As an organic farm cart located in the Santa Barbara County certified food desert, we serve as an essential resource to the local community. We offer a fresh selection of fruits, vegetables, baked goods, flowers and other locally made artisan products for a whole community. We are a no-touch farm cart protecting both you and our clients. That means that clients are introduced to the cart and then you make the selection for them. Our goal is to be a part of the solution to the ways that foods are produced while providing educational resources for sustainable agriculture. Job responsibilities include Educating customers about our organic produce Educating customer about our mission to help feed underrepresented populations within Santa Barbara County Educating customers about our mission to feed food and medically fragile in Summerland Setting up our food cart and at times helping in the kitchen Selecting and bagging desired products Ability to handle cash and complete transactions through Square (we train) Arranging flower bouquets and displays at our food cart General cart maintenance such as organizing our storage shed, cleaning the cart and cart area on a shift basis Branding (stamping and labeling bags) Completing a day of labor on one of our farms for a greater understanding about what farming is all about!

Santa Barbara Agriculture & Farm Education Foundation: Sweet Wheel Farm Volunteer Description: Spend time outdoors on the Sweet Wheel Summerland Farm while learning regenerative, organic agriculture techniques. Whether you're a gardening novice or a seasoned pro, we invite you to roll up your sleeves and get your hands dirty in the soil. We depend on the passion, energy, and talent of volunteers like you to help provide fresh, pesticide-free produce to those facing food insecurity. The size of our farm directly correlates with the size of our volunteer base, meaning more volunteers equals more food grown! As a token of our appreciation, we’ll reward you with a $10 farmstand certificate for every shift worked, and weekly, regular volunteers can enjoy a 50% discount at the farmstand! Specific Duties: Planting seeds and transplanting seedlings. Weeding, plant removal, and cleanup. Harvesting, bagging, and cleaning produce. Keeping pathways clean and clear of debris. Assisting with simple repairs. Performing other duties as requested. Skills: No prior farm or gardening experience is necessary. Ability to work outside for 2-3 hours in varying weather conditions. Capable of bending, kneeling, and occasionally lifting heavy items. Willingness to follow directions and work effectively both individually and as part of a team. Good communication skills. Volunteers will need to schedule their weeks and days of work in advance. Depending on the weather, volunteers may not be needed every scheduled day. Please refrain from wearing open-toed shoes, sandals, or flip-flops. Volunteers must adhere to proper safe food handling and personal hygiene policies. Punctuality, attention to detail, and adherence to safety guidelines are imperative. Since we are obtaining our organic certification, dogs are not allowed at the farm. Operating under the umbrella of the Santa Barbara Agriculture and Farm Education Foundation, we are on a mission to empower the next generation of farmers while ensuring food security for food-insecure communities. We provide educational resources for sustainable agriculture, advocate for the benefits of fresh food consumption, and foster a sense of community through food. Our commitment extends to donating food to individuals and charitable organizations, promoting natural and organic farming practices, and creating a sanctuary for organic farming and green spaces. Internship Overview: Our Regenerative Agriculture Internship at Sweet Wheel Farm & Flowers is designed for students interested in gaining experience in small-scale sustainable agriculture. As an intern, you will have the opportunity to engage in all aspects of the farm. We believe in nurturing your individuality and will tailor the internship to your interests and passions. Whether you're keen on digging into sustainable farming practices, expanding our social media presence, delving into nonprofit management, or operating our farm cart, there's a place for you here. This isn't just an internship; it's a platform for you to explore your interests and contribute meaningfully to our farm and community. Please note that this is an unpaid internship, and participation does not imply an offer of employment. However, we are happy to collaborate with academic institutions to offer this internship for college credit. Internship Activities: Here’s a glimpse of what you can expect to delve into: Farm Production: Engage in all stages of farm production, from bed preparation to harvesting, washing, and beyond. Leading Farm Volunteers: Guide and mentor farm volunteers, sharing your knowledge and passion for agriculture, and fostering a sense of community among volunteers while ensuring that farm activities run smoothly. Special Project Development: Contribute to a special project such as creating a native seed library, establishing a pollinator garden, or organizing educational workshops to enhance community awareness. Social Media and Outreach: Enhance our online presence by managing social media platforms, creating engaging content, and fostering connections with our audience. Nonprofit Operations: Gain insights into nonprofit operations, fundraising, and community outreach. Farm Cart Operations: Take charge of our farm cart, interacting with customers, sharing farm stories, and promoting our produce. Additional Details: Scheduling: This internship offers flexible scheduling to accommodate your busy school schedule. You can tailor the hours per week to fit your availability, with a minimum requirement of 10 hours per week. However, we ask that you commit to at least one scheduled volunteer shift per week. Santa Barbara Agriculture & Farm Education Foundation: Food Delivery Volunteer Description: SBAFE Foundation is dedicated to providing fresh, chemical-free, regenerative, and sustainably-grown food to food-insecure families and medical patients in Santa Barbara County, free of charge. As a Food Delivery Volunteer, your role is crucial in packaging and delivering this produce directly to residents’ homes. As a token of our appreciation, we’ll reward you with a $10 farmstand certificate for every shift worked, and weekly, regular volunteers can enjoy a 50% discount at the farmstand! Specific Duties: Package produce in bags with care and attention. Safely transport produce to client’s homes. Engage with clients respectfully and relay any feedback to staff. Report any concerns that may impact the safety of volunteers, employees, residents, or assets. Skills: Ability to stand, walk, and lift items. Capability to follow directions and work with minimal supervision. Proficiency in using a mobile phone for navigation to food delivery locations. Excellent communication skills. Requirements: Volunteers will need their own mode of transportation. Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age, possess a valid driver’s license, and have auto insurance. Santa Barbara Agriculture & Farm Education Foundation: Baking/Cooking Volunteer Description: Are you passionate about baking and eager to serve the community? Join our team at SBAFE Foundation! We bake an array of mouthwatering treats for our local community, including the Summerland farm cart, food deliveries to those in need, and Girls Inc. in Carpinteria. We are also on the lookout for volunteers to teach members of Girls Inc. how to make healthy and delicious snacks on a weekly basis. You are welcome to participate in baking, teaching, or both! As a token of our appreciation, we’ll reward you with a $10 farmstand certificate for every shift worked, and weekly, regular volunteers can enjoy a 50% discount at the farmstand! Specific Duties: Bake a variety of pastries, bread, jams, salsas, tortillas, and/or healthy snacks for Girls Inc. Share your baking expertise with Girls Inc. members to help them make delicious, healthy snacks. Maintain a clean and organized baking space. Fulfill other baking-related tasks as requested by the team. Skills: Practical knowledge of baking and/or making jams, salsas, or tortillas. Awareness of food safety and hygiene principles. Ability to follow recipes and operate weighing scales accurately. Strong communication skills. Schedule: This role requires a commitment of at least one day per week. Volunteers will be asked to attend a trial day and to provide at least one employment and/or character reference. Upon successful completion, the placement will begin shortly thereafter based on mutual agreement. Cooking and baking takes place on Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
