Drivers age 55+ with a good driving record needed to drive a van serving most areas of San Diego County with special needs in the northern and central parts of San Diego County including Poway, Rancho Santa Fe, Encinitas, Escondido, Valley Center and Fallbrook. Most assignments are for 3-4 morning hours one day per week. Grocery routes pick up unsold groceries at stores and deliver to food pantries. Food harvest routes pick up loaded boxes from residential harvests and deliver to similar locations--sometimes more than one delivery point. Drivers may be accompanied by other non-driving volunteers to help with loading and unloading. Drivers need not be able to lift filled boxes of fruit or groceries, but that would be helpful. Prospective drivers attend a coaching session with a driver instructor -- a one-hour classroom session and one hour behind the wheel experience every two years. Drivers also consent to DMV notification to Senior Gleaners of any driving infractions. This is a very rewarding assignment with food distributors delighted to receive the surplus food.

Our mission is to feed the hungry through agencies in San Diego that qualify their recipients. We GLEAN excess food from private yards, area fields, and grocery stores. Our mission is also to alleviate problems aggravated by lack of nutrition. We do not buy any food. All money raised through grants and donations goes toward our overhead of transporting the food and driving vans to pick up and distribute the food. We also provide meaningful activity for seniors.
Description
Senior Gleaners has been feeding the hungry in San Diego since 1992. Using the volunteer skills of seniors (age 55 and over), we GLEAN excess food from numerous sources including backyards, farms and grocery stores. This food is then distributed to food-giving agencies throughtout the county. We need volunteers ages 55 and more to help with all aspects of our work.
