ORGANIZATION: Democratism

Description: Democratism is looking for Community Outreach and Advocacy Interns to support a team of activists and volunteers working to end the Electoral College and create fair representation in Congress. Interns will lead local outreach in their community and advocate for the adoption of the Democracy Decree in their local city, town, county, or state. This role offers a unique opportunity to support Democratism's national mission on a local level and be part of an exciting movement to advance the power of the people to shape the future!

Position Title: Community Outreach and Advocacy Intern

Position type:

  • 30-40 hours per week, flexible.
  • 8 weeks, May-July 2024. Start and end dates are flexible. Additional weeks in August may also be possible.
  • This is an unpaid position. All applications eager to gain experience in community organizing and advocacy, regardless of experience, are highly encouraged to apply.

Location: Remote. Local organizing may require some in-person meetings and events.

Responsibilities:

  • Establish relationships with local policymakers and legislators to educate them about Democratism and its proposed legislation, the Democracy Decree
  • Strategize best practices for local organizing and help strengthen advocacy materials and processes
  • Organize and lead local action campaigns and events such as tabling, campus outreach education, student group creation, and lobbying
  • Research and engage with other local organizations, communicating via email and conducting one-on-one and group meetings with their members to advance local advocacy efforts
  • Prepare for and deliver persuasive presentations and other materials to effectively communicate our organization's mission and goals
  • Actively participate in regularly scheduled team meetings
  • Complete comprehensive training on Democratism in order to understand its mission and key objectives

Requirements:

  • Experience or coursework in Communications, Political Science, or Public Policy. Applicants from all majors/degree programs who have an interest in advocacy and lobbying are strongly encouraged to apply
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with proficiency in delivering presentations and confidently addressing diverse audiences
  • Previous grassroots campaigning or lobbying experience preferred
  • Strong time management and critical thinking skills
  • Working knowledge of local legislative processes and the federal election system
  • Comfort using online tools for collaboration, communication, and document creation
