Mission Statement

Our mission is to feed the hungry through agencies in San Diego that qualify their recipients. We GLEAN excess food from area fields, grocery stores and packing sheds. Our mission is also to alleviate problems aggravated by lack of nutrition. We do not buy any food. We have no paid staff. All money raised through grants and donations goes toward our overhead of warehousing the food and driving vans to pick up and distribute the food.

Description

Senior Gleaners has been feeding the hungry in San Diego since 1992. Using the volunteer skills of seniors (age 55 and over), we GLEAN excess food from area fields, grocery stores and packing sheds that would otherwise be destroyed. This food is then distributed to over 30 food-giving agencies throughtout the county. Agencies are screened to determine that the food is only given to those in need as regulated by federal poverty guidelines. More than 5,500 clients from babies to senior citizens were served this past year. We need volunteers ages 55 and more to help with all aspects of our work.
