The Mathematics Department houses courses such as Math Measurements & Literacy, Algebra/Trigonometry, Statistics, Precalculus Algebra/ Trigonometry, Calculus, Linear Algebra and Differential Equation, Quantitative Literacy. Volunteer Opportunity: Volunteers in this position support the Math Department by providing individual tutoring to assigned students that are not able to utilize the Academic Learning Center or require more intensive individual tutoring. Assignments are determined by the Dean of Mathematics. Volunteer Responsibilities: * Provide tutoring to assigned students in mathematics (100 and 200 course series). * Coordinate with the classroom instructor to ensure student needs and goals are being met. * Develop tutoring approaches to the needs of individual students. * Providing support to students without doing the work for the student. * Training (by supervisor) and Tutoring (of students) will take place on the campus of A-B Tech Community College or via a virtual program. Requirements: * An application, background check and orientation/brief training are required before starting this position. * Must be able to commute to A-B Tech in Asheville NC. This position is in-person. * Must have a social security number, be over the age of 18. This position is not eligible for community service. Skills Required: * Proficient in College level Mathematics. Course material is equivalent to 1st and 2nd year University Math classes. * Prior experience in Math tutoring or professional use preferred. * Patience and kindness. * Able to accept direction and suggestions from the classroom instructor. * Accepting each student and encouraging the best from them and comfortable working with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Specific Competencies: * At least a Bachelors in related Math field or relative work/professional Math experience Times: To be determined student and volunteer. Location: Tutoring will take place via online option or in person at A-B Tech Community College, 340 Victoria Road, Asheville NC 28801. Spread a little love with the Therapy Dog Program at A-B Tech. The College recognizes the positive influence that therapy dogs can have on students and staff. Not to be confused with service dogs, therapy dogs help by visiting and spread kindness and providing comfort. A-B Tech Teams may either have regular routes on campus, visiting public areas, and staff offices or assist with special requests such as visiting classrooms before exams or special events on campus. A-B Tech is grateful for all the Therapy Dog Teams that support the staff and students. We hope if you have a Therapy Dog you will consider adding A-B Tech to your routine. The college requires that all Teams provide copies of their Therapy Dog Certification, and attend a new volunteer orientation session and walk-through of the campus before starting. Volunteering is available Monday - Friday 9 to 5 with some exceptions. All volunteering occurs in/near Asheville NC and a social security number is required during the application process. Volunteer Responsibilities: The owners/handlers will follow all of the rules of their certifying registry. The dog shall be under the direct and continuous supervision and control of the volunteer handler at all times. The Volunteer Coordinator will determine which therapy dogs will be invited to visit the campus. Report all incidents to the A-B Tech Campus Police, Volunteer Coordinator, and the registry, which certifies the dog and handler team. All handlers are required to attend the volunteer orientation and be registered volunteers at A-B Tech. Requirements: An application, background check and orientation/ brief training are required before starting this position. Must be able to commute to A-B Tech in Asheville NC. This position is in-person. Schedules are based on volunteer availability. Times will vary in the Summer and closed for school holidays, breaks and between semesters. Shifts occur Monday - Friday from 9 to 5 on scheduled school days. Must have a social security number, be over the age of 18 and this position is not eligible for community service. Skills Required: Only dogs certified medically fit and are trained and certified by an appropriate accrediting agency shall be allowed to visit students and staff. Their accrediting agency must annually certify all dogs. Dogs must be a minimum of one-year-old to visit. Non-spayed dogs are not allowed to visit when in estrus. All dogs must submit their up-to-date identification card from the certifying registry each year. The dog must be bathed, well-groomed and checked for signs and symptoms of health problems. Attire: Comfortable and appropriate attire is required. Building temperatures are variable and some visits are outside - please dress accordingly. Some walking is involved - comfortable footwear is recommended. Location: Various locations across A-B Tech Campus, 340 Victoria Rd., Asheville NC 28801. Department Description: The Fine Arts Department, specializing in visual art, gives students the chance to showcase their talents. Visual Art’s students participate in an annual student art show where they can exhibit in a local gallery. Volunteer Opportunity: Volunteers are an extension of the art staff and are assigned responsibilities to help A-B Tech grow and maintain its art studios. Volunteer opportunities are available throughout the year, and specific volunteer opportunities will vary depending on the needs of the art studios. Volunteers are assigned as needed in the art studios, and the number of volunteer positions is limited. Volunteers are not allowed to use products or machines to create items for themselves. The only people allowed to create and take out of the studio are students who are enrolled. Students can only create what is required for the class in which they are enrolled. Volunteer Responsibilities: * General studio organization and clean-up * Equipment maintenance * Open Studio supervision * Ceramic-specific materials work * Supervision and equipment check for light studio Requirements: * An application, background check and orientation/brief training are required before starting this position. * Must be able to commute to A-B Tech in Asheville NC. Skills Required: * Significant experience and interest in pottery and ceramics * Volunteers should be prompt, reliable, and disciplined. * We value the insights and efforts of all volunteers and rely on the vitality and fresh perspectives they infuse into the art studios. Specific Competencies: Experience with any of the following at varying degrees of experience. * Glaze mixing/chemistry * Kiln usage and maintenance * Wheel use and maintenance * Studio supervision and student assistance * Print equipment and maintenance * Cleaning of studio spaces, such as mopping, sewing, wiping down of work surfaces, etc. Times: * Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday 7am to 9am * Friday 7am to 5pm (broken into two shifts) Attire: * Comfortable and appropriate attire is required. * Room temperatures are variable (especially around the kiln) - please dress accordingly. The Social Science, Humanities and Foreign Language department houses courses in Humanities, History and Foreign Languages (French and Spanish). Volunteer Opportunity: Volunteers in this position provide support to the Spanish Language Classroom or serving as a tutor when needed. Volunteer Responsibilities: * Tutoring students enrolled in SPA-111 (Beginning Spanish 1), SPA-112 (Beginning Spanish II), SPA-211 (Intermediate Spanish 1), SPA-212 (Intermediate Spanish II) and SPA-120 (Spanish for the workplace) * Serving as a conversational partner for anyone interested in practicing spoken Spanish Requirements: * An application, background check and orientation/brief training are required before starting this position. * Must be able to commute to A-B Tech in Asheville NC.
