Aunt Mary's Storybook, a project of Companions Journeying Together, bridges the distance between incarcerated people and the children most important to them, by recording touching audio readings of stories. Transitioning from cassette tapes to CDs, and now to a web-based system, we've innovated our delivery over the years to connect families in profound ways. We now seek a dedicated PHP volunteer web developer to join our current team of talented developers. Together, you'll enhance our existing system, bringing new features to life, and smoothing out any bugs. Your work will be instrumental in enriching the lives of those separated by incarceration. What You'll Do: Collaborate with other volunteer developers to add features and fix bugs Work with a codebase hosted in GitHub, built using CodeIgniter 4, and hosted on Amazon AWS Participate in team communication via Slack Skills We're Looking For: Proficiency in PHP and SQL Experience with CodeIgniter or similar MVC frameworks Experience with Bootstrap is a plus A detail-oriented approach to coding and problem-solving A collaborative mindset and the ability to work well with a team Requirements: Must be located in the United States Please note that we are unable to assist with obtaining or maintaining a United States visa, including an F-1 / OPT visa. Your Magical Role in the Storybook Project: Data Wizardry: Transform handwritten forms into digital treasures by entering information into our web application. Database Detective: Dive into publicly accessible databases, extracting vital information to bring our stories to life. Audio Alchemist: Upload heartwarming audio files made by incarcerated people, turning spoken words into golden memories. Parcel Preparer: Carefully package books, readying them for their journey to eager young minds. Letter Scribe: Print and include a welcoming letter in each package, adding a personal touch of care. Supply Gatherer: Occasionally meet with us to collect the tools needed for your mission. (Otherwise, this volunteer activity is performed from your home.) Companions Journeying Together is seeking a dynamic self-starter to assist with social media efforts in a virtual team setting. We are seeking 1-2 individuals to volunteer from home to assist our organization in keeping supporters up to date about our organization and the topics of incarceration, parenting, reading, and literacy. We envision this person sharing valuable content with social media community that is connected to our mission, developing graphics to enhance social media messages, and making recommendations to us on new ideas, directions, and tools for social media. The ideal volunteer will have a firm grasp of available tools and platforms in the social media space, notably Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn. We also seek a volunteer who possesses excellent written oral communication and interpersonal skills and are self-motivated, possess good organizational skills, and are detail-oriented. Finally, we are seeking volunteers who have professional experience in any of the following areas: building a social media following; strategic marketing and messaging; activating a following/developing calls-to-action for fundraising. We are seeking someone available at least 6 hours/week. If you are interested in learning more, please contact us.
