Compassionate Heart and Hands

To become a hospice volunteer at Sutter Care at Home the greatest gift you can offer is your time, your caring nature, and your willingness to listen. Volunteering can be as simple as sitting by the bedside, reading a book or running a quick errand for our patients and their family member. Training and ongoing support are provided to all volunteers, so experience is not required.

Being a hospice volunteer is a great opportunity to practice compassion and discover your skills and learn new ones during the end-of-life care. Volunteers are trained to enhance the overall goal of meeting the physical, emotional, spiritual and practical needs of hospice patients and their families.

While volunteer cannot provide clinical or personal care, s/he can be a caring companion and compassionate listener to both patients and families.

We also welcome certified professionals who wish to provide massage/art/music/animal therapy.

Health clearance, vaccinations and a background check are provided through Sutter Health. Our volunteers are required to receive or show verification of an annual flu shot and Tuberculin skin test or blood test, provide immunization records or titers showing immunity to MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) and Varicella, show proof of TDAP (tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis) and COVID-19 vaccinations, complete a drug screen and a health screening, consent to a criminal background check, and submit a copy of current driver’s license and auto insurance. Sutter will provide health screening and any necessary tests or vaccinations. A minimum of 1-2 hours of volunteering per week and a 1-2 year commitment is required. Volunteers work closely with Volunteer Program Coordinator as members of the hospice team
