Can you imagine being stuck in your home most, if not every day of the week? Many of our homebound clients are isolated and lonely, unable to get out of their homes to maintain important relationships or socialize. Volunteer visitors are a welcome respite and a chance to connect with the world outside their homes. Volunteers are matched with a client for a weekly visit. Matches spend their time talking, playing cards, working on puzzles, taking a walk, crafting or sharing other hobbies and interests. This is an amazing opportunity to get to know a fascinating person who grew up in a different generation. Similar to Companionship volunteers, Respite volunteers provide a regular break for a spouse or family member from their 24/7 caretaking responsibilities. Respite volunteers sit with a loved one and keep him/her company so his/her loved one can go out for errand, grocery shopping or to his/her own medical appointment. Community Caregiver clients live in 7 towns in the Greater Derry, NH area: Derry, Londonderry, Hampstead, Danville, Sandown, and Chester. Volunteers need to reliably travel to the client's home on a regular basis.

Being independent is a matter of pride for many of our elderly and disabled individuals. For some of our clients, the basic need to access food can be difficult. Volunteers assist our elderly clients by transporting them to the store, assisting in the store, if needed, with reading labels, reaching items, or ensuring correct money transactions. In some instances, volunteers shop for a client because he/she is physically unable to shop for themselves. By volunteering a couple of hours a week or a couple of hours per month, you become an integral part in maintaining this elderly person's independence. Our clients live in 7 towns in the Greater Derry, NH area; Derry, Londonderry, Windham, Hampstead, Danville, Sandown, and Chester.

Community Caregivers operates Project Upkeep as a complimentary program to better help our clients maintain their independence in their homes. This program is funded annually by People's United Bank. Volunteers with a range of skills are needed to assist our clients. Sample projects include: weatherizing doors and windows, fixing or installing hand rails, installing proper lighting and fixing leaky faucets. Often times Project Upkeep volunteers are sent out to appraise a project to determine if it can be accomplished by our volunteer team. We need volunteers and tradesman to offer assistance to our elderly and disabled clients. Volunteers will be assigned tasks to improve the safety and livability of their homes. Volunteers and tradesman will be reimbursed for materials by our clients or through the Project Upkeep fund. Interested volunteers also complete fall and spring yard cleanups and dump runs.

The Loaners Closet was started because we saw the need among the low-income individuals we serve for common medical items that they could not afford. And by virtue of the work we do with the elderly and disabled, we were frequently offered used medical equipment by former clients and their families when that equipment was no longer needed. From this simple idea a much needed and much utilized program was born. The Loaners’ Closet celebrated its 17 th Anniversary in 2020. We currently have over 14,000 items available for or out on loan - including walkers, bath seats, wheel chairs, commodes, transfer benches, and many other items . The Loaners’ Closet also served as a free clearing-house for medical consumable items in 2013 (Depends TM, adults diapers, Chux TM under-pads, etc.) and over-sized items (hospital beds, electric wheel chairs, stair lifts, etc.). Last year, The Loaners’ Closet loaned out or gave away 4369 pieces of medical equipment. This is where a volunteer comes in. We need a few gifts volunteers to come in a couple times a month to tune up equipment. Equipment is not made as sturdy these days and the brakes on rollators often need to be tunes, tires need to be changed on wheelchairs and bath seats need their adjustable height legs lubricated. Help us give our equipment another life with your skill and expertise.
