Description: Democratism is looking for Communications Interns to support a team of activists and volunteers working to end the Electoral College and create fair representation in Congress. Interns will collaborate on messaging strategies and produce written content to propel our mission forward. This role offers a unique opportunity to learn about the federal election system and support Democratism's mission in a creative role. Position Title: Communications Intern Position type: 30-40 hours per week (flexible). 8 weeks, May-July 2024. Start and end dates are flexible. Additional weeks in August may also be possible. This is an unpaid position. All applications eager to gain experience in writing and advocacy, regardless of experience, are highly encouraged to apply. Location: Remote. Responsibilities: Create educational content in support of Democratism’s mission, including video scripts, blog posts, emails, slide decks, and other web content. Draft regular social media and blog content based on current events and various issues that rely on improving our democratic systems, including: gun violence, racial justice, immigration, the climate emergency, voting rights, economic fairness, reproductive rights, LGBTQ issues, and more. Support outreach and advocacy efforts by researching and gathering information to create targeted messaging for diverse audiences Proofread and edit content from team members to ensure accuracy and alignment with Democratism’s mission and values Actively participate in regularly scheduled team meetings and contribute to communications strategy development Complete comprehensive training on Democratism in order to understand its mission and key objectives Requirements: Excellent written and oral communication skills Background/Coursework in Journalism, English, Communications, Political Science or related field. Applicants from all majors/degree programs who have an interest in communications are strongly encouraged to apply. Proven ability to distill complex information into clear and concise original content Comfort using online tools for collaboration, communication, and document creation. Experience with content and creator tools on social media sites, preferably including Facebook, X, Instagram, LinkedIn, and/or Mastodon Strong time management and critical thinking skills You must support our mission to empower the people to shape the future and our goal of establishing popular election of the president and proportional representation in Congress by a vote of the people (learn more at democratism.org).

Democratism seeks a Social Media Contributor to join a team of volunteers producing social media campaigns and posts and participating in social media strategy and management, in support of our democracy mission. Responsibilities: Be ready to develop an understanding of the organization’s objectives and social media goals Propose, prepare, and run campaigns on specific topics related to the organization’s objectives, such as the nature of the organization’s democracy proposal or its connection to other issues important to you personally (such as climate change, racial justice, gun control, reproductive rights, LGBTQ rights, or economic fairness) Sign up for a time during each week to be available to prepare and review social media posts on a variety of relevant topics that are separate from campaigns Follow news and social media on relevant topics Work with other volunteers to review and approve each others’ proposed campaigns and posts Participate in a weekly 40-minute remote social media meeting, including sharing your views and joining in group decision making. There will also be opportunities to be involved in social engagement, analysis, coordination, and strategy. Skills & Experience: Proficiency and experience in at least one of the major social media platforms and readiness to develop proficiency in all three Comfort using and learning online tools for internal communication and work planning People of all backgrounds and identities are strongly encouraged to apply. This role offers a unique opportunity to support Democratism's national mission on a local level and be part of an exciting movement to advance the power of the people to shape the future! Responsibilities: Establish relationships with local policymakers and legislators to educate them about Democratism and its proposed legislation, the Democracy Decree Strategize best practices for local organizing and help strengthen advocacy materials and processes Organize and lead local action campaigns and events such as tabling, campus outreach education, student group creation, and lobbying Research and engage with other local organizations, communicating via email and conducting one-on-one and group meetings with their members to advance local advocacy efforts Prepare for and deliver persuasive presentations and other materials to effectively communicate our organization's mission and goals Actively participate in regularly scheduled team meetings Complete comprehensive training on Democratism in order to understand its mission and key objectives Requirements: Experience or coursework in Communications, Political Science, or Public Policy.
