The new Sharp Memorial Hospital opened in 2009. The 368-bed hospital features private patient rooms, sleeper sofas for loved ones, state-of-the-art surgery suites and the largest and most modern emergency and trauma center in San Diego.
Sharp Memorial, part of the Sharp Metropolitan Medical Campus, is also a MAGNET hospital for nursing and patient care excellence. This designation is the "gold standard" for patient care and nursing excellence and it is the highest honor awarded by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Only 22 hospitals in California are MAGNET hospitals. Sharp Memorial has been a part of San Diego health care history for more than 50 years. It continues to be at the forefront of medical technology and patient satisfaction.
I really enjoy volunteering here at Sharp because I know I am helping patients and their families receive the excellent care that has been provided to my own family members in the past here at Sharp Memorial. It was volunteers and staff that made a difficult time for my family better, and I like doing my part to give back
I have been volunteering weekly at Sharp Memorial Hospital for several months now and I absolutely look forward to my weekly shifts! I have met the most amazing nurses and physicians, as a premed student this has been tremendously helpful as I embark on my journey into a career in medicine. The most amazing part about this volunteer opportunity is that I get to be a part of the Sharp Experience and put a smile on a patients face while helping those in need.
I have had such a great experience volunteering with Sharp! The application process was quick, and I was volunteering withing two weeks!! I look forward to coming in every week and meeting new volunteers as they join the program.
I volunteer in Integrative Healing giving comforting hand massages to all patients and staff and I also volunteer in Rehab working with the physical and occupational therapists. I love giving the simple gift of giving a smile to let the patients know that I care.
This is an organization that really values its volunteers by offering a wide variety of opportunities for one to serve the patients, guests, and staff. In addition, the management shows their appreciation to the volunteers through luncheons, volunteer appreciation week events, and allowing the volunteers to attend various classes that are offered to its staff. On numerous occasions I've had staff members approach me to offer their thanks for my volunteering. Some bought me lunch in the hospital cafeteria. Several managers have offered me jobs in their departments, even though I am not actively looking for a job in the healthcare field. For those who are, I would suggest you volunteer here first. Many of my volunteer colleagues tell me they have had an unforgettable and valuable experience. I totally agree! I have really enjoyed the opportunity to interact with other volunteers as well as the patients and staff during the nearly two years I have volunteered here.
Sharp has diverse opportunities for volunteers in a wonderfully supportive, appreciative, engaging environment. I've volunteered with patients and as a facilitator with new volunteers. Incredibly rewarding. Have met fantastic people and have had fun, too. I highly recommend Sharp for people considering being a volunteer.
The focus on patient care is definitely apparent at Sharp and it is nice to know that as a volunteer, you get to be a part of it as well. Volunteering here has been a great opportunity to really help people while learning about the healthcare field. The staff are all very friendly and helpful. Great place to gain experience working with all sorts of people in different hospital settings.
