Drivers age 55+ with a good driving record are needed to drive a van serving most areas of San Diego County with special needs in the northern and central parts of San Diego County including Poway, Rancho Santa Fe, Encinitas, Escondido, Valley Center and Fallbrook. Most assignments are for 3-4 morning hours one day per week. Grocery routes pick up unsold groceries at stores and deliver to food pantries. Food harvest routes pick up loaded boxes from residential harvests and deliver to similar locations--sometimes more than one delivery point. Drivers may be accompanied by other non-driving volunteers to help with loading and unloading. Drivers need not be able to lift filled boxes of fruit or groceries, but that would be helpful. Prospective drivers attend a coaching session with a driver instructor -- a one-hour classroom session and one hour behind the wheel experience every two years. Drivers also consent to DMV notification to Senior Gleaners of any driving infractions. This is a very rewarding assignment with food distributors delighted to receive the surplus food.

STAY ACTIVE by working under trees loaded with fruit. MAKE NEW FRIENDS. HELP FEED hungry residents. We need volunteers 55 and older to help pick and transport fruit in most areas of San Diego County. Most crews pick on Tuesday mornings, but some form mini-crews of family and friends who set their own schedule. There is no minimum hourly requirement for volunteering, but most volunteers serve for 3-4 hours per week. Some volunteers haul up to 300 pounds of food in their own vehicles traveling 10-20 miles to food distribution agencies. Other volunteers drive a Gleaner-owned van (or assist as sorters and loaders) to move unsold groceries from supermarkets to warehouses. Senior Gleaners donates the fruit and food to over 75 nonprofits, including the San Diego Food Bank, Feeding San Diego, food pantries, churches and similar organizations throughout San Diego County. If by chance you don't get a response from us within a few days, please email info@seniorgleanerssdco.org or gm@seniorgleanerssdco.org.

Board members do not need to be 55 or other and may be of any age. They should reflect the communities that we serve, and bring personal skill-sets that enhance the oversight and management of the organization. Members attend quarterly virtual meetings. Between meetings, they work on committee assignments. Members are expected to make an annual financial contribution. Approved by a vote of the board, officers serve for a term of two years and may serve an additional two years in the same position.
