AVP Description: The Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP) works to empower people to lead nonviolent lives through affirmation, respect for all, building and enhancing of community, cooperation and trust. Historically, AVP offers a series of 3 workshops (Basic, Advanced, Training for Facilitators) in the community and in 4 correctional facilities across the state. Within correctional facilities each workshop is a partnership between volunteers from the community and residents of the correctional facility (inmates), providing a unique and meaningful opportunity to the incarcerated individuals. AVP has expanded to include Youth AVP Workshops for young people ages 10-30 in Hennepin County. AVP is working on expanding services and opportunities to provide training to more members of community and to bring programming to young people in the community. A student with this program would work closely with staff, volunteers, and incarcerated individuals to add programmatic components that would aid in growth and expansion. Students will gain skills and knowledge in program development, volunteer management, group facilitation, a deeper understanding of the barriers for those with criminal records and vulnerable youth, and so much more.
