One of the ways that Catholic Charities helps newly arriving refugee families is to secure safe, clean, affordable housing for them. We need help setting up the apartment or house. This can include cleaning, moving furniture, making beds, arranging the kitchen, and decorating. The finishing touches volunteers add help make the house into a Home. This position will be "on-call". We will usually have about 2 weeks' notice of shift timings. It is dependent on the family's scheduled arrival to Erie. Set up times will generally be during business hours M-F or on Saturday morning, exceptions can be made.

Catholic Charities continues to receive more new refugee families and needs to accommodate them all in the English classes we offer. The more volunteers we have, the more we can accommodate the varying levels of English with our adult students. Our focus is on speaking and functional English, tailored to students’ needs and interests. On Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday the students are primarily new arrivals who are also currently attending Cultural Orientation sessions. Volunteers can be classroom assistants, small group leaders, one-on-one conversation partners, or lead teacher. Volunteer Skills / Strengths: Desire to engage with diverse clients to form strong connections. Flexibility and comfort with chaotic and uncertain situations. Familiarity with Adult Learning Principles and using these strategies with our students. Taking initiative to learn and access available resources.

Volunteers are needed for our Cultural Orientation classes. You will be working with staff member and possibly other volunteers. You can be a classroom assistant, OR if you have a specialty area that you would like to be a special guest presenter for (some examples include budgeting, US Laws, and Welcome to Erie). Opportunity to lead the class may be offered eventually, but it is not expected or required. Orientation classes are on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursda.y. You can volunteer for one class or multiple.

We accept donations of furniture, household items, and clothing to give to our clients. We are looking for volunteers to sort donations and organize the clothing room on a regular basis. You would also help with inventory management- keeping track of what is being donated and gathering proper documentation when clients receive donations. During designated times, clients will be invited into the clothing room. You would act as an attendant during that time- helping the clients find items and keep the room neat. Currently the hours for the donation room are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am-2pm. It is broken into two separate shifts for convenience, although some volunteers like working the entire four hours.
