OHSU is Oregon’s only public academic health center. Every day, we heal bodies. Ease pain. Welcome new life. Bring the mysteries of science into crisp focus. Teach and challenge the next generation of health professionals. Turn the impossible into reality. Together we are working toward a cause bigger than any of us: to bring health and hope to all. We invite you to join us. Everyday, Patient Engagement volunteers show up to provide comfort and companionship to patients who are staying in the hospital. From providing a warm blanket to a family member visiting for their loved one, to distracting a patient with conversation while they wait for a procedure, the impact of a volunteer is felt throughout 20+ inpatient units at OHSU. If you love people and are passionate about helping others in their time of need, you will find being a Emergency Department Volunteer to be a rewarding experience. OHSU asks for a 6 month weekly commitment to be a volunteer in our program, though many volunteers choose to stay longer because of how much they enjoy being a volunteer and making a difference. No healthcare experience is necessary.

Volunteers in these positions work directly with our patients and staff members in multiple medical units in our hospital, helping to support the patients and their families throughout their hospital stay. Volunteers are in place to provide comfort and understanding to the patients in the form of distraction such as conversation, gaming, entertainment, or simply just being in place to help another person that may be struggling to help themselves. These volunteer positions will provide for that need that many have to serve others and their community, as well as your own personal will to find a fulfilling opportunity to give of yourself in a rewarding way. We have multiple Intensive Care, Acute Care, Trauma, Emergency Departments, Oncology Units, Cardiac Units, and Neuro Units, as well as Orthopedic and other locations where a volunteer can find a short term (6 months) or long term (any number of years) placement. If you have the desire to work with babies, children, teens, or adults, we probably have a program for you. https://www.ohsu.edu/visitors-and-volunteers

The volunteer provides that welcoming interaction, and reduces the stress that a person feels when entering surroundings that are unfamiliar to them. These interactions may be with individuals such as visiting scholars and providers, patients and their families, and students that are new to these surroundings but are attending OHSU for a learning experience. OHSU volunteers have an opportunity to enhance a person's day with every interaction that they have, whether they are helping to discharge a patient, delivering a special gift to a patient room, or simply walking and talking with an individual as they escort them to a particular site or location here on campus.
