Aunt Mary's Storybook, a cherished initiative of Companions Journeying Together, extends a heartwarming connection between incarcerated individuals in several Chicagoland county jails and Illinois state prisons and their beloved children, stepchildren, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and more. What We Do: We provide brand new books and audio recorders to those in custody, assisting them in selecting age-appropriate books for the children who mean the most to them. Each participant is given an opportunity to create a unique audio recording, reading the book and adding a personal message. On behalf of the person in custody, we then lovingly package and send the book and recording to the child. We Need Your Help: We're searching for a dedicated volunteer located in or near the La Grange area to assist us in preparing these cherished packages for mailing. This volunteer activity is done from your home. Your Role: Entering information from handwritten forms into our web application Entering data from publicly accessible databases into our web application Uploading provided audio files into our web application Preparing books for mailing Printing a computer-generated welcome letter to insert into each package Meeting with us occasionally for supplies Requirements: Access to a personal computer, internet, and printer An eye for detail Highly organized A passion for making a difference in the lives of families separated by incarceration We Provide: All necessary supplies for preparing the packages Training and support Get Involved: If you're interested in being a part of this meaningful project and you meet the above requirements, we'd love to hear from you. Transitioning from cassette tapes to CDs, and now to a web-based system, we've innovated our delivery over the years to connect families in profound ways. We now seek a dedicated PHP volunteer web developer to join our current team of talented developers. Together, you'll enhance our existing system, bringing new features to life, and smoothing out any bugs. Your work will be instrumental in enriching the lives of those separated by incarceration. What You'll Do: Collaborate with other volunteer developers to add features and fix bugs Work with a codebase hosted in GitHub, built using CodeIgniter 4, and hosted on Amazon AWS Participate in team communication via Slack Skills We're Looking For: Proficiency in PHP and SQL Experience with CodeIgniter or similar MVC frameworks Experience with Bootstrap is a plus A detail-oriented approach to coding and problem-solving A collaborative mindset and the ability to work well with a team Requirements: Must be located in the United States Please note that we are unable to assist with obtaining or maintaining a United States visa, including an OPT visa or F-1 visa Why Volunteer With Us: Your technical skills will directly impact the lives of families, helping to foster connections through our unique storybook recordings. Aunt Mary's Storybook, a project of Companions Journeying Together, is looking for a compassionate volunteer to help bring joy and connection to families separated by incarceration. This particular role operates within the DeKalb County Jail in Sycamore. Our Mission: We provide incarcerated individuals with a selection of age-appropriate books and audio recorders, assisting them in choosing the perfect book for the children they love. The participants are then given the opportunity to record themselves reading these books, and our organization sends the books and heartfelt recordings to the children. Volunteer Role: We're seeking a volunteer to join us on a monthly basis (the first Friday of each month, from 10 AM to 12 noon) at the DeKalb County Jail. Here's what you'll do: Help incarcerated people choose books that will resonate with the children most important to them (their own children, stepchildren, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, etc.) Assist with the recording sessions, capturing these special moments on a digital audio recorder Work alongside an existing, experienced volunteer, learning the ropes and making a difference Who We're Looking For: Open-mindedness: Someone open to working with diverse and justice-involved populations, embracing the chance to make a positive impact. Flexibility: A volunteer who's adaptable to changing schedules or session cancellations due to facility circumstances (e.g., lockdowns). Relevant Experience (Preferred, but Not Required): Previous experience in education, teaching, reading, literacy, tutoring, public speaking, social work, or related skills/abilities and initiatives will be a valuable addition. Positive Disposition: A calm and cool exterior, positive demeanor, and the ability to deal with multiple differing personalities, creating a supportive and encouraging environment. Background check: Willingness to undergo a background check.
