AVP Description: The Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP) works to empower people to lead nonviolent lives through affirmation, respect for all, building and enhancing of community, cooperation and trust. Historically, AVP offers a series of 3 workshops (Basic, Advanced, Training for Facilitators) in the community and in 4 correctional facilities across the state. Within correctional facilities each workshop is a partnership between volunteers from the community and residents of the correctional facility (inmates), providing a unique and meaningful opportunity to the incarcerated individuals. AVP has expanded to include Youth AVP Workshops for young people ages 10-30 in Hennepin County. AVP is working on expanding services and opportunities to provide training to more members of community and to bring programming to young people in the community. A student with this program would work closely with staff, volunteers, and incarcerated individuals to add programmatic components that would aid in growth and expansion.
