Friendly Visitor Program

NOTE: Currently, the Friendly Visitor program is a virtual volunteer opportunity, however volunteers must reside in the Boston-Metro/Eastern Massachusetts area.

The Friendly Visitor Program matches volunteers with frail and isolated elders. Through one-on-one virtual visits or calls the program offers companionship, helps alleviate loneliness, promotes aging with dignity.

Volunteers "visit" their elder friend every week for about an hour. Friendly Visitor activities may include: sharing memories, helping with errands, sharing a holiday, keeping company with an elder or taking a walk. The time and day you meet with your elder is flexible and up to you and the elder to decide. All volunteers receive training and ongoing support (provided virtually) from the JF&CS Friendly Visitor Program Manager.

Volunteer Requirements

  • Commit to volunteering for approximately one year
  • At least 18 years old

  • Attend required orientation/ interview 1-hour virtual 1:1 training

About Jewish Family & Children's Service

1430 Main Street, Waltham, MA 02451, US

Mission Statement

Jewish Family & Children's Service (JF&CS) cares for individuals and families by providing exceptional human service and health care programs, guided by Jewish traditions of social responsibility, compassion, and respect for all members of the community.

For almost 150 years, Jewish Family & Children's Service has been the safety net for over 30,000 individuals and families in 80 Greater Boston communities. Since its inception, the focus of JF&CS has been to support our friends and neighbors through difficult life transitions and times of personal crisis, offering programs and services for every stage of life.

JF&CS is especially responsive to the needs of vulnerable members of our community: newborns and their parents, individuals with development disabilities or persistent mental illness, families at risk and the frail elderly. What makes our continuum of programs unique is our steadfast dedication to caring not only for the physical and economic health of individuals and families, but also for their emotional and spiritual well-being.

JF&CS is always ready to respond, no matter how difficult the problem and regardless of a person's background or ability to pay.
