I am a Peer Support Specialist and I know how valuable the warm line has and is to the peers I support

It is an amazing resource for anyone in crisis. I became a CTL volunteer on Feb. 18th after approximately 30 hours of training and have since become a level 3 volunteer, helping many people through some very hard times. The supervisors are incredible at supporting and guiding you if you get stuck or overwhelmed. They also encourage you to take care of yourself and will talk with you if you have a difficult conversation. For those who are empathetic, want to help others and need to work around your own schedule, this is the perfect way to help our brothers and sisters.

Great opportunity to learn and build skill set expecially as a peer

Everyone knows someone, and that person knows somebody else. It’s understandable for mental health to not be talked about, even though it has become more acceptable over the years. It can be difficult for those who may come from a background or culture that does not even believe in mental disorders. It is imperative for more people to be aware of this method of communication when they do not have that benefit in their lives.

It's extremely rewarding to know you are making a difference in these people's lives by just having a conversation and letting them know they aren't alone.

PRO: This organization provides a vital resource to people around the world. CON: The wait can be very long. Many of the crisis counselors are volunteers, so there are times when shortages happen. CON: When it comes to mental health issues this organization fully backs and promotes mental health drugs prescribed by doctors.

Crisis Text Line has given me invaluable crisis intervention experience. Their training program is incredibly comprehensive - anyone willing to put in the hours will become a successful counselor. I'm able to connect with dozens of people every week, and I truly feel like I'm making a difference. I'm excited to use the skills I've gained through CTL in my Social Work career.

A transformative experience for the better. Crisis Text Line staff and volunteers are dedicated, caring, empathetic people who are there to listen to those in pain. I am thrilled to have now reached Level 3 Crisis Counselor status and it's all through the well-designed training program, nurturing coaches and supervisors and fellow Crisis Counselors. The goal of helping people in crisis reach a cool calm is the same for each and every conversation. I recommend Crisis Text Line to anyone wishing to make a difference is someone's life in a real and direct way.

Thx to your newsletter, you have directed me to several nonprofit agencies to checkout, and I am grateful. I presently help with my friends at the Catholic Worker Kitchen, in beautiful downtown LA. I shall look for something else which allows me to utilize my graduate degree in Psych and my MBA. Maybe some community activist groups, nonprofit agencies formed to help the poor, with their challengers for daily survive. Peace ~ O.S.B., Oblate

Volunteering with Crisis Text Line is one of the best decisions I've ever made. I'm 8 months in and a proud Level 5 Crisis Counselor. I typically set two hour shifts twice a week, and use my educational background in Psychology and the training that was provided to help listen and work with texters in pain. Volunteer at Crisis Text Line for a rewarding and special experience helping others who need you!
by Lindsay R. (2018-12-03 16:55:32.0)
Crisis Text Line is an amazing organization! I felt supported through training and feel supported anytime I’m on the platform. I feel so connected even though I volunteer online and can’t stress how amazing the job satisfaction is.

There comes a time when we all need someone. It's easier to speak with ppl that are not in your personal life and won't be so judgmental.
by Molly W. from Jackson, MO (2018-10-01 01:03:52.0)
This is a great way to help a person in need. There are a huge number of people on there phones texting all of the time, if I could convince them to put that texting to good use, that would be great! We all go through hard times, even those who keep it on the inside ans this could be good for both parties.Mostly, you could be saving a life with just a few words.

This is an incredible volunteer experience, from the training to the ongoing support and community. It is difficult work, but it is also incredibly rewarding work. I highly recommend volunteering with CTL!

I feel every person needs to feel loved and heard. Volunteer work, to me, is a way to share my skills to assist those in need. I didn’t know where help was needed and this site has amazing opportunities in my community. I am currently a patient account representative for home health services and feel I have the knowledge and skill to help.

I’m still waiting for the decision. I submitted all my references and my approval for a background check in order to be part of the volunteer match but I was never called or assigned any task
by Daniella S. from Miami, FL (2018-04-01 09:34:57.0)
They give you a thorough training and support and is very well organized and flexible to your schedule as you work from your own desk/lap top computer with texters who reach out for help. Taking them from a hot moment to a cool calm. The pros are always accessible and on hand to help you shine in your contact with those in need. And they really care about you and how you are doing as someone who is there for others. I have had the most fulfilling convos by text that in my life I never imagined having with strangers. It is a personal growth experience, where now I am more apt to be kind to others, knowing, as someone once said, that everyone is out there fighting their own battles. I am grateful to be a part of this amazing initiative and would recommend it for anyone to experience hands one helping others.
by Rebecca P. (2018-03-17 11:34:57.0)
This is an incredible way to help people, lead by wonderful supervisors and a great training program. The community of other crisis counselors is an on-going learning community, but you end up learning the priceless skill of empathy and connectedness that comes from empowering people, most of all. Great way to volunteer your time.

Crisis Text Line is an amazing organization. Volunteering for them is an honor and helping people in their time of need is awesome. It's daunting at first but the training gives you everything you need. Just bring your empathy.

I have experienced alot in life. I feel I would be a great person to advocate to anyone going through hard times will troubles in an effort to put them back on track one step at a time.
by Rachael R. from San Antonio, TX (2018-02-19 12:54:26.0)
I absolutely love this organization. They provide people in crisis with a modern way of contacting a crisis line without needing to talk on the phone. This makes them more likely to open up about what they're experiencing. I feel I learned valuable skills that help me get them through their crisis during my volunteer sessions. You make your own hours and training is 6 weeks and about 34 hours, I believe. They do everything they can to help you feel prepared to assist those in crisis and the rewarding feeling you get when you help someone through, is amazing!
by kamora s. (2018-01-19 08:34:24.0)
I would recommend this organization to a friend or colleague because of it's uses. I am 18 years of age and i have friends from 14-35 years old. Being a teenager/adult puts a lot of pressure of your mental/emotional well being & sometimes you don't have anyone to turn to.

At the Crisis Text Line you are able to help people from the comfort of your own home. You are making a difference by listening and coming up with strategies to make individuals feel better, feel heard, and most importantly, stay safe in times of crisis.

Working on the crisis text line is a life-changing experience. The training is excellent and the opportunity to work with young people in crisis who text in for help is so very needed. It is an amazingly supportive, community and organization. Go for it!

Crisis Text Line is an incredibly well thought out, well made, and well executed volunteer operation that has the information available to prove that it is actually saving lives. Volunteering is so incredibly easy. You get plenty of training before being put into the thick of it, and the supervisors are always available to help you during your shift. You can take any shift(s) you want, as long as you meet 4 hours minimum a week. On top of that, you're constantly reminded how much you are appreciated for your work and dedication. CTL is most definitely the first volunteer operation that comes to my mind when people say they want to help others. I'd definitely recommend giving it a try if you're on the fence :)
by Marcee M. (2017-03-31 13:36:05.0)
This is an amazing opportunity to give back and be a part of something bigger than yourself, especially if you are a person that cares about people. Volunteering with CTL has taught me how to be compassionate, empathetic (there's a difference between EMpathy and SYMpathy) and how to help someone through a situation that I may not have experienced myself, and may not even be able to understand, and in some cases be the deciding factor between a person's despair and their hope. It's intense at times, and it gets emotional, but undoubtedly one of the most fulfilling volunteering experiences I've had thus far. And you don't even have to lave your home. Hope this helps!

I think the main reason that I will share what I know about Crisis Text Line is because the work they do is so powerful, as insignificant as a text may seem. It can mean the difference between life and death, literally. I will be sharing this opportunity with everyone.

Crisis Text Line is such an amazing org to be a part of. It feels so fantastic to be able to make an impact on so many lives (and I can do it from my couch)! The training and support I received from Crisis Text Line has been like no other org I've volunteered or work for. I've learned a ton, and have met so many great people in the large community of employees as well as volunteers from all over the country. It's been a great thing to put on my resume, and LinkedIN to boot! Don't hesitate! Apply to be a CC today!!!

It's an amazing opportunity to help people who need it most. The training is thorough and they really look after you as a volunteer and they care about you as a person. Being a CTL Volunteer has shaped my outlook on life in such a positive way. I would recommend it to anyone and everyone!
by Maureen C. from Waipahu, HI (2016-09-07 13:05:35.0)
I have been volunteering with Crisis Text Line for six months and it is one of the most rewarding experiences I have ever had! People text in seeking support while they are going through a wide variety of stressors. We are there to listen with compassion and discuss coping skills and other resources that will help the texter. The 34 hours of training that you receive prior to going "live" equips you with what you need to feel confident talking with people about their struggles. Even so, if you're not sure how to handle a conversation, there are plenty of other counselors online to offer advice and suggestions as well as a supervisor who oversees everything that is happening. Living in Hawaii, I have a huge time advantage. Someone can be texting in at 2AM on the east coast, that is only 9PM in Hawaii. That means we can be a huge support to people on the main land without having to stay up late! If you want to know that you've made an impact in someone's life, become a crisis counselor!

I have volunteered for Crisis Text Line for 2 years and it has been an amazing experience. I started while I was in grad school for social work and I learned so much from Crisis Text Line. it was a great supplement to my education. It is meaningful work and I feel like I am really making a difference in the lives of others.
by Theodor M. (2016-09-06 16:11:58.0)
Crisis Text Line is an amazing organization, using the medium of text to reach people in crisis nationwide. After an extensive training that helps build comfort talking about all sorts of crises people experience, we get to volunteer from home in our pajamas, saving lives as we go. The whole staff is warm and welcoming, making me feel really important as a volunteer crisis counselor. I think the cause is incredible, getting help to people who for whatever reason do not want to talk on the phone with a traditional hotline, and would rather stick to texting instead.
by Nya W. (2016-09-02 09:27:06.0)
Volunteering with CTL was nothing short of amazing! It's humbling and heartwarming to know that we're helping strangers in their time of need. I've dealt with a variety of topics including suicide, body image and depression while engaging training skills and seeking support when necessary. I often received what now feels like the greatest words ever, "Thank you". I'm so glad I discovered the CTL family because I was able grow as an individual and make a deeper impact on others.
by Natalie M. (2016-09-01 15:16:20.0)
Crisis Text Line provides a much needed service to people across the US struggling with a crisis, like suicidal thoughts, depression, anxiety, self-harm, eating disorders, and more. It is amazing to be a volunteer here. The community is like a family, you are never alone even though it's a remote volunteer job. There are always Supervisors on the platform to provide encouragement and feedback. There is a chat feature so you can communicate with other volunteers during your shift. I feel so supported. The texters are extremely appreciative of the help, it feels amazing to help strangers in their time of need. I recommend this volunteer work to anyone who wants to learn skills in active listening, volunteer on a flexible schedule, and literally save lives.
