  • UX Writing Team Member

If you’re fluent in written English and passionate about eradicating education inequality, keep reading! Oppia is looking for someone to join our UX Writing team to help streamline and improve our written words, content strategy, and information architecture across multiple products. Please fill in this form if you'd like to help out! https://forms.gle/Q8NwkNm8BZNUzwet7 . Note that the form includes a small design challenge as part of the application (see the last question). Note: To join the team, you will need to have an Android device. Who We Are The Oppia Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with the mission to provide high quality education to all. We do this through the creation and maintenance of our free-to-use platform, Oppia (https://www.oppia.org), the coordination of our passionate contributors, and the development of critical partnerships with NGOs in the communities we aim to serve. Even before COVID-19, students around the world were facing difficulties accessing quality education due to conflict, discrimination, lack of teacher training, and more. However, with COVID-19 forcing everyone to stay quarantined in their own homes, students now more than ever need access to free, quality education to ensure that they can continue to learn even if they cannot attend school. Where You Fit In Millions of children are not receiving the education they deserve. Of the 61 million children worldwide who cannot attend primary school, 17 million will never step foot into a school if trends continue. And, unfortunately, even those students who are in school may not receive the effective education they need. On Oppia’s website and Android beta app, our community of volunteers has created a series of mathematics lessons that have proved highly engaging and effective with students, including in a randomized controlled trial. However, we have also identified some areas with the website where new learners get confused, as well as opportunities to improve the user experience on both platforms from an onboarding and navigation perspective. We are in the process of launching an effort to rewrite and streamline the learner and teacher user experiences from a writing-first perspective, in order to make it more cogent and unified. This is particularly important for first-time users, or learners with limited exposure to technology-based education. As a UX Writing volunteer, you would be able to help with this initiative! Why Oppia is an Organization You Want to Work With Oppia has served over 2,000,000 users. Oppia focuses on effectiveness, and conducts rigorous user testing and RCTs to validate the lessons we offer. Learners using Oppia’s lessons have seen gains of 50+% from pre-test to post-test. Oppia's contributors actively help to provide students around the world with basic education. Please see https://medium.com/@ebelubhuhiose/86b97283edf4 and https://medium.com/@ojobusayo99/6e783aaddb74 for examples of our current work. Oppia has a community of hundreds of passionate volunteers from across the globe, so our meetings are held online at flexible times. What Our UX Writing Team contributes (but is not limited to) Write clear and concise content across multiple aspects of the product (including, but not limited to, labels and navigational elements, buttons, tutorials, and notifications). Work with other UX writers to maintain and evolve voice and tone for the content style guide, which aims to help students and teachers feel welcome and supported when using Oppia’s platform and lessons. Work from a global-first perspective, collaborating with the translations and partnerships teams to use language that internationalizes well. You'll also get to work with a product team of designers, researchers, product managers, and engineers from all around the world! There will be opportunities to share your work with them, receive feedback, and contribute to the team through mentoring, onboarding or recruiting. If you'd like to help out, please fill in our form: https://forms.gle/Q8NwkNm8BZNUzwet7 . Thanks!

  • Make education accessible. Become a Hindi translator!

If you’re fluent in spoken and written Hindi and passionate about eradicating education inequality, keep reading! Oppia is looking for a translator to assist our team with translating our online story-based lessons from English to Hindi . To get started, please fill in this form: https://forms.gle/HTCWBRixXo9gJj2o7 Who We Are The Oppia Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with the mission to provide high quality education to all. We do this through the creation and maintenance of our free-to-use platform, Oppia (https://www.oppia.org), the coordination of our passionate contributors, and the development of critical partnerships with NGOs in the communities we aim to serve. Where You Fit In Millions of children are not receiving the education they deserve. Of the 61 million children worldwide who cannot attend primary school, 17 million will never step foot into a school if trends continue. Students around the world face difficulties accessing quality education due to conflict, discrimination, and lack of teacher training - and, in the wake of COVID-19, millions more children are also seeing interruptions in their daily lives, stability, and education, which makes it even more difficult for them to get the education they need to succeed. Our community of volunteers has created a series of novel and engaging story-based mathematics lessons that have proved highly engaging and effective with English-speaking students, including in a randomized controlled trial. We now want to expand the reach of these lessons by translating them into Hindi , in order to make them as accessible as possible to learners who have Hindi as a native language. This language is a particular focus for Oppia because we already have evidence that students who speak it would like to use our lessons, but have difficulty doing so because of the lack of translations. We are therefore seeking fluent or native-level speakers of Hindi to help with translating the lessons. What Our Translation Team Contributes Adding written translations of lessons to other languages. Advising on any barriers that students from different cultures might encounter when understanding and relating to the stories we have written to motivate the lessons. • US TEEN penpals needed for Kenyan teens!!

Marafiki Penpal Program - SO IMPORTANT!! Marifiki means "friend" in Swahili. In 2020, NTS launched our penpal program to match our Kenyan students with U.S. high school students. Everyone exchanges letters each month. It's hard to believe in this hyper-connected world but for the NTS students, this is their first contact with a peer outside of Kenya! It’s also a chance to practice both written and spoken English, and to learn about another culture. We are expanding the program and seek 10 new penpals from the United States who will begin NOW. You must commit to a minimum of a year and a half, writing monthly. Every month, your penpal will send you a letter and then you will write back. Each letter is guided by an NTS staff member, so you'll have plenty of support. Students already in the program have been writing for nearly 2 years, watching their Kenyan penpals grow as their English skills improve. Who We Are NTS a not-for-profit 3-year vocational school located in the Nyamboyo Village in southwestern Kenya. We provide professional, technical education to the economically disadvantaged teens and young adults of the community. Our students are ages 14-20 and all have family histories of poverty, lack of education and job opportunities, and chronic food insecurity. At NTS, they receive professional vocational training, 3 meals a day to combat hunger and malnutrition, English-language classes, computer training, and daily COVID-safe sports activities. Our students thrive professionally, physically, and psychologically.

It's Flexible! We'll work with your schedule

Are you looking for a way to give back to your community? Do you want to work with a young person who needs support, care, and a role model? We need YOU to mentor a youth experiencing foster care. Be A Mentor is partnering with Alameda County Office of Education (ACOE) to support Alameda County youth in foster care. Our mentoring coordinator will be available for support throughout the program. We ask that you commit to at least 2-hours per week for a full calendar year. We provide a direct mentoring service to youth (such as those in foster care; with incarcerated parents; susceptible to gang participation, drug/alcohol abuse or teen parenting; homeless/in transition or academically struggling).

It's Flexible! We'll work with your schedule

Are you looking for a way to give back to your community? Do you want to work with a young person who needs support, care, and a role model? We need YOU to mentor a student experiencing foster care. Be A Mentor is partnering with Alameda County Office of Education (ACOE) to support youth in foster care. Since this program is through ACOE, the youth in the program are from Alameda County; however, are residing in the Modesto/Oakdale area, and need the support of a local mentor who can listen to and spend time with them while they are away from home. This is an in-person mentoring program. You will spend most of your time in the community with your mentee exploring, talking, and learning about their needs. There will be opportunities to connect with other mentors and mentees in the area for support and activities. 1 on 1 mentoring gives students more opportunities for success regardless of their background. It’s especially important for youth who may not have consistent adults in their lives to connect with. All mentors are required to complete a background check and mentor trainings. Our mentoring coordinator will be available for support throughout the program. We ask that you commit to at least 2-hours per week for a full calendar year. Consistency is important to build trust between you and your mentee, especially when youth in foster care have experienced many relationship disruptions.

As a bereavement hospice volunteer, you can provide support to the Bereavement Coordinator within the office by cultivating engaging and thoughtful conversations with families who may have recently lost their loved ones. If you enjoy having compassionate and empathetic conversations, have great time management, and can give at least four hours a week of your beloved time to families, then please reach out to us and join the team! The philosophy of hospice care is to provide comfort and the highest quality of life that one can achieve at the end of life. Through an interdisciplinary team: nurse, nurse assistant, social worker, chaplain, and volunteers, we help the patient and family walk through their journey. Suncrest Hospice is looking for volunteers to join the Suncrest Team as we provide excellent care and support to our hospice patients and their families in their homes! We serve families in Alameda, San Francisco, San Mateo, Contra Costa, Santa Clara and many other Bay Area counties. All of our volunteers are trained to provide companionship, but we are looking for volunteers who are willing to become Bereavement Support to families and the entire Suncrest Community. As volunteers are trained in their role with patients, we are required to conduct background checks, drug testing, and TB testing, at no charge to all volunteers. We are especially looking for volunteers willing to serve patients and families in and around Concord. Please contact the office at 408-900-8838 for more information and other questions pertaining to the organization or this listing.
