Volunteering at Lehigh Valley Hospice is a rewarding way to enhance the lives of hospice patients and their families. Hospice volunteer are part of a very special team of people who serve patients receiving end-of-life care and their families, working together to preserve dignity and quality of life. We are looking for people just like you! There are many ways you can support our hospice team. Some of the assignments include: Direct patient interaction Provide companionship to the patient Respite for the primary caregivers Writing legacy letters for patient Assist with errands or complete "light" household tasks Vet to Vet support Support our onsite inpatient unit at Lehigh Valley 17 th street location Pet therapy volunteers Bereavement support Making phone calls to check on bereaved families Helping with grief and loss support groups Administrative Clerical help for the Hospice office All volunteers receive specialized training at the end of their onboarding. The courses are through our online portal or taught by hospice personnel. These trainings review the comprehension of hospice and palliative care, patient/family rights, stages of death and dying, spiritual considerations, safety precautions and HIPAA regulations and the roles of our interdisciplinary team

Lehigh Valley Hospice Volunteer Program is "em- barking" on a new program for our patients’ pets. It is called Pet Peace Of Mind which is a national initiative. It is designed to assist patients and families with the care of their beloved pets at a time when they are least able to provide for them. Such duties include fulfilling pet care needs, keeping food supplies in place, waste pick up/litter box cleaning, arranging pets to veterinary appointments, grooming services, temporary boarding in emergency situations, and eventually helping to re-home the pet. Qualifications: Must understand dynamics of pet ownership including basic pet responsibility and health care. A strong background in animal handling (different breeds of dogs and cats) experience is highly desirable. The ideal candidate may be someone who has volunteered at a shelter or worked in the veterinary field. You MUST Complete regular hospice volunteer training as mandated by Medicare. Also must complete all background checks.
