Mission Statement
The mission of the Colusa County Free Library is to maintain and improve the lives of all county residents by providing access to information and resources to enhance and contribute to individual knowledge and an increased quality of life. The mission of the Colusa County Free Library Literacy Program is to reach all county families in need of literacy assistance, promote reading enjoyment for all family members, and help adults to improve their reading and writing skills in English so that they may reach personal and professional goals that will increase the standard of living for themselves and their families.
Description
Colusa County has the second lowest literacy rate in the state of California; 34% of Colusa County residents cannot read above a 6th grade reading level. This means that one in three Colusa County residents cannot read and write sufficiently to carry out day-to-day activities at work and home.
In order to meet the needs of a diverse community of learners, the Literacy Program offers a wide variety of learning opportunities. Programs offered include traditional English language reading and writing tutoring, digital literacy workshops and classes, book clubs, English Conversation Club, opportunities to earn a GED, and regular workshops aimed at relevant literacy topics. In addition, the Literacy Program offers family services such as parenting classes, story times, and book giveaways.
