Baking/Cooking Volunteer

Description: Are you passionate about baking and eager to serve the community? Join our team at SBAFE Foundation! We bake an array of mouthwatering treats for our local community, including the Summerland farm cart, food deliveries to those in need, and Girls Inc. in Carpinteria. We are also on the lookout for volunteers to teach members of Girls Inc. how to make healthy and delicious snacks on a weekly basis. You are welcome to participate in baking, teaching, or both!

As a token of our appreciation, we’ll reward you with a $10 farmstand certificate for every shift worked, and weekly, regular volunteers can enjoy a 50% discount at the farmstand!

Specific Duties:

  • Bake a variety of pastries, bread, jams, salsas, tortillas, and/or healthy snacks for Girls Inc.
  • Share your baking expertise with Girls Inc. members to help them make delicious, healthy snacks.
  • Maintain a clean and organized baking space.
  • Fulfill other baking-related tasks as requested by the team.

Skills:

  • Practical knowledge of baking and/or making jams, salsas, or tortillas.
  • Awareness of food safety and hygiene principles.
  • Ability to follow recipes and operate weighing scales accurately.
  • Strong communication skills.

Schedule: This role requires a commitment of at least one day per week. Volunteers will be asked to attend a trial day and to provide at least one employment and/or character reference. Upon successful completion, the placement will begin shortly thereafter based on mutual agreement. Cooking and baking takes place on Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. We work with Girls Inc. Monday, Thursday, and Friday.

What to Bring:

  • Enthusiasm for baking and helping the community.
  • Apron and attire suitable for baking.

Additional Information:

  • Volunteers will book their baking shifts in advance.
  • Proper safe food handling and personal hygiene policies must be followed.
  • Punctuality, attention to detail, and adherence to safety guidelines are essential.

Mission Statement

To educate, promote and increase awareness on how our food is grown, propagated and distributed to minors, underserved, unrecognized and fragile populations particularly in the food desert areas of Santa Barbara County through innovative farming. To donate food from our farm to those in need supporting individuals and other charitable organizations with natural and organically farmed products. Our mission is strictly educational and charitable.

Description

Our goals include:

- Keep the Summerland Farm for organic and regenerative agriculture, green preserve and solve the food desert.
- Educate children to grow and propagate regenerative foods.
- Grow enough food to replace food desert classification in Summerland.
- Create an active and retired military nutrition station to increase both physical and mental health with fresh organic foods.
- Collaborate and fold the farm cart into the nonprofit for the good of the community.
- Teach organic farming and utilize collaboration practices.
- Highlight global awareness of farming through foods we grow and demonstrate regenerative farming with innovative water and energy solutions.
