Can your knit, quilt or crochet? Mary Washington Hospice needs you! We are looking for individuals who can make patriotic lap blankets for our veterans and/or their spouses on our hospice services. Blankets can be any size - but we find the lap size is very popular! These will be given to veterans upon hospice admission as our token of our gratitude for their service.

Patient and family care volunteers assist in providing support to hospice patients, caregivers, and/or family members. Duties include providing regular supportive visits, respite care and/or assistance with household tasks as needed by the patient and family. Common requests include providing companionship to the patient, playing cards or board games, reading to or with patients, and participating in life review activities. Caregiver support can include picking up groceries or providing pet relief. Patient care volunteers agree to a commitment of up to 4 hours per week and demonstrate a commitment to quality services to our patients, their families, and hospice staff. Training is provided and required as part of the onboarding process.

Mary Washington Hospice is seeking certified pet therapy dogs to join our volunteer program! Volunteers and their dogs visit hospice patients wherever they call home - nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and private homes. Dogs must be certified, registered, and insured by a therapy dog organization that certifies, registers, and insures dogs. All handlers will go through the volunteer services orientation process and onboarding through the Mary Washington Hospice Volunteer Services Department. Our service area covers Planning District 16 and volunteers are needed in all geographic regions.

Mary Washington Hospice's We Honor Veterans program is looking for volunteers! The goal is to provide hospice care for veterans based on a foundation of compassionate listening, respectful inquiry, and grateful acknowledgment of military service. We provide training to address how to handle veteran-specific physical and emotional issues that may arise near the end of life. Volunteers provide critical support, compassion and companionship to the Veterans. We prefer to utilize volunteers who are Veterans themselves, as there is a special bond sharing experiences in military service.

This opportunity provides ongoing telephone support to bereaved caregivers and family members who have been identified by our bereavement counselors as appropriate. This position is perfect for someone who is looking for a weekly commitment and is comfortable speaking about grief. The ideal volunteer will be emotionally mature, have good listening skills, and must complete volunteer and bereavement training. Major duties and responsibilities: Under the supervision of assigned staff provide regular contact by telephone during the year following the death as indicated in the bereavement plan of care. Informs bereaved about bereavement programs and resources in the community. Properly documents all contacts, visits, activities, and reports to the appropriate bereavement staff at regular intervals. Reports concerns to bereavement staff regarding special circumstances or situations. Respect the confidentiality of the patients, family members, and staff following all relevant procedures. Agree to a commitment as a bereavement volunteer for a period of one year.
