested in this opportunity.
