Digital communication is essential nowadays! We log in for many interactions that used to happen in person, such as a doctor's visit or a class at the senior center. Help an older adult learn to use an internet-enabled device. Our volunteers may install internet, deliver a tablet, and assist with set up and how-to on applications, including email or video-conferencing software. SCES Technology Coach volunteers follow COVID-19 protocol during an initial home visit; after that, additional help is over the phone. SCES requires volunteers to be vaccinated against COVID-19 and to have received a booster if eligible. Volunteers accompany seniors to medical appointments (in a taxi, other community transportation, or volunteer's vehicle). We provide training, additional liability insurance, and a small travel stipend. We're looking for volunteers with sensitivity to elders, reliability, and good communication abilities. Patience with waiting for arranged transportation and dealing with anxious or frail elders is a must! Time Commitment: We request that volunteers provide us with a weekday when they could go to appointments. When an opportunity arises, we contact you to see if you are available that day. A typical trip is two to four hours, but we'll request that you have full availability on the day that you accept a trip. We’re looking for volunteers who can plan to stay with the program for at least a year. Somerville-Cambridge Elder Services requires staff and volunteers to be vaccinated against COVID-19, and to have received a booster.

On Thanksgiving Day, our paid Meals-on-Wheels drivers have the holiday off, so we operate the meal delivery with volunteers! In 2022, we served over 450 meals. We’re seeking Drivers ( possibly accompanied by a "Runner") to deliver Meals on Wheels to home bound seniors in Somerville and Cambridge. We especially would like help from volunteers who can drive their personal vehicle, and we encourage drivers to team together with members of their own household. It's not necessary to drive! We're also looking for Logistics volunteers to help pack meals in thermal bags for the delivery routes and to help direct traffic in our parking lot to keep arrivals orderly. Logistics volunteers are asked to arrive at 8:30 am. This event is popular with people who are looking to do something meaningful and show thanks for their own blessings. Children are welcome to volunteer with parental supervision. Takes place annually, on Thanksgiving morning, with delivery shifts starting at 9:30 am. Somerville-Cambridge Elder Services requires staff and volunteers to be vaccinated against COVID-19, and to have received a booster (including children). Volunteer application required for adults age 18+: https://form.jotform.com/211745812650150

Volunteer drivers are urgently needed! Help deliver groceries once a month to older adults in our Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP)! We partner with the Greater Boston Food Bank, which delivers bagged groceries to the Arts at the Armory in Somerville. Logistics volunteers are needed to unload pallets, pack vegetables, and load boxes into drivers' vehicles. From there, delivery drivers and runners use a personal car to deliver them to older adults on a route. The event takes place on the 1st Tuesday of each month, starting between 8 am and 9 am, and the time commitment will be about 2 hours. Masks are required when delivering to recipients. SCES requires volunteers to be vaccinated against COVID-19, including boosters.
