The Maryland Science Center is proud to be home to the St. John Properties IMAX Theater. This five-story, 38 surround-sound speaker theater plays a mix of both 2D and 3D IMAX films. Volunteers are needed to ensure guests have the best IMAX experience possible. WE REALLY NEED YOU FOR THIS SCHOOL YEAR! See below for schedule. Duties as Usher: Collect tickets Assist guests as they enter and exit theater Seat groups Observe audiences during shows Clean and maintain theater in between films Help Maryland Science Center guests have the best visit possible. Lobby Ambassadors provide visitors with a warm welcome and are on hand to collect ticket stubs and answer questions. This is a great role for volunteers who are at ease interacting with the public and have excellent customer service skills. Duties as Lobby Ambassador: Welcome guests, hand out map guides, and provide general information in front harbor lobby Collect tickets as guests enter the museum and ensure guests are wearing the day's colored wristband Act as "quasi-security" for the front harbor lobby to ensure visitor safety and satisfaction Roam exhibit floors, answer questions, and ensure guests are having a safe and pleasant museum experience Refer complaints in a courteous manner to the Manager of the Day Required Skills: Excellent communication and customer service skills; at ease with people of all ages Dependability Ability to exhibit great patience with school-aged children and their adult chaperones Physical Requirements: Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time Ability to use stairs both inside the theater and on museum floor Comfortable working in low lighting (Usher work) Training: Provided by Guest Services Schedule: SCHOOL YEAR (October-June): Weekly 4-hour shifts available Tuesdays-Sundays, ideally 10 AM-2 PM. SUMMER (June-August): Weekly 4-hour shifts mostly available Saturdays and Sundays, but there would be some weekdays, as well. Minimum Commitment: Two 4-hour shifts per month. Sidebar: Opportunities exist to serve as a Ticket Agent, as well, but this would be on rare occasions and only as the volunteer is comfortable. Field Trip Ambassador Help hundreds of school children have the best field trip ever at the Maryland Science Center! Field Trip Ambassadors board arriving buses to greet students, teachers, and chaperones. They inform everyone of the Maryland Science Center’s guidelines, provide a brief overview of exhibits, and assist teachers/chaperones with the check-in process. Ability to provide information in a cheerful manner a must. Duties: Board buses and greet students with a smile Inform students and chaperones about Maryland Science Center rules, exhibits, show times, etc. Assist teachers/chaperones with check-in Help students safely exit their bus and enter the building Required Skills: Excellent communication and customer service skills; at ease with people Ability to exhibit great patience with school-aged children and their adult chaperones Foreign language skills a plus, especially Spanish Physical Requirements: Ability to stand for extended periods of time Ability to climb in and out of buses Training: Provided by Guest Services Schedule: School year only, October-June. Shifts are currently available Friday mornings, 9am-12pm. Minimum Commitment: Two 3-hour shifts per month, for a minimum of six months. A willingness to volunteer for additional hours is always welcome!

Promotional Day Volunteer Join us on the most exciting day of the month to help teach kids about science! Promotional days take place once a month and have additional special activities centered around a specific theme-like Bubble Days, Flight Fest, or Astro Adventure. Volunteers will work a station with an activity in 2.5 hour shifts. Duties: Greet guests and explain the activity Inform guests about Maryland Science Center rules, exhibits, show times, etc. Assist guests with the activity should they need it Required Skills: Excellent communication and customer service skills; at ease with people Ability to exhibit great patience with school-aged children and their adult chaperones Previous teaching experience a plus, but not required Training: Training for your assigned activity will be provided by the Marketing Assistant. You will always be trained before speaking to guests. Schedule: Promotional days take place on Saturdays or Sundays once a month, year-round. Shifts are typically available from either 11:30AM - 2PM or 2PM - 4:30PM. Minimum Commitment: One 2.5-hour shift per month, for a minimum of three months. A willingness to volunteer for additional hours is always welcome!

Planetarium Operator Share your passion for all things astronomical by volunteering in the Davis Planetarium. Present astronomy programs in our Digital Planetarium, operate and monitor computer and projection equipment, and manage crowds and physical space. Duties: Usher guests into the Planetarium Introduce and present live planetarium shows to audiences Engage guests in a variety of astronomical based topics Operate Digital Planetarium Required Knowledge/Skills: Public speaking, knowledge/interest in astronomy and night sky, comfortable learning digital planetarium software and technology, and a keen eye for detail are all necessary skills. Comfort & familiarity operating a computer Ability to speak to and deal with public in courteous and friendly manner Outgoing; at ease with people of all ages Prior knowledge of astronomy helpful, but willingness to learn is acceptable substitute Physical Requirements: Comfortable working in low lighting Ability to present a 30-minute live presentation while operating the digital planetarium software Training: Will be provided by Planetarium staff. Schedule: Shifts are available on Fridays (12-3:30pm), Saturdays (12-4:30pm), and Sundays (12-4:30pm). Volunteers must be able to commit to one shift per week.
