Computers for the Blind (CFTB) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that provides computers, software, and training to persons with visual impairments. We have a small staff base, so most of our processes are performed by volunteers who desire to help the community. We are currently looking for volunteers to help us build the computers that we ship to our customers. We build 150+ computers a month, making sure they are in working order and customizing them for each recipient. We are looking for volunteers who match the following requirements: Can commit to 4-5 shifts a month. Have basic knowledge of computer systems, including hardware and software. Can accurately follow instructions and procedures. Can perform the following duties of a build volunteer. Each of our build volunteers will perform some or all of the following duties: Inspect, test, and repair computer hardware. Clean computers thoroughly (dust, residue, dirt, liquids, etc.) Set up computer BIOS per instructions. Set up and customize OS and programs to match client’s order. Maintain documentation to help track all aspects of order. Pack and prepare computers for shipment according to instructions. Assist in inventory management and processing as necessary. Assist in other appropriately assigned tasks as necessary. Our volunteering hours are Monday-Thursday, 9am to 5pm, in-person in Richardson, TX. While we don’t have any minimum or maximum time requirements, we do find that a 3-4 hour shift allows our volunteers enough time to process a computer.
