The University Hospital Auxiliary is an organization of volunteers dedicated to making a difference in the lives of others - Improve the well-being of patients and hospital visitors and to make their experience as pleasant as possible. The Auxiliary provides volunteer services to the hospital, its patients and the community by informing the community about the work of the hospital and the Auxiliary. Also help support fundraising initiatives, such as new medical equipment, staff education and scholarships.

Spiritual Care volunteers assist the hospital's professional chaplain by making assigned rounds to patients, families and staff. The volunteer becomes an additional referral source to alert the chaplain of follow-up needs a patient or family may have. The goal is to create an environment where spiritual, emotional and physical healing can occur. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Provide excellent customer service - Volunteers should be self-motivated, engaged, friendly, and comfortable talking to patients/visitors Actively contribute to creating a friendly, welcoming and safe environment for UH guests Communicates clearly to ensure understanding Responds to inquiries immediately whenever possible Meets or exceeds customer expectations for service Acts as a role model for customer service Maintains professional demeanor Sign in and out of shift Improve patient experience Offers empathetic listening and supportive presence Offers prayer and/or appropriate readings only when mutually agreed upon by the patient and/or family Notifies the patient's faith community if the patient so desires and grants permission Spiritual Care Chaplains does not.... Give advice or proselytize Attempt to "fix" the patient's problems Become involved in the patient's physical care Become involved in legal or ethical issues or promote his/her own religious beliefs Share his/her own personal problems, emotional needs, or health experiences

A "FIRST IMPRESSION" means to provide assistance with navigation, information, and a culture of care. Ambassadors are staffed at each main entrance during the core business hours. Offer a warm welcome and greeting to all patients and visitors coming into the lobby. Coverage will be available during busiest hours and days of the week as determined. Ambassadors may assist with capturing patient feedback and can also assist with service recovery.

Volunteers in our nursing units help us improve the quality of patient care by supporting the nursing staff in their day-to-day operations and assisting patients and families throughout the unit. Volunteer tasks may include interacting with patients, rounding on patient’s rooms, charting medical records, assisting in discharges, answering calls, restocking supplies, assisting nursing staff with errands, and other tasks as assigned to help the unit run smoothly and allow staff to focus more time on patient care. Your role provides assurance to the clinical team that the patients feel comfortable, their needs are being met, and that there are opportunities for immediate service recovery, as necessary. Improve patient experience by visiting with patients frequently; confirm placement of name bands Deliver fresh water and ice to patient room Deliver Patient Handbook and/or newspapers to patient room Visit a with patients: Read to patients, Get patient magazines or sundries from Guest Relations Stock linen cabinets Clean patient rooms/make up beds**requires competency-ensure wearing gloves and kill time of 2 minutes Provide appropriate foods and fluids to patients/clients Tidy up lounge (i.e., refrigerator Assist with transports ** competency required Run errands to; Pharmacy for non-controlled items Deliver patient items to unit which were left behind. (i.e., pt. labels, clothes, personal items ยท Take specimens to the lab in biohazard bag & placed in approved container for transport ** competency required Help with communication between the nurses and lobby patients Check & stock supplies for: linens, urinals, bedpans, etc. Run errands to: Meet and communicate regularly with Patient Representative of assigned unit. Visit all the patients on assigned unit to exclude forensic and psychiatric patients. Nurse call bells are a priority while rounding. Respond rapidly to ensure safety of the patient. Cancel call if the non-clinical need of the patient was met. If the patient requires clinical attention, advise the C.N.A., Charge Nurse or Unit Clerk. While rounding, interaction should occur with each patient at least every 2 hours and more frequently, if required. Record every interaction with patients in the electronic Patient Rounding Tool to include any services provided, observations made, and/or issues gathered in real time. Communicate patient feedback to the Charge Nurse or Assistant Director of Nursing (if available). Contact Charge Nurse or Assistant Director of Nursing and Unit Clerk immediately if you receive and/or observe a safety concern. Contact the Assistant Director of Nursing or Charge Nurse; and Patient Relations Representative if/when you receive a complaint. Assist clinical team with clerical duties and/or projects as needed.
