What Lessons Did You Learn While Raising Your Teen? Families for Depression Awareness seeks adult volunteers to share their experience of - and insights from - raising teens through periods of stress, anxiety, and/or depression. Caring adults who are educated about mental health issues are better able to recognize signs of stress, anxiety, and depression and better equipped to provide constructive support to the teens in their lives so that they can get and stay well. As a volunteer, you’ll work with us to refine your story and messaging, then will talk as a member of a panel at schools, community centers, faith communities, and similar locations. You have the experience of raising a teen, so why not help others as they face similar parenting challenges? What’s involved? Learn about teen mental health issues; learn how to tell your story of parenting your teen(s); participate on panels in Massachusetts, speaking to adults who parent teens How much time? Initial training, approximately 2.5 hours total; actual presentations are 60- to 75-minutes but plan on at least 1.5 hours per event, plus travel time; anticipated not more than 1 presentation per month. Training is on a rolling basis. Any requirements? Interest in helping others support their teens’ mental health and well-being; willingness to be open about your own challenges and experiences; for now our events are virtual but they will become in person in Eastern MA when it is safe to do so. You will need to provide your own transportation for in person events (though we can reimburse for mileage). Bilingual and diverse applicants encouraged to apply.

We need young men like you to help us combat the stigma of mental health by sharing your story! Often, young boys, teens, and men won’t seek help for their mental health. They might think that it’s a sign of weakness to admit they need help. But not getting help means they will suffer more and be at risk for suicide. You are a real-life example of someone brave enough to get help and tough enough to work at getting well. With Families for Depression Awareness, you can correct people’s wrong ideas about mental health conditions and inspire teens and young adults to get the help they need and deserve. Depression affects at least six million men in the United States every year and suicide kills more teen and young adult guys than every cause of death except accidents. If you are a young man between the ages of 14 and 25 and have personal experience with depression or bipolar disorder, you have the power to change people’s minds and help prevent suicides! Join our Teen Speaker program to educate and give hope to teens across Massachusetts. You’ll get public speaking training and experience, community service hours if needed, and peer-to-peer support. Our Teen Speakers say that this program helps them to stay well. Come be a part of our community. Events are currently virtual due to Covid-19 but will eventually be held in person again. Therefore volunteers must be located in the state of MA.
