Computers for the Blind (CFTB) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that provides computers, software, and training to persons with visual impairments. We have a small staff base, so most of our processes are performed by volunteers who desire to help the community. We are currently looking for volunteers to help us repair donated computers that have hardware or physical problems. Many computers we receive need help before they are ready to be assigned to our clients. Without repair, we would have to recycle them.

We are looking for volunteers who match the following requirements:

  • Can commit to 4-5 shifts a month.
  • Have extensive knowledge of computer systems, including hardware and software.
  • Have previous experience with hardware level repair.
  • Can accurately follow instructions and procedures.
  • Can perform the following duties of a repair volunteer.

Each of our repair volunteers will perform some or all of the following duties:

  • Inspect computers for physical damage and make fixes as needed.
  • Test and troubleshoot basic hardware components (lcd, keyboard, ports, power delivery, fans, etc.)
  • Use electronic equipment to assist in duties (soldering, variable power supplies, multimeters, oscilloscope, etc.)
  • Repair/replace hardware components that are faulty through the following methods:
    • Restoring original part to working order
    • Replacing broken parts with working ones
    • Fixing board level problems through soldering or other repairs
  • Make recommendations of purchases needed to fix systems.
  • Performing duties of our Build Volunteers as necessary.
  • Performing inventory management tasks as necessary.
  • Performing other appropriate tasks as necessary.

Our volunteering hours are Monday-Thursday, 9am to 5pm, in-person in Richardson, TX. While we don’t have any minimum or maximum time requirements, we do find that a 3-4 hour shift allows our volunteers enough time to process a computer.
