Description: Democratism is looking for Communications Interns to support a team of activists and volunteers working to end the Electoral College and create fair representation in Congress. Interns will collaborate on messaging strategies and produce written content to propel our mission forward. This role offers a unique opportunity to learn about the federal election system and support Democratism's mission in a creative role.

Position Title: Communications Intern

Position type:

  • 30-40 hours per week (flexible).
  • 8 weeks, May-July 2024. Start and end dates are flexible. Additional weeks in August may also be possible.
  • This is an unpaid position. All applications eager to gain experience in writing and advocacy, regardless of experience, are highly encouraged to apply.

Location: Remote.

Responsibilities:

  • Create educational content in support of Democratism’s mission, including video scripts, blog posts, emails, slide decks, and other web content.
  • Draft regular social media and blog content based on current events and various issues that rely on improving our democratic systems, including: gun violence, racial justice, immigration, the climate emergency, voting rights, economic fairness, reproductive rights, LGBTQ issues, and more.
  • Support outreach and advocacy efforts by researching and gathering information to create targeted messaging for diverse audiences
  • Proofread and edit content from team members to ensure accuracy and alignment with Democratism’s mission and values
  • Actively participate in regularly scheduled team meetings and contribute to communications strategy development
  • Complete comprehensive training on Democratism in order to understand its mission and key objectives

Requirements:

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Background/Coursework in Journalism, English, Communications, Political Science or related field. Applicants from all majors/degree programs who have an interest in communications are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Proven ability to distill complex information into clear and concise original content
  • Comfort using online tools for collaboration, communication, and document creation.
  • Experience with content and creator tools on social media sites, preferably including Facebook, X, Instagram, LinkedIn, and/or Mastodon
  • Strong time management and critical thinking skills
  • You must support our mission to empower the people to shape the future and our goal of establishing popular election of the president and proportional representation in Congress by a vote of the people (learn more at democratism.org).
