The Advanced Manufacturing Center (AMC) is the Economic and Workforce Development Department's central hub of activity. We offer continuing education classes for students who are seeking short-term training. We offer companies and their employees customized training to strengthen the skills of the workforce. The AMC Assistant volunteer position will support the AMC faculty and staff. The department will provide volunteer training to prepare them to assist the students, staff, and faculty. Volunteer Responsibilities: Staff the Front Desk Assist training participants/students as needed in classes with instructor supervision to complete specific class projects (i.e., during layup, work with GE molds, precision measurement tools, and using ply cutter). Assist office staff with administrative tasks: filing, labeling, scanning, copying, reviewing marketing materials, answering phones, staffing the front desk, cleaning/dusting, etc. Assist with inspection of building, classrooms, labs, shops, exterior areas, and other spaces to ensure industry standards for safety and cleanliness are met. Performs tasks to meet 5S cleaning method that helps the workplace get and stay organized. Requirements: An application, background check and orientation/brief training are required before starting this position. Must be able to commute to A-B Tech in Asheville NC. This position is in-person. Able to work a shifts Monday - Friday from 9 to 5 on scheduled school days. Times will vary in the Summer and the college is closed for school holidays, breaks and between semesters. Must have a social security number, be over the age of 18 and this position is not eligible for community service. Skills Required: Communication - verbal and written Technology - use of computers, email, MS Office Able to support instructors with equipment specific to classes Teamwork Attire: Comfortable and appropriate attire is required. Spread a little love with the Therapy Dog Program at A-B Tech. The College recognizes the positive influence that therapy dogs can have on students and staff. Not to be confused with service dogs, therapy dogs help by visiting and spread kindness and providing comfort. A-B Tech Teams may either have regular routes on campus, visiting public areas, and staff offices or assist with special requests such as visiting classrooms before exams or special events on campus. A-B Tech is grateful for all the Therapy Dog Teams that support the staff and students. We hope if you have a Therapy Dog you will consider adding A-B Tech to your routine. The college requires that all Teams provide copies of their Therapy Dog Certification, and attend a new volunteer orientation session and walk-through of the campus before starting. Volunteering is available Monday - Friday 9 to 5 with some exceptions. All volunteering occurs in/near Asheville NC and a social security number is required during the application process. Volunteer Responsibilities: The owners/handlers will follow all of the rules of their certifying registry. The dog shall be under the direct and continuous supervision and control of the volunteer handler at all times. The Volunteer Coordinator will determine which therapy dogs will be invited to visit the campus. Report all incidents to the A-B Tech Campus Police, Volunteer Coordinator, and the registry, which certifies the dog and handler team. All handlers are required to attend the volunteer orientation and be registered volunteers at A-B Tech. Requirements: An application, background check and orientation/ brief training are required before starting this position. Must be able to commute to A-B Tech in Asheville NC. This position is in-person. Schedules are based on volunteer availability. Times will vary in the Summer and closed for school holidays, breaks and between semesters. Shifts occur Monday - Friday from 9 to 5 on scheduled school days. Must have a social security number, be over the age of 18 and this position is not eligible for community service. Skills Required: Only dogs certified medically fit and are trained and certified by an appropriate accrediting agency shall be allowed to visit students and staff. Their accrediting agency must annually certify all dogs. Dogs must be a minimum of one-year-old to visit. Non-spayed dogs are not allowed to visit when in estrus. All dogs must submit their up-to-date identification card from the certifying registry each year. The dog must be bathed, well-groomed and checked for signs and symptoms of health problems. Attire: Comfortable and appropriate attire is required. Building temperatures are variable and some visits are outside - please dress accordingly. Some walking is involved - comfortable footwear is recommended. Location: Various locations across A-B Tech Campus, 340 Victoria Rd., Asheville NC 28801. May also include the additional A-B Tech Woodfin (Canoe Lane, Woodfin) Campus. The Southern Appalachian Radio Museum, located on the main campus of A-B Tech Community College, traces the history of radio from the early days of spark gap transmitters through the 1960's. Exhibits and artifacts include Atwater Kent, Philco, Silvertone Radios. Volunteer act as museum hosts greeting visitors and answering questions. The museum is an excellent opportunity for volunteers who have an interest and experience in radio (Commercial and Ham Radios) history and electronics. Volunteer are encouraged to visit the museum before deciding to volunteer. More information can be found at https://www.avlradiomuseum.org/. All volunteering occurs in/near Asheville NC and a social security number is required during the application process. Skills Required: Experience in amateur radio or vintage radio restoration or credentials as a professional electronics engineer. Comfortable explaining engineering and radio technology to a variety of ages. This free museum is open Saturdays from 1-3 p.m. Closed the months of November and December. Shifts occur every few Saturdays with a monthly Thursday morning meeting. Attire: Comfortable and appropriate attire is required. Room temperatures are variable - please dress accordingly.
