New Leash on Life USA is looking for volunteers to assist with general dog activities. A flexible schedule is appreciated, as is a drivers’ license and reliable car, but the only requirement to volunteer with New Leash on Life is a love of dogs and a belief in the power of second chances. Different types of volunteer opportunities are described below: Dog Selection Dog Selection Day happens about three times per year. A group of volunteers will go to the Animal Care and Control Team of Philadelphia from open to close and evaluate dogs to determine which are the best fit for our program. Experience with dogs or a shelter environment is a plus. Socialization* Socialization events are essentially doggy play dates. We will take the dogs out of the prisons on select days to take them to the park for a walk or play time. We may also take them to a dog-friendly brewery or cafe to expose them to different sights, sounds, smells, and people so that they know how to behave and have a better chance of a successful adoption. New Leash can always use more dog handlers who are capable of handling strong dogs. Transporting* Help transport adoptable dogs to/from adoption events, adoption meets, vet appointments, socialization events, or dog arrival days. A driver’s license and car is required to transport. Events* New Leash events include adoption events, fundraisers, community service events like Pet Food Pantries and Vaccine Clinics, partnerships with companies/organizations across Philly, and tabling at existing events to promote adoption and recruit volunteers and fosters. Helping transport dogs during events can be appreciated but is not always required. *For these opportunities, a prison badge is not required, but can make things easier and allow you to volunteer more often. For information on obtaining a prison badge, please discuss with the Volunteer Coordinator.

New Leash on Life USA is seeking foster homes in the Delaware Valley area. New Leash provides all medical care, supplies, food, and vet transportation while a dog is in foster care. We have four different types of foster opportunities: Temporary/Emergency Foster Home Volunteers Temporary/emergency foster homes are needed to place dogs who need short term housing, typically 1 - 7 days. Long Term Foster Home Volunteers Foster homes are needed to place dogs in a stress free and safe environment to keep the dog healthy and adoptable, typically 1 week - 2 months. YARD Foster Fostering for the YARD (Young Adult Reentry and Diversion) program requires a minimum of an eight-week foster commitment. You and your foster dog will attend Dog Training classes with our Certified Dog Trainer once a week for 8 weeks at our Philadelphia office. Foster-to-Adopt If you are considering adopting but not sure, fostering is a great way to test-drive dog ownership without the commitment. With that being said, here at New Leash we love foster fails! If you and your foster dog are a great match, then we will be happy to finalize an adoption for you and your dog. Is Fostering Right For You? You may be a great fit for fostering if you: Have a reliable mode of transportation (preferred but not required) Have a safe home that allows pets Have a lot of love to give!
