Homeland Hospice is privileged to serve Military Veterans and is associated with the "We Honor Veterans Program." To support our veterans, Homeland understands that we must understand the unique physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual end-of-life challenges that many veterans face. We must understand how to specifically address those challenges to provide quality care and our Veteran volunteers play a key role in Homeland Hospice being able to do that. Homeland Hospice offers several opportunities for Veterans to serve Veterans: * VETERAN COMPANIONSHIP - Veteran volunteers have the unique ability to relate and connect with Veteran patients and their families. Through this companion relationship, patients and volunteers tend to share in the camaraderie of the military experience. *VETERAN APPRECIATION - Homeland Hospice staff also like to show their respect to, and share their thanks with, patient veterans through pinning ceremonies. Veteran volunteers are welcomed and encouraged to be part of these ceremonies as we publicly acknowledge the military service and sacrifices made by the veteran and his/her family. *SITTING WITH VETERAN AT THE END OF LIFE - Come along side a veteran who is actively dying. Volunteers may be by the bedside of a person who would otherwise die alone, or they may be present with family, simply being there when the family needs a break, a hug or someone to talk to. Please contact us if you feel that you are being drawn to serve fellow veterans in any one of these ways. Volunteers can select where they are comfortable serving - near home or work, personal homes or facilities. Thank you for your service and for the freedom and protection that you have provided to us! *The Homeland Hospice office is located in Harrisburg, but serves 14 counties in South Central PA, including - Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Northumberland, Perry, Schuylkill, York. We can "match" you with a veteran in your home or work community. * CDC guidelines are being followed and training is being provided regarding how to conduct safe visits.

We are seeking volunteers to make cards to help transform a patient's day! Words of encouragement and caring thoughts are always appreciated by our Hospice patients and families! Remember the last time you received an unexpected card in the mail? There is something very special about knowing that the writer took the time and care to think of you. Provide that special gift to our patients and let them know that they were thought of and remembered (even by a stranger!)for a moment in your day. Homemade cards, store bought cards with a personal note, or a short letter are all welcome - let your creativity loose! This is a great family or group project and can be done by persons of all ages. To become part of the Care Card Team, contact Ory Bower, Homeland Hospice Volunteer Coordinator, and further instructions and ideas will be provided. *The Homeland Hospice office is located in Harrisburg, but serves 14 counties in South Central PA, including - Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Northumberland, Perry, Schuylkill, York.*

Legacy volunteers offer the opporunity for patients and their families to write their loved one's life story. Through attentive writing, a legacy volunteer details a patient's life story according to their wishes to give the family a memorial document to remember their loved one, celebrate their life, and honor their legacy.

LET YOUR SEWING TALENTS HELP HOSPICE PATIENTS WITH DEMENTIA OR ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE! Seniors with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia can have hands that are restless or fidgety. Have you ever noticed movements such as hand rubbing, twisting fingers, or picking at fabrics? Fidgety hands may be a way of expressing anxiety or frustration. It is important to find safe, hands-on activities to provide comfort and address the tactile stimulation needs. A Fidget Mat is a small blanket or quilt that may be the perfect item to soothe and calm while safely stimulating those busy hands. What is a Fidget Mat? A fidget quilt can also be called activity blankets, fidget mats, or busy quilts. It is a blanket or quilt that is small enough to fit easily on a senior's lap- think over-sized place mat. Sewn onto the fidget quilt are accents with a variety of textures and movable parts, such as zippers, buttons, pockets, key chains, different fabrics and more. *The Homeland Hospice office is located in Harrisburg, but serves 14 counties in South Central PA, including - Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Northumberland, Perry, Schuylkill, York. Long distance support is most certainly welcomed, if blankets can be mailed to the hospice office.*
